Chapter 171: Chapter 171 — The Story Above

The voice disappeared, and for several seconds Eden couldn’t hear anything except his own breathing. The darkness around him remained perfectly still. The manuscript lay open on the desk with its pages frozen in place, while the figure who had called himself the First Author stood motionless on the opposite side of the room. Even the little boy had stopped moving. Then Eden noticed something strange. The boy was staring upward. Not at a ceiling—there wasn’t one—but at something beyond the darkness itself. Eden followed his gaze.

At first there was nothing. Then a thin white line appeared, suspended in the darkness. Another formed beside it, then another, and within seconds hundreds of lines intersected above them until they became something Eden instantly recognized. A page. An enormous page stretched farther than he could see, covered in thousands of sentences. Except the sentences weren’t describing the room. They were describing them. Eden felt his stomach twist as one sentence changed. Eden looked up. His blood ran cold. Another appeared beneath it. He began to realize what he was seeing. He took a step backward, and immediately the sentence changed again. Eden stepped backward.

He froze. The boy looked at him and quietly said that he saw it now. Eden stared at the enormous page and whispered that it was writing what he did. The boy nodded, and the First Author finally spoke, confirming that it was. Eden turned toward him and demanded to know whether he was responsible. The Author shook his head and said no. When Eden asked who was doing it instead, he received no answer. Above them another sentence appeared. Eden became angry. His fists tightened. ”Stop,” he said, but the page only changed again. Eden told them to stop. His heart pounded as he looked around desperately and demanded to know who was writing the story.

Nothing answered him directly. Instead, the page changed once more. Eden asked who was writing the story. The boy immediately warned him not to ask again. Confused, Eden turned toward him and demanded to know why. The child pointed upward, and new sentences appeared one after another. Eden turned toward the boy.The boy pointed upward. The boy warned Eden not to ask again. Eden stared in horror. The writing wasn’t predicting his actions. It wasn’t describing them after they happened. It was deciding them before they occurred.

The realization hit him hard enough to make him dizzy. He turned back to the First Author and reminded him that he had claimed Eden was an author too. The Author agreed. When Eden demanded to know why he couldn’t control any of this, the answer came immediately. He wasn’t writing anymore. Eden’s expression hardened as he asked who was. The Author looked up at the enormous page and quietly replied that it was something that had learned how.

The little boy moved closer and told Eden there was something he needed to understand. The First Story hadn’t been created when Eden wrote the first world. Confused, Eden asked when it had begun. The boy pointed at the page overhead and answered that it started when something wrote him. Silence followed. Eden looked upward as his own name appeared across the page. EDEN. Then it was crossed out. Another appeared. EDEN MERCER. Crossed out. Then THE AUTHOR. Crossed out. THE CHARACTER. Crossed out. Finally the page became blank again.

Eden stared and whispered that it didn’t know what to call him. The First Author shook his head and replied that it knew exactly what to call him. When Eden demanded an answer, the Author remained silent. Instead, black ink began spreading across the page. Slowly, one word formed. SON. Eden’s face went pale. The Author looked away, and the little boy stopped breathing entirely. Eden stared at the word and asked whose son he was. No one answered. The ink continued moving until another phrase appeared. SON OF—

The sentence never finished. The page suddenly trembled, and an instant later the entire enormous sheet tore apart. The sound was deafening. Eden threw an arm over his face as fragments of paper rained down around them. The darkness beyond the tear split open. Something was coming through. Not a monster. Not an animal. A hand. A human hand pushed through the torn page as if the paper were nothing more than fabric. Fingers curled around the edge. Then an arm emerged, followed by a shoulder. Someone was climbing through.

The First Author immediately stepped backward, and for the first time Eden saw genuine fear in him. He ordered Eden to get behind him. Shocked, Eden reminded him that he had once claimed he couldn’t feel fear. The Author admitted that he had lied. At the same time, the little boy grabbed Eden’s sleeve and begged him to run. Eden demanded to know where he was supposed to go when there was nowhere to run. The boy could only admit that he knew.

