High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 2166: Chapter 387: Flashback

...

...

”What do you want me to do?”

Matthew stood in the resting room of the Karen Family at Alpha Fortress, looking at the tall and slender figure on the terrace, feeling a bit nervous.

”Inheritance, patience, maintenance.”

Sir Friedman raised the tulip cup in his hand towards the moon in the sky, the red liquid inside gently swaying in the night, giving off a sweet aroma that mixed with the Duke’s cold voice, making Matthew feel like he’d just taken a big bite of durian ice cream:

”You need to be the family’s anchor at the First University, using patience and grit to measure Sepulano’s magnanimity... letting everyone know, Karen is still a name that cannot be ignored by the Moon Council. Or at least, you should learn to observe.”

”Observe?”

”The movement stirred up by the Law Book Liberation Association and Northern District Wizards is a perfect case for observation.” The Duke licked the bloodstains at the corner of his mouth: ”Naive, yet full of passion, exploited by the malicious... it’s destined to, like burning peach blossoms, leave behind a pile of ashes amid intense passion.”

”This movement lasting so long was indeed beyond everyone’s expectations.” Matthew didn’t know his cousin’s stance, cautiously sharing his opinion.

”But most people still close their eyes, pretending not to see the drastic changes occurring.”

Sir Friedman finally turned around and looked at his cousin: ”Some students’ cries can’t wake those pretending to sleep. To truly cause a stir throughout the entire school is considered successful. The semester is ending soon. Exams, going home... There are too many things distracting everyone’s attention. Perhaps a well-timed ’sacrifice’ could change all of this.”

’Sacrifice’ is an offering to the divine spirits, naturally requiring no contribution from the Karen Family nor those lurking with ulterior motives—what’s left are only the Northern District Wizards.

”Is it necessary to go this far?”

Matthew faced his cousin’s gaze, trying to maintain a steady tone, although with subtle changes in his expression, he conveyed his confusion and dismay: ”Whether Northern District Wizards can attend school, or enter Jiuyou Academy, does it mean anything to us? Sepulano becoming... afterwards, our power has already been greatly restrained...”

He couldn’t voice the name ’Augustus.’

”That is the significance.”

The Duke turned back again to stare at the imperfect moon in the sky: ”We must show the Alpha people our value. If Northern District Wizards flood into Jiuyou Academy massively, it will fundamentally improve Alpha’s circumstances... then, our voice in this ancient castle will weigh more.”

”Why not collaborate directly with the North District Great Wise Person?”

The young vampire sought a more gentle approach: ”In the name of the Karen Family, that Great Sage surely can’t refuse cooperation with us.”

”Family is family, you and I are you and I.”

Sir Friedman took a sip from his cup: ”In the remaining days at school, not only must you learn advanced magic, but also how to expand your influence... The secret society I recommend you to join is a good start. Before this semester ends, you will replace me as a member of this secret society.”

”And what you need to do after becoming Lucifer, besides continuing to follow up on the ’frog’ movement is learning how to refine the Subordinate Philosopher’s Stone. Even bearing the ’subordinate’ label, the Philosopher’s Stone remains a Philosopher’s Stone. An abundant and stable supply of magic power enables it to replace most magic gems on the market, becoming the best foundation for Alchemy and Array Method.”

Standing on the terrace, Sir Friedman swirled the last shallow layer of red liquid in his tulip cup: ”With this gift, you can win over most alchemists in the Academy... After I leave school, continue to maintain the glory of the Karen Family.”

...

...

”...The method of making the Subordinate Philosopher’s Stone?”

The piercing voice of the black cat interrupted Lucifer’s thoughts. He looked up to see the black cat twitching its ears in disbelief: ”You dare to ask... That must be the greatest magic secret of the Northern District Wizards!”

”Supporting the Northern District Wizards’ ’Give Me a Frog’ movement, while secretly stabbing to obtain the greatest magic secret of the Northern District Wizards.” The witch with the cat mask interjected, sarcasm lacing her tone: ”I’m increasingly convinced you’re one of those conservative wizards in Alpha Fortress... Perhaps you are indeed Sir Friedman.”

Lucifer made no rebuttal; he silently took out a roll of parchment, tearing off the four-color ribbon on top, and unfolded the parchment.

”Regarding task completion and commission settlement,” he snapped his fingers to flick the parchment to the black cat: ”...Magic will make the final judgment.”

The parchment floated gently and steadily like a miniature magic carpet to the black cat, revealing the neatly written small letters detailing achievement levels linked to rewards, reward contents, task duration, completion analysis, and more.

The parchment’s end bore several deep-seated stamps.

The black cat nodded slightly, raising its paw to push the parchment to the closest cat-mask witch, indicating others should also take a look. At the same time, Lucifer’s somewhat indifferent voice resounded around:

”...This contract is notarized by Danghag Senior Notary Office, ensuring unquestionable binding effect. Task details and rewards are anonymous. Any member completing a certain amount of tasks can retrieve corresponding rewards at any notary institution of choice. Interested parties can leave their seal at the contract’s end, but...”

Looking at the black cat, he revealed slight sincerity: ”...This commissioning approach is an expedient measure, applicable when Lord Kannai cannot fully perform duties. If within this period, Lord Kannai commissions a third-party organization to complete my tasks, or those organizations propose other reward requests, I will adhere to the society’s tradition.”

The black cat nodded reservedly, and when the contract returned to it, it didn’t hesitate to press its paw, leaving its paw print.

Contracts or whatever, I’m not afraid!

After stamping his paw, it raised its head only to notice the bizarre looks around.

”Ahem.”

The witch with the cat mask lightly coughed, nonchalantly receiving the parchment, pausing intentionally in the black cat’s view, then removing her gemstone ring to gently tap the contract’s end.

A streak of light flashed proving effectiveness just the same.

”For similar contracts, everyone prefers using ’society identity’ for certification.” The witch subtly suggested to the black cat: ”Of course, this doesn’t mean we can detect anything through your paw print... But an additional layer of isolation provides more security.”
