Yandere Stream

Eden opened his eyes, and for a moment there was nothing. No floor beneath him, no ceiling above him, no sound, and no weight. He couldn’t even tell whether he was standing or falling. Then sensation returned all at once. His feet touched something solid, and he inhaled sharply as he looked around. He was standing in a field where grass stretched beneath his shoes and swayed gently in a wind he couldn’t feel. Above him hung a pale blue sky filled with thin clouds drifting lazily across the horizon, while distant birds sang somewhere beyond his sight. The scene was peaceful, almost unnaturally so, and that peace immediately put him on edge.

Slowly turning in a circle, Eden searched for anything familiar. There were no books, no floating pages, no Aria, no other Eden, and no stranger waiting in the distance. For a moment, it seemed as though he was completely alone. Then he noticed a small wooden house standing at the edge of the field. Something about it felt familiar, though not in the way a childhood home might. It wasn’t Luna’s house, nor any place he remembered living. Instead, it felt familiar in a way that made no sense, as though he had remembered it long before he had ever seen it.

The front door opened, and the stranger stepped outside. Without the book in his hands, he looked almost painfully ordinary. His sleeves were rolled to his elbows, and his simple clothes made him seem more like a farmer than a creator of worlds. He walked toward Eden and stopped several feet away. ”So,” he said quietly, ”you’ve finally reached the beginning.” Eden narrowed his eyes and immediately replied that the man had created him. The stranger smiled faintly and asked if that was what she had told him. When Eden asked who he meant, the man answered, ”The first character. The little girl.”

Eden’s expression hardened. The stranger confirmed that she had been the first thing ever written, but when Eden demanded to know what that made him, the man studied him for a long moment before answering with a single word: complicated. Eden nearly laughed at the absurdity of it. He stepped forward and told the stranger he was done with riddles. The man acknowledged that fact and admitted Eden deserved answers. Lowering his voice, Eden asked the question that mattered most. He wanted to know why he had been created.

Silence settled over the field before the stranger finally looked toward the house. He explained that when he had first imagined Eden, he hadn’t imagined Eden at all. Eden had originally been a question. Confused, Eden asked what kind of question a person could possibly be. The stranger answered that he had wanted to know what would happen if someone could remember everything and still choose to love. Luna, he explained, had been part of that question. Aria had been the answer Eden kept refusing to accept. The explanation only made Eden angrier. He told the stranger he didn’t get to talk about Luna and Aria as though they were pieces on a board.

The stranger calmly disagreed. Looking directly into Eden’s eyes, he said they were people. They had become people long before he truly understood what he had created. Eden looked away and argued that if the stranger had created them, they couldn’t possibly be real. The man shook his head and replied that creation did not determine reality. What mattered was experience. If a person could love, suffer, remember, regret, hope, and make choices, then what difference did it make whether they began as a thought? He touched his own chest and explained that bodies could begin as ideas and memories could begin as words, but choices belonged to the people who made them.

For the first time, the answer didn’t feel like another layer hiding beneath a deeper mystery. It felt honest, and that honesty unsettled Eden more than any lie ever could. He asked why the stranger had been controlling him all this time. The man answered that he hadn’t. Eden immediately pushed back, pointing out that the stranger had written his actions. The man admitted that sometimes he had, particularly when Eden was inside a story. When Eden demanded to know what happened outside the story, the stranger smiled and called him stubborn before finally answering. Outside the page, he said, he had never been able to control Eden at all.

Looking around the field again, Eden asked where they were. The stranger answered that they were standing on the first page. That answer frustrated Eden. If they were still inside a story, then surely he couldn’t make real choices. The stranger’s expression softened, and he reminded Eden that he already had. Confused, Eden asked what choice he meant. The stranger pointed toward the sky. Words slowly appeared among the clouds: EDEN OPENED HIS EYES. A moment later they vanished and were replaced with another sentence: EDEN STOOD IN THE FIELD.

Watching the words form overhead, Eden clenched his jaw. He accused the stranger of still writing him. The man disagreed and explained that he could describe Eden, but describing someone and controlling them were not the same thing. Eden demanded proof and challenged him to write that he knelt. The stranger didn’t argue. Instead, he picked up a piece of paper lying near a tree and wrote something on it. Eden felt nothing. No force pulled at his body. No compulsion pushed him to move. He remained exactly where he was. When the stranger held up the paper, Eden read the words written there: EDEN REFUSED TO KNEEL.

