Worthless Profession: Dragon Tamer

Chapter 195, Let the Dragon Eat It

Translator: Silavin

[This Fallen Corpse Essence had dropped from Lu Luo’s body. Doesn’t this mean Lu Luo’s transformation into a Fallen Corpse Slave is related to this Fallen Corpse Essence?] Thinking back to what Lu Luo had said when he surrounded everyone with so many Monsters, Lu Fan gradually found some logic in it.

[The Fallen Corpse Essence should be able to turn people into Slaves of the Ancient Gods. Once someone becomes a Slave of the Ancient Gods, it is equivalent to being brainwashed. They would henceforth only work for the Ancient Gods. At the same time, people with potential who receive the Fallen Corpse Essence might have their potential fully awakened, like Charles from the Moore Family, allowing him to obtain a more powerful Hidden Profession. If we follow this logic, wouldn’t that mean Charles should also be considered one of the Ancient God’s Slaves?]

[It’s still unknown whether the Moore Family is aware of this. If Charles did indeed become a Slave of the Ancient Gods, and the Moore Family is aware of it, then the conspiracy behind this would be massive…]

Lu Fan did not want to think too much about the whole thing. Whether Charles had any connection with the Ancient Gods could be determined by interacting with him in the National Trial Secret Realm. The key was to figure out what secrets this Fallen Corpse Essence held.

Lu Fan thought for a moment and felt that he would not be able to study this thing by himself. So. he decided to take it back and discuss it with Tu Jing first.

Lu Fan placed the Fallen Corpse Essence away and returned to Lui Fei and the others.

By now, as Lu Luo had completely turned into a skeleton, Shen Cai had realised that she and Lu Luo were truly now separated by life and death.

She had searched for over a year in this harsh environment of the Far North. Although she had finally found him, they did not even get to exchange a single word.

The Lu Luo who had become a Fallen Corpse Slave could not be considered the real Lu Luo.

At the end, although Lu Luo regained his consciousness for a moment, his last words were not words of love for Shen Cai, but a warning to everyone that there were more Fallen Corpse Slaves who had left the Far North, becoming potential threats. His main priority was to tell everyone to be careful, especially of the Fallen Corpse Ruin, which was deeper in the Far North.

From beginning to end, Shen Cai did not even get to hear Lu Luo say “I missed you too.”

Shen Cai was now sobbing loudly, her cries scattered by the cold wind, turning into whimpers.

Lu Fan remained silent beside her, not saying a word.

Lui Fei and the others did the same, standing beside Shen Cai, letting her vent her emotions.

Finally, after crying for who knows how long, Shen Cai began to shakily dig into the snow with her hands. The others understood and also started using their equipment to help Shen Cai dig a deep hole.

Shen Cai, still sniffling, placed Lu Luo’s body into it, then took off the necklace she had been wearing. She gently kissed it, and placed it in Lu Luo’s hand.

Finally, everyone covered Lu Luo’s body with snow, and a small grave was thus made.

Shen Cai memorised the coordinates of this place in her heart. She stood up from the ground, wiped her face, instantly putting away all her previous weakness.

She seemed to return to her previous state, as if she had never seen Lu Luo. It was only her eyes that were a bit swollen.

“Team Leader Lui, what should we do next? Should we go back and report what just happened, or continue exploring?”

Seeing Shen Cai like this, Lu Fan and the others sighed.

[This woman is truly tough.]

Lui Fei thought for a moment, and without asking about Shen Cai’s emotional state, he directly said. “What just happened is very unusual. I think it’s best to report it as soon as possible. As for whether to continue exploring, that depends on Lord Northern Marquis’s next orders.”

Lui Fei’s suggestion was agreed upon by everyone.

The group, having just arrived here and not having had the chance to continue exploring, began to set up an outpost and then used the Transport Array to return back to camp.

Naturally, the one volunteering to report was Lu Fan.

Lu Fan found Tu Jing and told him everything that had just happened. At the same time, he took out the Fallen Corpse Essence.

At this moment, the Fallen Corpse Essence seemed to have lost its power to escape. It was no different from an ordinary gemstone.

However, Lu Fan and Tu Jing both knew that a similar Ancient God Essence had allowed Charles to change into a more powerful Profession, so this thing was definitely not as simple as it seemed.

Tu Jing played with this Fallen Corpse Essence for a long time, and finally said. “It is now clear that the Ancient God in the Far North and the one in Star Strip Country’s Holy Mountain Ruin are the same type of existence. Whether it’s Ancient God Puppets or Ancient God Slaves, they all match up.”

“These Ancient God Slaves are obviously very similar to normal people, and can be understood as Heretics to the Human Race. According to what Lu Luo said before he died, there are still Fallen Corpse Slaves out there, and they have already left the Far North. This is definitely a hidden danger that we must be wary of…”

Lu Fan thought for a moment and said. “Senior Tu, I actually have a rough guess.”

