Peaceful Farm Life

Chapter 1394: Chapter 1395: Attacking a Rock with an Egg?

Tong Nongzhi thought for a moment, then lowered his voice to speak to Guo Nongzhi: ”Why don’t we defect to the Chilin Kingdom? We can reveal what we know about Xilin City to Chilin, and they should take us in.”

”This...” Guo Nongzhi hesitated. Once they defected to Chilin, it would be an act of treason, and if the Xiyun people saw them, they’d all want them dead.

”I don’t want to do this either, but,” Tong Nongzhi looked helpless, ”this is better than losing our lives.”

Guo Nongzhi knew that An Jing and Xiao Changyi would never forgive them for what they’d done in the past, and since he valued his own life dearly, he finally made up his mind after hearing Tong Nongzhi say it was better than dying: ”Alright, let’s defect to Chilin.”

And so, the two began planning how to defect to Chilin.

Meanwhile, Xiao Changyi and An Jing remained completely unaware of the matter.

...

The other countries, upon learning that Xiyun planned to attack Chilin, were surprised. The Chilin Kingdom had always had a strong military and loved warfare; typically, Chilin was the one to attack other nations, and no country had ever dared to launch an offensive against Chilin. To initiate an attack on Chilin was undoubtedly a suicidal move, so their surprise was palpable.

Furthermore, all countries had signed peace treaties with one another. Was Xiyun now planning to disregard its reputation before the world?

But when they heard it was because Chilin had assassinated Su Haoyu, their surprise waned, and many even secretly approved of Xiyun’s decision to go to war with Chilin.

This was a national humiliation, and if the shame wasn’t avenged, Xiyun would be mocked for its weakness and incompetence.

Even if they could not fully wipe away the disgrace, they had to show some form of response.

However, after learning that Xiao Changyi would lead the army to attack Chilin, the various nations believed that while Xiyun might not be able to completely obliterate Chilin, they could at least severely weaken them.

They had witnessed the devastating prowess of Xiao Changyi firsthand.

Xiyun was thriving now, and all the nations were wary of them. War would only delay Xiyun’s progress; as for Chilin, they had long been arrogant and domineering, earning disdain from these other nations. Yet none of them had the power to confront Chilin alone. Between these two warring nations, the most likely outcome was mutual destruction rather than the domination of one over the other.

A drawn-out battle between Xiyun and Chilin would be of immense benefit to the other nations.

Especially for those nations bordering both Xiyun and Chilin.

If it played out that way, they wouldn’t have to worry about either power for a very long time.

War typically left both parties heavily weakened, followed by years of resting and rebuilding.

Just imagining the consequences was enough for these nations to hope fervently that the conflict between Xiyun and Chilin would break out as soon as possible.

Upon hearing that Xiyun intended to attack him, the Emperor of Chilin immediately slapped Linghe hard across the face.

”I must have been out of my mind to let you persuade me to send someone to assassinate Su Haoyu!”

Had it not been for Linghe’s whispers into his ear, urging him to act, and his momentary lapse of judgment in agreeing, none of this would have happened.

Now, the entire Chilin Kingdom would undeniably see him as a monarch who acted recklessly, without deliberating the consequences or considering the welfare of his people—he had now caused a war between two nations.

At forty-something years old, the Emperor of Chilin was originally healthy and vigorous, but his years of indulgence in lust and entanglement with Linghe had left him pale-faced and emaciated. Anyone could tell without needing a physician that his health was deteriorating.

Even delivering one slap to Linghe left him feeling fatigued.

”Emperor,” despite the stinging redness of her face and the fiery pain, Linghe immediately approached the Emperor with flattering smiles, nestling close to him. ”Xiyun is far inferior to us, Chilin. Why worry so much? There’s no need to be this angry.”
