High School of Demon Hunting

Chapter 136: Chapter 60 Campus under the Night Sky_1

”The First University campus, shrouded in the twilight, appeared particularly tranquil and serene.

On both sides of the tree-lined road, the wide leaves of the fallen cassia trees blocked the chilly moonlight, casting dappled shadows on the stone-paved path. The low hum of the gourd combined with the clear ringing of bells from the nearby bushes created a harmonious duet.

A small, white kitten, following the rhythm of the symphony, frolicked and danced joyously in the dim world.

The kitten, at only two or three months old, was at a curious age where its fuzzy fur had not yet completely shed and its cries still carried a hint of milk.

Now, the kitten was fascinated by a butterfly.

A black butterfly.

The butterfly flitted leisurely in mid-air. It appeared lifeless, as lifeless as a scrap of paper, and like a piece of the night sky that was torn off. Its tranquility was a mesmerizing scene.

The kitten too seemed fascinated by this special insect.

From its perspective, a butterfly that flew neither high nor fast was the perfect toy. Normally, it could chase after it, pouncing half-heartedly and never tiring of the amusement.

At this moment, in its round, rolling eyes, only the butterfly existed, and nothing else mattered.

The black butterfly lazily bobbed through the night, swaying in the wind just before the kitten’s fluffy paw landed, dodging this playful hunter.

This seemed like a form of tease.

The kitten’s cries became increasingly urgent, and the frequency of its pounces increased.

Until a ’sloshing’ washing sound broke the kitten’s playtime.

It carefully halted, one paw still raised in mid-air, its light green eyes narrowed, and its triangular ears spun flexibly, searching for any suspicious sounds around it.

The flow of the water, the rustle of fallen leaves, and the distant quarrels between the bells and gourds; everything seemed as usual.

There was a damp feel in the air; several buzzing insects accidentally flew into the kitten’s nostrils.

’Sneeze!’ ’Sneeze!’

The kitten immediately forgot the suspicious sounds just now, sneezed forcefully to drive away these annoying intruders.

Once it felt comfortable again, it remembered the black butterfly.

Looking up, the moonlight was like water, and the lake was coated in silver. The black butterfly was fluttering over a white artificial hill not far away. It looked like a splash of thick ink on a piece of white paper, exceptionally conspicuous in this bright world.

It immediately hopped onto the artificial hill and pounced towards the butterfly.

This time, it got what it wanted.

The black butterfly was squashed under its paw, just like a withered leaf.

It purred happily, raising its paw cautiously.

The butterfly disappeared.

On the white stone, only a black mark remained.

A breeze blew by, and the black mark turned into a wisp of floating ash, disappearing into the vast sky above Lin Zhong Lake.

Oh!

The kitten tilted its head, its eyes full of curiosity.

Ordinary butterflies weren’t like this.

Usually, they were all edible!

It raised its paw, licked the remaining ash off its pad, then immediately spat it out, making a ’ptui ptui’ sound.

”What a naughty little thing.” A muffled voice rang out above the kitten’s head, as if the speaker’s mouth was covered with layers of thick paper, making the voice buzz slightly.

A hand as white as jade reached out and stroked the tiny cat’s fur from its white stone perch, down the neck.

White night, white hand, stroking a white kitten.

Everything seemed so pristine.

The kitten meowed, lowered its body tamely, and a joyful purring sound emitted from its chest.

”What will you do since you’ve smashed my butterfly?” The voice which was buzzing like a bee sounded troubled, ”You’ve just ruined today’s news.”

The kitten comfortably rolled over and turned its face, and the mysterious creature reflected in its pure eyes.

”Ugh! This just made things worse.” The buzzing voice sounded frustrated, ”You saw me too now, so it’s not my fault.”

The white hand gently moved, kneading the kitten’s delicate spine through its smooth fur.

The wild kitten blinked its pale green eyes, meowing innocuously.

”Even cuteness is a sin!”

The buzzing voice drifted away softly, disappearing into the soft night breeze.

The white kitten calmly lay in place, its pale green eyes fixed, staring at the still surface of the lake, as if waiting for a fish to jump out.

Not moving an inch.

Time passed, and the night remained the same.

Minutes later, accompanied by the sound of deflating balloons, a group of figures under black cloaks appeared by the Lakeside of Bell Lake.

”It’s this area.” A strict voice broke the quiet night: ”The Guardian Array detected a life passing away. Everybody get ready! Start searching immediately!”

”No need to search, I already see it.” A thin figure strode towards the white rockery.

Upon the rockery stone, a small kitten lay quietly.

”Hilda, start extracting air residual information immediately!” The thin figure eyed the white kitten in front of him, quickly giving commands.

”Alright, Professor Yi.” A lazy voice took out a small piece of bamboo, removed the wooden plug from the top, and released a swarm of white creatures that resembled fireflies.

”So these are your newly cultivated mutated fireflies?” A curious voice asked quietly: ”From their size, they look a lot smaller than regular fireflies.”

”But in terms of ability, they are more than twice as powerful as regular fireflies.” Hilda proudly wiggled her finger, a white firefly obediently landed on her fingertip: ”See, their antennae are much finer, and their cells are thinner, making them more sensitive to their environment... I’ve improved the fireflies’ feeding system and color-changing mechanism, so they can emit different colors by absorbing demon energy from the air... In fact, they are publishing my paper on mutated fireflies in the next issue of ’Magical Creatures’!”

”That’s a top journal with an impact factor of 4.1.” The curious voice was full of envy.

”Shut up!” The first strict voice spoke again: ”Hilda, if you don’t want to be sent back to the lab for ten years, act more mature!”

”Yes, yes! My Professor Montreya.” Hilda lazily raised her hand, made faces at her companion.

”Victor, go down to the lake and ask those fish people, see if they have any clues.” Professor Yi, who was carefully observing the white kitten, started talking again: ”By the way, bring their patrol log for this week and the environmental report of Bell Lake.”

”What if they resist?” Victor took off his robe, revealing a shining armor.

”You’re allowed to use reasonable force.” Professor Yi responded without hesitation.

”Understood.” Victor casually tore through the space in front of him and stepped in.
