Bride of Retribution: Aloof Billionaire's Dominant Game

”No, I’m just in a bad mood. Maybe I should listen to you and not go to work. I should go stay at your house instead,” Avery Jane said softly, her voice slightly choked. She must have been to the Hughes Family’s old residence before; she had this strong premonition. Now she’s trying to find traces of her past life there, bit by bit.

Joshua Hughes felt his heart sink a little. Something must be wrong. Avery Jane isn’t the type to skip work just because she’s in a bad mood. She has always loved working, and they even argued about it for a long time. The only explanation could be that she now harbored thoughts more important than going to work. The streetlights cast their shadows long, slowly blending them together...

Joshua Hughes sat up from the bed. She was asleep, her eyebrows unconsciously furrowed even in her dreams. What could be troubling her so much that she felt unhappy even in her sleep?

After returning home that night, no matter how gently he tried to tease her, her mood wasn’t very high. Even during the intimate moments, she seemed a bit distracted. Thinking that she wasn’t in a good mood, he suppressed his own desire, lying with her until she slowly fell asleep before getting up. Something must have happened, something quite serious.

The phone rang in the middle of the night, especially grating on the nerves. Emma White cursed harshly. Who would disturb someone’s sleep at this hour? She never turned off her phone, but having someone call at such an ungodly hour was driving her insane. She screamed inwardly, her beauty sleep...

Upon seeing the number, Emma White immediately snapped awake from her drowsy state. It was from Joshua Hughes! My God, it really was him. What should she do? Should she answer? Or not? Had something been exposed today? What did Avery Jane do at the mall today? She was so secretive. Was she sneaking around on Joshua Hughes? That seems unlikely. Joshua Hughes is so handsome, and from what she heard, he’s quite capable in that regard. Rich too. Where would she find a man better than him?

The phone rang persistently, forcing Emma White to pick it up, faking a sleepy, muddled voice: ”Who is it? In the middle of the night, can’t a person get some sleep...” She admired herself for being able to act so well.

:”Emma White, you’ve got a lot of nerve, leaving Avery Jane by herself in the mall. Do you think I have such a good temper? I’ve already let the trip to Sydney slide, and now you think you can be even more brazen?” The man’s voice on the other end was cold and cutting, sending a shiver down her spine despite the distance. It was chilling even through the phone.

:”No, I didn’t. Today, Avery Jane said I just needed to accompany her to the mall entrance. I didn’t leave her behind, really, President Hughes,” Emma White felt like she was about to wet herself in fear. Having the woman of the company’s highest leader as her colleague and friend, she gained nothing and lived in constant fear. It was foolish.

Listening to the frightened voice on the other end, Joshua Hughes’s gaze grew darker. He was right; she didn’t go to the mall today. He should have noticed from her odd behavior at noon.

Avery Jane now had her own secrets. This thought emerged from the depths of his heart, cold sweat beginning to break out on his forehead. Perhaps it was a secret, but not really—whose past would become a secret? Had she remembered something? That day, she muttered ”Wenyard” in her sleep, worrying him for a long time, but when she woke up, she seemed fine. What exactly was she hiding in her heart?

Joshua Hughes hung up the phone, standing by the window. The moonlight, like white gauze, spilled through the large window onto him, outlining the silhouette of an exceptionally tall man, with a faint melancholy, like a moon without stars to accompany it tonight...

Emma White, holding the phone, sat dazed on the bed for a long time before she came to her senses.

President Hughes didn’t actually know what Avery Jane was doing today. She was tricked. Joshua Hughes was only testing her, but she admitted it immediately in that tone. Would she endanger Avery Jane? She couldn’t call Avery Jane now to say her actions had been exposed. Faced with the solitary moon in the sky, she let out a mournful howl. ”Avery Jane, I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to betray you. We shouldn’t have thought we could deceive President Hughes. His intelligence level isn’t on the same level as ours. How could we possibly deceive him?” Emma White wanted to cry but had no tears, biting the bedsheet in frustration...
