High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 1968: Chapter 189: Morning Exercise Matters

Even during morning exercises, Xiao Xiao was still trying hard to explain to Zheng Qing that he used the word ’eat’ precisely because he discussed too much medieval magic history with Sima last night and got used to the language of wizards from that era.

Zheng Qing brushed it off while absentmindedly practicing his unarmed combat.

Compared to those trivial matters with Doctor Xiao, he had much bigger troubles to worry about—the upcoming Moon Hunting, the training and participation of the Atonement Hunting Team which were very time-consuming; after entering sophomore year, academics grew increasingly heavy, weekly assignments were driving him crazy; besides these, there were the two Mouse People in the off-campus shop, the growing Poseidon, Jiang Yu, Su Shijun, the shadow, the slowly recovering Law book, the sapling in his mind, and the Little Green Snake perched on the sapling.

Even more frustrating, Zheng Qing had a vague feeling he’d recently stirred up another significant trouble, but for the moment couldn’t recall it, akin to having a sneeze lingering at the tip of his nose, causing him increasing irritation and anxiety.

”Maybe you need a mirror.” After listening to Zheng Qing’s troubles, Xiao Xiao offered this suggestion.

The suggestion stems from a type of ancient witchcraft learned in their Tuesday Divination Class ’extracurricular expansion’ section—choose a small round mirror, place a bay leaf at each foot of the bed before sleeping, chant a spell, and then during the dream, you’ll see the mirror showing upcoming events.

Of course, this kind of magic has side effects; it causes the wizard to experience frequent ’deja vu’ after waking up, feeling as if they’ve seen the current scene before.

But this side effect is not the main reason Zheng Qing rejected this kind of magic.

”I wouldn’t dare use this witchcraft in the dormitory.” The young cost student muttered: ”Considering Tuan Tuan’s nasty character, he’d definitely secretly break my mirror... If I remember correctly, this magic is connected to our destiny; with the mirror broken, it would bring bad luck.”

”We can never achieve both this and that.” The short Warlock appeared a bit melancholic.

Zheng Qing glanced at him, while guessing whether Doctor Xiao encountered the ’both this and that’ dilemma during last night’s ’History of Magic study’, habitually rebutted: ”...But in reality, we do indeed need to handle many issues simultaneously.”

Upon saying this, he himself was taken aback, thinking of his own troubles, his mood suddenly sank again, and he forgot the witty remark he planned to make to the short Warlock.

In the distance, at the edge of the exercise field, Xin Fat Man appeared, waving his arms, inviting the two companions for breakfast.

Today’s breakfast was particularly hearty, with roasted bread sandwiches filled with fried eggs and bacon, the drink being orange juice, very suited for quickly replenishing energy post-exercise.

While Zheng Qing picked out the fried eggs from the bread to eat separately, Xiao Xiao next to him finally continued the previous topic: ”...In this regard, you should learn from the Northern District tricksters, who can juggle five knives in the air and still hold two knives in their hands... None of them will fall to the ground... Handling many things at once is not easy, and they not only handle it well, but can deal with five... seven potentially dangerous situations like catching flying knives with bare hands.”

”Not necessarily knives, sometimes they throw fireballs.”

Xin Fat Man didn’t quite understand what aspect of ’this point’ the Doctor was referring to, but it didn’t stop him from interjecting: ”Besides, there are no more tricksters now... They all claim to be ’Northern District Wizards’.”

”That’s not the point.” Zheng Qing dissatisfiedly glanced at the Fat Wizard, quickly swallowed the egg in his mouth, looked at the Doctor, and stressed: ”...The point is, every knife the Northern District Wizards juggle is independent, but many troubles we encounter are interconnected. And is knife juggling dangerous? A Golden Body Symbol, you want to catch a knife, you catch a knife; want to catch a fireball, you catch a fireball; even if you want to stick your hand in the mouth of a Changbai Mountain Chi qiu to pull out some dragon teeth, it’s no problem.”

”Trickster!”

”Alright, alright, trickster, shouldn’t involve magic... But the famous trickster Gary Baldy once said, ’When you’re afraid because you threw out five fireballs, the clever trickster focuses on one of the fireballs’... namely, the one you are about to catch.”

”You mean focusing on the main contradiction?” Zheng Qing nodded thoughtfully, naturally linking it to the philosophical theory he studied for over a decade.

”It’s almost that meaning.” Xiao Xiao barely nodded.

”Who is Gary Baldy?” Xin Fat Man was very interested in the unfamiliar name the Doctor just mentioned: ”Are there ’famous’ tricksters?”

”We should maintain enough reverence for any unknown outside our fields of expertise.” The short Warlock adjusted his glasses, glanced at the two companions: ”As for Gary Baldy, he’s the protagonist of a book I recently read, born in the Northern District, but due to some special reasons received Alliance permission to wander outside Buji Island... I just think his greatest achievement isn’t juggling five fireballs at once and earning thousands of pounds in gold, but having four wives and thirteen children, and none of them knows about the others.”

”Wow! That’s way more dangerous than throwing fireballs!” The Fat Wizard exclaimed, eyes gleaming.

Zheng Qing felt his ears perk up instantly.

”What’s the name of the book?” The young cost student feigned indifference, casually criticizing: ”I’m curious that such a lousy scumbag even had someone write a biography for him!”

As soon as he said this, he knew he was in trouble.

Sure enough, Xin Fat Man immediately mocked: ”Indeed, like repels like... If Gary Baldy is a ’lousy scumbag’, then what are you, a noble Mr. Zha?”

Xiao Xiao almost spoke at the same time: ”Surprised? I think you’re far more impressive than Gary Baldy... They should all know about the others, right?”

Zheng Qing drowned out the verbal assault of his two companions with a big belch.

”Today is Sunday, right,” he skillfully shifted the topic: ”I wonder if Old Yao will reveal his true form to conduct a class meeting... By the way, you know about the Hunting Committee’s registration notification, right? This time, all participating teams in the school hunting competition need to uniformly re-register, including the school hunting team and four academy teams.”

”What’s the point of this again!” Xin Fat Man indeed got distracted by the new topic: ”Hasn’t the school hunting team always been able to directly participate in the final Academy Cup competition?”

”It’s probably for fairness.” The young cost student was very satisfied with his ability to control the topic, and thus very patiently explained: ”Apparently this time the students’ union and Hunting Committee prepared a brand new hunting team selection plan... The sole requirement is fairness!”
