Chapter 1396: Chapter 1397: Caution is the Parent of Safety

An Jing and Xiao Changyi did not know that Linghe had been hoping for their death all along. As soon as they entered Xilin City, they heard the city’s defending General Luo Fengsheng reporting on the situation within Xilin City.

Everything in Xilin City seemed normal.

It is likely that the Emperor of Chilin had already learned that the Xiyun Kingdom was planning to attack Chilin. At the border between Chilin and Xiyun, there were increasingly more Chilin soldiers patrolling, and their patrols were becoming more frequent.

Upon understanding the situation within Xilin City, Xiao Changyi gathered with the generals to discuss strategies for attacking Chilin using a map of Chilin.

Detailed maps of each country are highly classified. The Xiyun Kingdom possesses its own detailed maps, but the map of Chilin held by Xiao Changyi and the others was far from comprehensive.

The map only displayed some of Chilin’s main cities, which imposed significant constraints on their planning. A single misstep could lead to the annihilation of the army, so Xiao Changyi and the others couldn’t afford to launch a reckless attack.

They would need to send people to survey the terrain.

The city closest to Chilin in Xiyun Kingdom is called Xilin City, and the city closest to Xiyun Kingdom in Chilin is called Jingye City.

Xiao Changyi did not immediately decide who would survey the terrain. Instead, he walked up to the Xilin City tower with An Jing and Ye Zhi to observe the distant Jingye City using binoculars.

Thanks to the binoculars, they could see what was previously invisible to the naked eye. Through the lenses, Xiao Changyi observed that the gates of Jingye City were tightly closed, and the city wall was lined with many soldiers.

It was clear that the defenses were extremely strict.

This indicated that the Emperor of Chilin was already aware of Xiyun’s plan to attack Chilin and had reinforced the defenses at Jingye City in preparation for Xiyun’s assault.

However, due to the obstruction of Jingye City’s tall walls, Xiao Changyi couldn’t see what was happening inside the walls.

An Jing and Ye Zhi also looked through the binoculars and had a sense of the situation.

The soldiers guarding the tower watched as Xiao Changyi, An Jing, and Ye Zhi each used two black cylindrical objects against their eyes. Unaware that they were binoculars, the soldiers didn’t understand what Xiao Changyi and the others were doing, and found the trio’s behavior rather peculiar.

An Jing paid no mind to what others thought of their odd behavior. She took the binoculars from Ye Zhi’s hands and carefully examined Jingye City across from them as well as its surrounding areas.

As she looked, she remarked, ”It’s not realistic to attack Chilin from other countries; we’re left with only one path through Jingye City.”

Besides Xiyun, Chilin is bordered by other countries. But how could those countries permit Xiyun to march so many soldiers into their territories? Should Xiyun shift its target and attack them instead, it would be disastrous. Thus, taking a detour through another country to attack Chilin was simply not an option.

Ye Zhi said, ”Then let’s take Jingye City first.”

An Jing laughed instantly. ”You make it sound so easy. We don’t know the situation inside the city, nor do we understand their terrain. Rushing into an attack could result in heavy losses for us.”

Just after finishing, An Jing’s eyes lit up. ”I’ve got it! Husband, Ye Zi, look here!”

An Jing set down the binoculars and pointed to the large mountain adjacent to Jingye City, motioning for Xiao Changyi and Ye Zhi to take a look.

Following the direction of An Jing’s finger, Ye Zhi quickly understood her meaning. Back in the modern era, they had ventured into deep forests and mountains more times than they could count.

Xiao Changyi, however, was puzzled. He asked, ”Jing Er, is there something strange about that mountain?”

An Jing replied, ”It’s not the mountain that’s strange. It’s... Let’s discuss this back inside.”

Discussing it here was too risky.

There was even the possibility that the enemy might have spies among the soldiers on this watchtower.

After all, caution can prevent disaster.

”Alright,” Xiao Changyi and Ye Zhi agreed to return.