The figure finally pulled itself through the tear. Its face remained hidden. It wore an ordinary black shirt and ordinary jeans. Nothing about its appearance should have frightened Eden, yet the instant its feet touched the floor every page in the room turned blank. The First Author dropped to one knee. The little boy covered his eyes. Eden remained standing. Slowly, the figure raised its head. At first there was only a blur where its face should have been, as if reality itself refused to finish drawing its features. Then it spoke.

”You’re awake.”

Eden’s heart stopped. He knew that voice. Not from the story. Not from the Readers. Not from the Witnesses. From childhood. A memory surfaced of a man sitting beside his bed with a gentle hand resting against his hair while a familiar voice told him to go to sleep. Eden’s lips parted as he whispered a single word. ”Dad?”

The figure went completely still. The First Author shot him a sharp look, while the little boy whispered a terrified no. Slowly, the figure raised its hand, and the blur covering its face began to disappear. First came the eyes. Then a nose. Then a mouth. Finally a face. His father’s face.

Yet Eden immediately knew something was wrong. His father had been dead for years. And still the figure smiled exactly the way he remembered. It greeted him warmly, calling him son. Eden couldn’t move. Suddenly the room vanished around him. He was a child again, sitting in the living room. His father sat on the couch. Luna hadn’t been born yet. Aria didn’t exist. There were no worlds, no stories, and no Readers. Just a boy and his father.

His father smiled and told him he had been gone for a long time. Tears filled Eden’s eyes as he whispered that none of this was real. The figure chuckled and replied that Eden had said that before. The words struck him immediately. The familiarity. The repetition. The pattern. This wasn’t his father. It was something wearing his father’s memories. Eden demanded to know what it wanted. The figure stood and calmly replied that it wanted him to come home.

His breathing became unsteady. Eden insisted he didn’t have a home. The figure smiled and said that of course he did. Behind him, a small wooden door appeared. Eden recognized it instantly. It was the front door of his childhood home, the place he had lived before Luna, before becoming a husband, before becoming a father, before everything. The figure opened it, and warm light spilled into the room. Laughter echoed from within. His father’s voice. His mother’s voice. A younger version of himself running through the hallway.

For one terrible moment, Eden wanted to step through. He wanted to be a child again, before loss, before responsibility, before death, before stories. Then the little boy grabbed his hand and begged him not to do it. Eden looked down and saw tears running down the child’s face. The boy warned him that this was the oldest lie of all. Confused, Eden asked what he meant. The child looked at the glowing doorway and whispered that the lie was believing you could go back.

The figure standing inside the doorway smiled and asked why Eden would listen to him. The boy shook his head and insisted it was because he knew what happened next. Eden turned toward him and asked what that was. Through tears, the child explained that Eden would walk through the door and forget everything again. Silence followed. Eden stared at the doorway. The warm house. The familiar voices. The impossible promise of a life before everything had gone wrong.

He took a single step forward. The boy tightened his grip and called his name. Eden stopped. The figure’s smile widened as it invited him to come home. For a long time Eden simply stared at the doorway. Then he looked at the little boy. Then at the First Author. Finally, he turned his gaze toward the thing wearing his father’s face and quietly said no.

The smile vanished. Eden stepped backward and admitted that he had already gone home. The figure’s expression became unreadable. Though his voice shook, Eden continued. He had simply spent too long trying to find home again. Instantly the doorway slammed shut. The figure’s face twisted, not with anger but with something far worse. Disappointment.

Then it quietly told Eden that he was finally ready. Confused, Eden asked what he was ready for. The figure raised one hand. The entire room cracked. The desk split down the middle. The manuscript burst into flames. The First Author screamed. The little boy was thrown backward. Above them, beyond the torn pages and collapsing darkness, something enormous opened its eyes.

The figure looked up at it before turning back to Eden. It told him he was ready to meet the one who had written his father and the one who had written it as well. Eden froze as the darkness swallowed everything. Then, somewhere far above the collapsing story, a final sentence appeared.

EDEN WAS NOT THE FIRST CHARACTER.

A second sentence followed.

HE WAS NOT THE FIRST AUTHOR.

Then, slowly, the final truth revealed itself.

HE WAS THE FIRST STORY.
