Bride of Retribution: Aloof Billionaire's Dominant Game

”Go on...” The voice was deep, so deep it felt suffocating.

”At that time, I was waiting outside the operating room for news. The master overseas wanted me to update him continually about Lucas Yates’ surgery. That’s when Mrs. Hughes came to find me. She told me that the doctor had already spoken to her, that even if Wenyard Cooper was revived, he would be in a vegetative state and would never wake up, because at that time the doctor had declared him brain dead.” Harper Johnson recalled that woman outside the operating room, who appeared disheveled yet exuded an innate elegance. When she revealed her identity, the woman’s shock was evident. Though Harper had heard of the Hughes Family, this was the first time she had met them.

She told her that Joshua Hughes was her eldest son and had also been sent to the hospital. She needed something, just two small pieces.

”Mrs. Hughes promised me a large sum of money if I agreed. I didn’t take it; instead, I suggested allowing Evelyn to enter the Hughes Family so you could choose her, because our Evelyn is indeed very pretty. I thought you might want her.” Harper Johnson glanced at her daughter lying in bed. Her face had turned as pale as Joshua Hughes’, devoid of any color. The gun aimed at her temple remained in place. Harper Johnson withdrew her gaze, bowed her head, and continued recounting everything that happened that day.

”She said her son’s eyes were damaged by chemicals and needed an immediate corneal transplant; she wanted Lucas Yates’ eyes...”

His eyes were blood-red, and his thin lips were pale and trembling slightly. The man, who had been as still as a statue, now seemed unable to remain steady, as even the act of breathing began to hurt.

”The doctor insisted that they could not perform a live transplant, but at the time, we family members could choose to abandon the resuscitation, so...”

Joshua Hughes was barely standing, his heart bleeding profusely. Had he not met Avery Jane in her radiant nocturnal journey in that cemetery night, he would never have tasted the sweetness of love nor experienced this heart-wrenching pain in his lifetime.

That person was his mother. Even if they weren’t close, she gave birth to him. So no matter how much he disliked her, when something happened, he could still stand in front of her, intercepting any danger, despite any aversion. But this time, this time she had thrown him into the Inferno, never to be reincarnated.

He was a ruthless person, yet never harmed the innocent. Those who faced his wrath were always wicked. But what mistake had Lucas Yates made? He was a doctor. His occupation was even noble. Even if he disliked and envied Lucas Yates, he couldn’t deny these facts.

Everything started to become clear, slowly unfolding like a movie screen...

Outside the hospital’s operating room, two women, with ulterior motives, had struck a deal for their own interests.

Joshua Hughes forced himself to calm his breathing, trying to absorb everything he’d just heard, but he couldn’t find peace. All he could see and think of was his first encounter with Avery Jane—in the place where Lucas Yates was laid to rest.

Then, as if possessed, he recalled each forceful encounter, every invasion, even that terrifying act of forceful possession. Behind all of these, he could always see those clear and steadfast eyes, persistent yet resolute, wronged to the extreme yet unable to resist. He even used the cruelest methods to force her back when she tried to escape far from him. The way she cried every time, the way she yielded for the sake of love—those memories surged over him like a tidal wave, almost engulfing him. He couldn’t breathe, even his heart nearly stopped beating. This was the most helpless moment of his life...

”Actually, I wasn’t very willing either, but Mrs. Hughes said that even if Evelyn wasn’t chosen, she could help Caleb Cooper advance in his career. I thought if Lucas Yates knew, he would also be willing to help his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, so I...” Harper Johnson lowered her head hesitantly, fully aware of the cruelty of the situation. Yet to say it aloud now, it brought a sense of shame.

Joshua Hughes, his gaze filled with desolation and intense pain, spoke in a voice as coarse as gravel, ”You gave up on resuscitation? Why is there no record of this at the hospital?”