“What guess? Tell me about it.” Tu Jing was interested.

Lu Fan nodded and said: “I think the creation of Ancient God Slaves should have certain limitations. First, corpses generally won’t work. Once a person dies, even if affected by the Ancient God’s Essence, they would only come back to life as a Fallen Corpse Puppets. Second, Monsters won’t work. Or rather, the Ancient Gods are unwilling to let Monsters become Fallen Corpse Slaves. We’ve explored the Far North for so long, and all the Monsters are Fallen Corpse Puppets, with no Fallen Corpse Slaves among them.”

“The creation of Fallen Corpse Slaves should also be related to their original intelligence level. Monsters generally are not intelligent, and act based on instincts, so they most likely don’t qualify to become Fallen Corpse Slaves. This can also explain why Lu Luo mobilised so many Monsters to surround us. He probably wanted to capture us alive and use the Fallen Corpse Essence to turn us into Fallen Corpse Slaves to work for the Ancient Gods.”

“The one thing I can’t figure out is why the Ancient Gods want to create so many Ancient God Slaves.”

Tu Jing made a sound of agreement and said, “The existence of these so-called Ancient Gods actually reminds me of the Heretics that have been appearing in various countries in recent years. These Heretics claim to have received the favour of God, have strong abilities, and are frantically developing followers. They would claim to serve God and welcome their awakening.”

“These Heretics have done many evil deeds, and all countries are using their own power to suppress them, but they can never completely eradicate them from their own country. I’m now wondering if things like Ancient Gods have existed and affected society for far longer than we are aware of. Is it possible for Ancient God Slaves to have long been walking in various countries? It is just that the true form of the Ancient Gods has now only been discovered by us?”

Tu Jing’s words suddenly made Lu Fan think that indeed, in recent years, news about so-called ‘Heretics’ could often be seen.

[These Heretics of the Human Race are indeed very similar to Ancient God Slaves like Lu Luo. Could these Heretics be related to beings like the Ancient Gods?]

[In this world, there are already more than a dozen known Heretical Sects. Did that mean that there are already more than a dozen Ancient Gods who had started to let their Ancient God Slaves roam the world? How terrifying…]

At this point, Tu Jing smiled and said, “It’s actually too early to talk about these things right now. We know too little about the Ancient Gods. The intelligence you’ve brought me is very important. I’ll have someone allocate Military Merits to all members of your squad later. At the same time, I’ll also have someone notify all major cities in Dragon Country to hunt down all missing Griffin Legion members from the Far North.”

“Many Griffin Legion members have gone missing here over the past year. I originally thought they had died from the harsh weather and Monster attacks. But now, it is very likely that they have become Fallen Corpse Slaves and have left this place for other parts of Dragon Country. These people are all hidden dangers if left alone. It’s best to find them through a manhunt.”

Saying this, Tu Jing sighed and said. “It’s a pity for these Griffin Legion Brothers under my command. They died for the country, but in the end, they still have to be hunted down by the country…”

Lu Fan spoke up to comfort him. “You have no choice. All of them will be able to understand…”

Tu Jing nodded, then turned his gaze back to the Fallen Corpse Essence in his hand. “As for this thing… are you interested in researching it thoroughly with me? You said earlier that after this thing separated from Lu Luo, Lu Luo regained consciousness for a brief moment. I think it must be related to the Ancient God’s control over its slaves.”

Lu Fan was also interested and asked. “How do we research this thing? Surely we can’t use it on people, right?”

Tu Jing smiled and said. “Of course not. I’ll have someone bring a Griffin later. We’ll have the Griffin swallow this thing to see what changes occur. If it turns into a Fallen Corpse Slave, it basically proves that Fallen Corpse Essence is the key to making people submit to the Ancient God.”

Saying this, Tu Jing narrowed his eyes. “It also means that Charles from the Star Strip Country will be more problematic to deal with, and he may have already become an Ancient God Slave.”

Lu Fan thought for a moment and asked. “If the Griffin turns into a Fallen Corpse Slave, won’t it be controlled by the Ancient God?”

Tu Jing added. “If that happens, we can only kill the Griffin. Although Griffins are valuable, this is still better than experimenting on people. As for using death row inmates, I’ve thought about it, but there aren’t any death row inmates here. If we make a Transport Array to send people over, it would consume a lot of materials. The value of these materials is no less than that of a Griffin.”

Lu Fan had not expected that making a Transport Array from the Far North to other places would be so difficult. It seemed that just his round trip consumed materials equivalent to the price of a Griffin. In other words, Tu Jing had spent a fortune just to bring him here.

Lu Fan thought for a moment and suddenly had an idea. He said, “Senior Tu, I have a method that might save you from losing a Griffin.”

“Oh? What method?” Tu Jing’s eyes lit up when he heard this.

Lu Fan smiled and said: “Why don’t we let my Dragon eat this Fallen Corpse Essence?”

“What???”