His eyes widened. The stranger smiled and asked if he understood now. Eden argued that the man had still written the refusal. The stranger agreed but pointed out that Eden had chosen to refuse. When Eden asked if he had known that would happen, the stranger surprised him by answering no. He hadn’t known. He had simply hoped. That answer stayed with Eden. For years he had believed freedom meant escaping the Author, escaping the Reader, escaping the story itself. Now he wondered if freedom had never meant becoming unwritten. Maybe freedom meant being written and still becoming something the writer could never fully predict.

Eden’s gaze drifted back to the house, and he asked what was inside. The stranger answered with a single word: everything. Unsatisfied, Eden followed him to the front door. Inside was a simple room containing a wooden table, two chairs, a bookshelf, and dozens of photographs hanging on the walls. As Eden moved closer, his breath caught. He saw Luna, Aria, his father, the little girl, the First Reader, the other Eden, and countless familiar faces. Mixed among them were photographs he had never seen before. Luna laughing in a kitchen. Aria asleep on a couch. His father holding him as a baby. Eden and Luna standing together on a beach.

He reached out and touched one of the photographs. When he asked when it had happened, the stranger answered that it hadn’t. Confused, Eden demanded to know why it was there. The stranger explained that it was there because it could have happened. The answer hurt more than Eden expected. Looking at the countless unrealized possibilities hanging on the walls, he realized how many lives had never become memories. When he asked why he couldn’t choose Luna, the stranger’s expression became sad. He explained that some choices couldn’t be made alone. Luna had a choice too.

Eden’s eyes widened. He immediately asked where she was. The stranger remained silent at first, but when Eden pressed him again, he finally answered that Luna was reading. The response made Eden freeze. Reading what? The stranger pointed toward the bookshelf. Sitting apart from the other books was a single worn volume. Its cover carried one name.

LUNA.

Eden instinctively reached for it, but the stranger caught his wrist. He warned him not to open the book. When Eden demanded a reason, the man hesitated before explaining that if he opened it, Luna would know he was there. Instead of discouraging him, the warning only made Eden more determined. He stared at the book, considering his next move, when he suddenly heard something else. A faint sound drifted through the room. Someone was crying.

The stranger immediately went still. Eden turned toward the noise. Ignoring the stranger’s warning, he followed it to the far wall. The sound seemed to come from behind the bookshelf. He pushed the shelf aside and revealed a small door hidden behind it, the sort that might lead into a child’s bedroom. Carved into the wood was handwriting he recognized instantly.

IF YOU FOUND THIS, DON’T TRUST THE AUTHOR.

Eden stared at the message before slowly turning back toward the stranger. The man had claimed he didn’t control him. He had claimed he wanted Eden to choose. He had claimed Luna was merely reading. Yet she had left behind a warning. Without waiting for an explanation, Eden placed his hand on the door and pulled it open.

A wave of cold air rushed through the room. Beyond the doorway was darkness. Then a woman’s voice emerged from within.

”Eden...”

He froze.

It was Luna.

Not a memory. Not a recording. Not an echo.

Luna.

Her voice trembled as she spoke again. ”Eden, if you can hear me... don’t believe him.”

The stranger closed his eyes. Eden stared into the darkness and called her name. Luna answered immediately.

”He’s not the Author.”

Eden’s blood ran cold. He looked back toward the stranger, but for the first time the man didn’t deny anything. Luna continued speaking.

”And, Dad...”

Eden’s heart stopped.

”...he isn’t the first character either.”

The darkness beyond the doorway shifted as though something were approaching. Luna’s voice dropped to a whisper.

”He’s the first reader.”

Eden’s eyes widened. For the first time since they had met, the stranger looked genuinely afraid. Then something stepped out of the darkness. It had Luna’s face, but its eyes were completely black. The figure looked directly at Eden and smiled.

”Welcome back.”

The door slammed shut behind them. Outside the house, a voice suddenly began reading aloud. ”Chapter One.” After a brief pause, it continued. ”Once upon a time...”

The stranger whispered a single word.

”No.”

The voice continued anyway.

”...there was a boy named Eden.”

As those words echoed across the field, the first page began again.
