Chapter 1399: Chapter 1400: Entering the Mountain

Actually, An Jing hadn’t expected to use the camouflage uniforms so soon. When she initially ordered them to be made, it was only out of a mindset to be prepared for anything.

Once she saw everyone had disguised themselves, she turned to Xiao Changyi and said, ”The sky hasn’t lightened yet. We need to take this opportunity to quickly leave the city and head into the mountains.”

If they waited until daylight to enter the mountains, she was worried the enemy troops might discover them. After all, the mountains were connected to Jingye City, and the defenses around Jingye City were currently very tight.

”Be careful.” Right now, apart from those three words, Xiao Changyi really didn’t know what else to say.

”Mm.”

An Jing responded briefly, then, together with Ye Zhi, led ten female soldiers to quietly leave Xilin City.

As Tobanya passed Meng Zhuqing, she whispered, ”Don’t worry.”

Although Meng Zhuqing nodded and replied softly, inwardly she was extremely worried. The dense and old forest in the mountains was truly dangerous.

Once An Jing and her group quietly left Xilin City, they carefully made their way to the edge of the mountains before dawn broke. They only ventured a little way into the mountains without going too deep, and there they sat down to eat their dry rations while waiting for daylight.

After finishing a cake, An Jing took off the binoculars hanging around her neck, split them apart, and handed one eyepiece to Ye Zhi while keeping the other for herself.

At the same time, she said to Ye Zhi, ”We’ll split into two teams now. You’ll take one team heading northeast, while I’ll take another heading southeast. This way the task will be completed faster.”

Ye Zhi had already been thinking the same, so when An Jing suggested it, she had no objections. She accepted the eyepiece while replying, ”Alright.”

”Shi Shi, A Ya, Wuyu, Baoqin, Feifei will be in my team. The rest will join your team.” An Jing divided the groups.

Ye Zhi was about to agree, but before she could say anything, Shi Shi spoke up: ”General, can I join the Deputy General’s team?”

An Jing was taken aback. Usually, no one had objections to group assignments, so why was Shi Shi unhappy this time?

Puzzled, An Jing asked, ”What’s wrong? You don’t want to be in my group?”

Shi Shi smiled awkwardly and said, ”It’s not that. I just feel more pressure when following you, General. I think I’d feel more comfortable with the Deputy General’s team.”

An Jing didn’t press the matter further and instead asked the soldiers assigned to Ye Zhi’s group, ”Who’s willing to switch with Shi Shi?”

Tobanya said, ”I’ll switch. That way the strength on both sides is more balanced.”

The others quickly agreed, ”Yes, exactly.”

”Alright then.” An Jing had Tobanya switch with Shi Shi, placing Shi Shi in Ye Zhi’s group and Tobanya in hers.

At dawn, Ye Zhi’s team headed northeast into the mountains, while An Jing’s team went southeast.

In the mountains, which hadn’t been traversed by humans before, there were no paths. As they walked, the group used swords and knives to cut away obstacles in front of them so they could progress.

The forest was teeming with snakes, insects, rats, and ants—some of them terrifying. Between certain trees, massive spider webs spanned the gaps, with spiders perched on them. Most of the spiders were venomous, so the women did their best to avoid contact with these poisonous creatures to ensure their safety as they moved forward.

While trekking through the dense forest, the exposed skin of the group’s members was scratched to varying degrees.

Some even had their clothes torn.

The trees were towering and dense, preventing An Jing from seeing anything beyond the forest.

It seemed the only choice was to climb a tree and use the binoculars for a better view.

With this thought, An Jing instructed the female soldiers in her team to halt. She placed her belongings on the ground, then climbed a tree to see if it was possible to observe the situation in Jingye City from up here.
