Chapter 1654: Chapter 1654: Did I not try my best?

The next day during the court morning assembly, Heng Yongsi, the Department of Household Officer, stepped forward and said, ”Your Majesty, the Capital’s official Fan Li has discovered the latest fire evidence. It is heard that it is the medicine bottle of the female Chief Doctor Bai, which is extremely strange. Why hasn’t Lord Fan summoned the female Chief Doctor Bai for questioning?”

This Heng Yongsi is not someone else, but the cousin of the Duke Zheng. He had previously relied on the Duke Zheng’s connections, and now with the sudden death of the Duke Zheng, he must protect the Grand Princess’s ship.

Listening to this, Fan Li stepped forward and said, ”The female Chief Doctor Bai is a renowned doctor who has prescribed countless medicines. How could a mere medicine bottle be used as evidence? According to what Lord Heng said, Duke Zheng was drinking wine from Zuixian Building before he died. Should we close down Zuixian Building first?”

”You...” Heng Yongsi’s face turned red with anger. Zuixian Building is a famous tavern in the capital, selling many fine wines, and he has shares in Zuixian Building.

”You’re making unreasonable arguments. The drinks had been checked and no problem was found. No one from Xianle Residence sought treatment from the female Chief Doctor Bai, so where did this medicine bottle come from?” Heng Yongsi said loudly.

Tang Yin impatiently rubbed his temples and said coldly, ”I value your service not to see you bicker in the court but to relieve me of my worries and difficulties. Ask yourselves what you have done?”

Fan Li lowered his head, but he knew in his heart that the emperor was speaking to Heng Yongsi. He had been working on the aftermath of the fire, and the emperor was very satisfied with his efforts, already hinting at commendation.

”All right, the court discusses national affairs. This case has been assigned to Fan Li and the Department of Justice for collaborative handling. Heng Yongsi, if you have any queries, discuss them with the Department of Justice. Do not waste everyone’s time here,” the emperor said impatiently.

Heng Yongsi hurriedly apologized and retreated. With such words from the emperor, how could he dare say more?

At this moment, Bai Ruozhu was busy at the disaster victim shelter, and many people’s conditions had improved. The lightly injured could go home directly, but they now had nowhere to return.

Suddenly, a commotion came from outside. Soon, the Grand Princess appeared with a group of departing patients, and the noise was from the crowd outside.

Because the Grand Princess had two sticks of thorns tied to her back!

Isn’t this the act of bearing thorns for atonement? However, she wasn’t bare-backed with thorny punishment. The clothes were so thick, and the thorns were cleanly handled, so how could she suffer any physical pain?

Given the Grand Princess’s pride, being able to grittily do such a shameful thing was indeed beyond Bai Ruozhu’s expectations.

As soon as the Grand Princess entered, she bowed deeply to everyone, then with a tearful expression and choked voice said, ”I know I was wrong. I wanted everyone to quickly forgive me, but I ended up causing more trouble. Here I apologize to everyone, to the female Chief Doctor Bai, hoping you can forgive me and that the female Chief Doctor Bai will not hold grudges so she could save these patients. They shouldn’t suffer because of my recklessness.”

Bai Ruozhu inwardly marveled at the Grand Princess’s emotional intelligence. Usually, she was so arrogant and despotic, probably because she disdained using her emotional intelligence.

”Bai, I know I was wrong. In the future, I’ll listen to you and won’t recklessly eat anymore,” someone spoke up voluntarily. The hooligan’s condition scared them, and many people’s bodies started itching. The wounds turned red and festered, making them all scared.

The hooligan was carried on a stretcher, already on his last breath. He barely raised his hand and weakly said, ”Save me...”

Bai Ruozhu took a look and was shocked. She knew the hooligan would have to be taught a lesson, but she hadn’t realized he was so severely allergic to seafood.

”It’s too late. His body is extensively burned, coupled with allergies leading to internal chaos, liver edema, already beyond medical help,” Bai Ruozhu sighed.

Everyone gasped in shock. Not listening to the doctor’s advice and eating some seafood could kill someone?

The Grand Princess had a trace of triumph in her eyes, but her posture remained humble, and she choked, saying, ”Bai, you’re not still angry with us, are you? We all know we’re wrong, saving lives is urgent, please save him.”

Though her emphasizing gained her many favored views, a princess lowering herself to plead for the people’s safety, it seemed she genuinely cared about these people’s well-being.

Most commoners are relatively simple-minded, quickly forgetting who caused the situation.

”If the Grand Princess doesn’t trust me, she can invite other doctors to take a look. I’m just a doctor, not an Immortal. If I could save him, why wouldn’t I? But I don’t have the power to bring the dead back to life,” Bai Ruozhu said.

For a moment, everyone was silent. People will die, and even the best doctor can’t save everyone.

”But... everyone says you’re a Divine Doctor!” the Grand Princess deliberately made an anxious expression but deliberately let the listeners question Bai Ruozhu.

”I am not yet twenty years old. I can only say my medical skills are decent, but I’m far from being a Divine Doctor. I’m sorry to disappoint the Grand Princess,” Bai Ruozhu bowed and turned to prepare medicine.

The hooligan, knowing he was beyond saving, began to cry. Due to a lack of strength, his voice was as small as a cat’s meow, yet his sobs still pierced into the crowd’s ears, like a curse tormenting everyone’s nerves.

Some sighed deeply, while others quietly wiped their tears.

At this point, the hooligan suddenly stopped crying and began twitching strangely. Bai Ruozhu hurried forward to administer needles, but soon his breathing weakened, and finally, he closed his eyes...

”How... how did you let him die?” the Grand Princess cried out, even appearing to be upset for the hooligan, ”Perhaps if you’d tried harder, he could have survived.”

Bai Ruozhu gave her a big eye-roll, ”I’ve tried my best. Grand Princess, don’t say that to me. Without your dishes, he wouldn’t have died.”

”I’ve already atoned by bearing thorns. Why can’t you forgive and forget? Just because I took him, you didn’t do your best to save him? If it’s like this, I’d rather you hit me, as long as you could bring back his life,” the Grand Princess said and still cried.

”Grand Princess, why do you always twist facts and target me? The man was on the verge of death when you brought him over, yet I didn’t save him? Let me say again, I am a doctor, not an Immortal. Not every illness can be treated, and not every person can be saved. From having no issue, you created one, then blamed the doctor for not trying?”

Bai Ruozhu was truly angry this time, ”You set a fire that burned down a block of houses, and once I got the news, I came to save people, provided manpower and medicine. Did I not try my best? You offered them inedible dishes, did I not advise and stop you? Ask those present at the time, did I not try my best? Even when I knew he was beyond saving, I still tried to rescue, did I not try my best? How come in your words, even my efforts to save people were wrong?”
