High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 1962: Chapter 183: Invitation

On the other side, when the black cat arrived at the old oak tree where the two mice had disappeared, the Ears Brothers were nowhere in sight, leaving only their scent behind. The black cat could only see a dark hole the size of a bowl on the trunk.

Zheng Qing knew that it was a tree hole created by the Mouse Clan using their talent, which could be used to go wherever they wanted.

Of course, using this kind of talent comes with many restrictions, such as communication distance, specific tree species, old trees with adequate magic power, or preset magic marks, etc.

But undeniably, this is a very sophisticated translocation technique that falls between high-tier space magic and mid-tier escape techniques, much more ingenious than Zheng Qing’s Armor Horse Charm.

The black cat squatted at the entrance, staring at the bowl-sized tree hole, lost in thought.

”Want to go in?” a curious voice asked from behind.

”A little,” the black cat nodded subconsciously. ”At this time, those two should be in the shop checking accounts with Fox Five. I wonder why they sneaked into the school... Could the Rat Immortal be hiding at the school?”

As soon as the words came out, the black cat felt a chill and the hair on its neck raised, arching its body and curling its tail, quickly turning to look behind, issuing a threatening cat call from its throat.

In contrast, the voice behind was evidently startled: ”Holy crap... it really is a cat!”

The speaker was a wizard wearing a strange white mask and a black robe. The black cat noticed that the mask lacked facial features like eyes, nose, and mouth, resembling a shelled egg, gleaming white under the moonlight.

Of course, this wasn’t the focus.

The focus was, clearly, the cat was the one who was startled, so why did the masked guy seem more scared?

The black cat thought indignantly, its form suddenly bloating multiple times to the size of a black panther, simultaneously opening its mouth to reveal rows of sharp white teeth.

”You’re definitely not a cat... no normal cat can change size at will and talk.”

The wizard with the white mask cautiously took a step back, his breath a bit tense, then scratched his head, a trace of distress in his voice: ”Would they laugh if I brought a cat along? According to Mendel’s Law, a wizard using transformation magic shouldn’t be able to talk... unless it’s a mad wizard or it’s always a cat?”

Mendel’s Law refers to the fact that when a wizard uses transformation magic, it’s impossible to simultaneously achieve species-free transformation, maintain independent will, and stable magic power.

Take the black cat for example. If it were a wizard using transformation magic, firstly, its ability to grow and shrink and to talk means it has stable magic power. So of the remaining two conditions, it can only choose one. Choosing species-free transformation means the black cat cannot maintain independent will and will have two split consciousnesses before and after transformation. Choosing independent will means the black cat will always remain a cat.

Realizing this, the aura of the wizard with the white mask became even more forlorn.

The black cat paid no mind to the wizard’s reaction.

It perked its ears, warily catching the surrounding movements, and after confirming no other disturbances, hoarsely questioned, ”Did you use magic on me?”

”Frankly speaking, a technique for favorable communication,” the voice under the white mask had a slightly slick tone, very infuriating to hear: ”...helps us open up in awkward silence. After all, anyone can choose to stop talking, but few actively shut off the desire to speak in their minds.”

Saying this, he took another two steps back, simultaneously spreading his hands to indicate he didn’t have a law book or talisman—had no ill intentions.

This gesture wasn’t very persuasive.

The black cat watched him, moments later it quietly asked, ”Who are you?”

”Just a good person.”

”There’s no such thing as a good person who hides their face,” the black cat asserted confidently, twitching its ears, ready to release the little green snake kept in its ears at a moment’s notice if things went awry.

In its mind, the little snake coiled around the Tree of Order lazily flicked its tail tip, indicating it understood. This reassured the black cat significantly.

”Oh, calm down, calm down,” the wizard with the white mask sharply sensed the dangerous aura filling the air, retreated another step, raising his hands higher: ”I just came to find someone... wearing a mask is a work necessity, not necessarily a villain, maybe I’m just too handsome and am avoiding causing a stir, being a very considerate person.”

The black cat gave him a long, deep look.

Someone who could say something so shameless didn’t seem like an ordinary villain. Moreover, this was deep within the academy, in the area most tightly monitored by the School Guardian Array.

So it let out a soft breath, its form shrinking back to normal cat size.

”Ah, can you freely change size?” the wizard with the white mask sat cross-legged on the ground, letting his sight level with the black cat as he nodded: ”What other abilities do you have?”

The black cat ignored him, instead turning around, giving a light call towards the treetops not far away: ”Meow!”

After a moment of silence, several lush treetops swayed suddenly, and in no time, dozens of cats of various sizes leapt from the canopies, racing towards the direction of the Cat Fruit Tree.

These were the cats that hurried upon realizing the leader was showing off.

The wizard with the white mask looked a bit surprised and somewhat understanding, nodding: ”...Hmm, the second ability is cat group control?”

The black cat, with a serious expression, squatted in front of him, scrutinizing for a moment, and contemplating his previous words, suddenly asked, ”What do you want to take me to do?”

”To join a study interest group,” the wizard with the white mask answered politely, throwing out a word most appealing to Jiuyou students.

”Interest group?” the black cat ignored the word ’study,’ furrowing its brows: ”Is it a club? On campus or off campus? Is it illegal? Sorry, not interested.”

In its view, a sneaky guy like this surely wasn’t headed anywhere decent.

The wizard with the white mask spread his hands, sounding a bit helpless: ”Do you have some prejudice against masks... we wear them because the club requires it. By the way, the school allows free association. So there’s no legal or illegal distinction.”

The black cat squatted still, unimpressed, its tail sweeping behind, expression turning slightly impatient: ”I said I’m not interested, I have my own group... stay away from me... and this tree hole!”

Before the two mice returned, it couldn’t risk letting this unknown identity person approach the hole.

”The school allows students to participate in different types of clubs simultaneously,” the wizard with the white mask also remained seated patiently, counseling, ”... maybe you could come with me and see, you might become interested.”
