Peaceful Farm Life

Chapter 1389: Chapter 1390: He Always Only Cares About the Life and Death of Those He Cares About

Feeling increasingly lonely...

Just as Ye Zhi was about to be swallowed by this boundless loneliness, One Person slipped into her tent.

”Zhizhi!”

Simply being called ”Zhizhi,” Ye Zhi instantly snapped out of her loneliness.

It was Gong Juechen.

Yes, it was Gong Juechen who had come. Not only had he come, but he had also brought a basin of warm water.

While placing the warm water beside the bed, Gong Juechen complained tenderly, ”Zhizhi, didn’t I give you that ointment for frostbite? So why are your hands still in this condition? If your hands look like this, I guess your feet must be even worse. Come, come, soak your feet quickly. After that, I’ll apply the medicine for you.”

So, it turned out that someone did notice her hands full of frostbite.

However, that person was the one who made her feel the most unsafe.

”There’s no need.” Ye Zhi didn’t want to get up; she just wanted to lie there quietly for a while.

”How can there be no need? Look at your hands—if you don’t treat them, they’ll start to fester!” Gong Juechen pulled her up without leaving any room for discussion.

For the first time, Ye Zhi felt Gong Juechen’s forcefulness and was momentarily dazed.

When she finally regained her senses, she was already sitting on the edge of the bed, pulled up by Gong Juechen.

Gong Juechen first helped her wipe her hands, then, without a trace of disgust, took off her socks and placed her feet into the basin of warm water.

”I really don’t understand how you got yourself into this state,” Gong Juechen said, both distressed and reproachful.

After all, he had given her frostbite ointment, so logically, her condition shouldn’t be this severe.

While Ye Zhi soaked her feet, he sat beside her, grabbed one of her hands, and stretched out his other hand toward her, asking for something: ”Where’s the frostbite ointment? Give it to me; I’ll apply it to your hands. Look at your hands—they’re in such bad shape that they now look less appetizing than boiled pig’s trotters.”

Ye Zhi automatically ignored the latter part of Gong Juechen’s words and replied flatly, ”I don’t have it.”

”You don’t have it?” Gong Juechen was momentarily unable to react. How could she not have it? Clearly, he had given it to her. And it wasn’t some ordinary frostbite ointment—it was something he had specifically formulated.

”The female soldiers were worse off than me, so I gave it to them.”

Gong Juechen immediately got angry: ”That was meant for you—how could you give it to them?!”

”Once you gave it to me, it became mine,” Ye Zhi replied flatly, meaning that her belongings were hers to decide what to do with.

Gong Juechen quickly retorted, ”If that’s the case, when I gave myself to you, why didn’t you say I was yours?”

Ye Zhi replied, ”You? I don’t want you.” She genuinely felt he was unreliable and couldn’t provide the kind of security she desired.

Gong Juechen was left speechless in frustration.

After taking a deep breath and suppressing his anger, Gong Juechen retrieved a porcelain bottle from his pocket, opened it, and asked in a carefully moderated tone, ”You gave it away, fine. But then why didn’t you come to me for more? Allowing yourself to end up like this—are you deliberately trying to torment me? You know perfectly well that seeing you like this makes me feel awful.”

Ye Zhi’s lips trembled slightly. After a long pause, she said flatly, ”The female soldiers said you didn’t have any frostbite ointment left, so I didn’t bother asking you for more.”

”Of course I didn’t have any for them. They’re not anyone important to me, so why would I give them the ointment I specifically made for you?” Gong Juechen said without the slightest sense of guilt. He had always cared only about the people he cherished.

”...You’re a little selfish.”

”I’ve always been like this,” Gong Juechen said dismissively, while carefully applying frostbite ointment to Ye Zhi’s hands.
