Yandere Stream

Eden stared at the television for several seconds, unable to make sense of the words displayed on the screen. The sentence remained motionless against the black background.

YOU HAVE BEEN HERE BEFORE.

A moment later, a second line appeared beneath it.

THIS TIME, YOU ARE THE READER.

Something cold moved through Eden’s chest. He turned toward the place where Aria had been standing only moments ago, but there was nothing there. No footprints, no open door, no sign that anyone had ever been beside him. The hospital room looked completely ordinary. A bed sat against one wall, a window overlooked the city, a chair rested near the corner, and a small table stood beside the bed. A heart monitor blinked quietly nearby. Everything was exactly where it should have been, and that was what frightened him. After everything he had seen, ordinary had become more terrifying than monsters.

”Aria?” he called, his voice sounding weak in the room.

Nothing answered.

Eden stepped away from the television and moved toward the hallway. ”Aria!” The hospital remained silent. He pushed through the door and entered the corridor, where a nurse walked past without looking up. He grabbed her arm.

”Excuse me.”

The woman stopped and immediately looked concerned, the kind of professional concern reserved for strangers who were clearly confused. ”Sir?”

”My daughter.”

The nurse blinked. ”What about her?”

”She was just here.”

The woman glanced down the hallway. ”Who?”

”Aria.”

Her expression became even more confused. ”I don’t know anyone by that name.”

Eden stared at her. ”She was standing right beside me.”

”Sir, you’ve been alone since you woke up.”

”No.”

The answer came too quickly. The nurse frowned.

”Eden, you’ve been awake for less than an hour. Your doctor told us you might experience confusion.”

”Don’t call it confusion.”

The nurse fell silent. Eden realized his hands were shaking and forced them still. ”She was here.”

”I’m sure whoever you saw felt real.”

”She wasn’t whoever.” His voice cracked. ”She’s my daughter.”

The nurse watched him for a long moment before gently pulling her arm free. ”Eden, you don’t have a daughter.”

The hallway seemed to stretch around him. He heard the sentence again, not merely as words but as something deeper, something that had already been written.

You don’t have a daughter.

He stepped backward.

”No.”

The nurse walked away, disappearing around the corner. Eden remained where he was until his eyes drifted toward the floor. There were two sets of footprints. One belonged to him. The other was a trail of small, bare footprints leading away from the hospital room toward the elevators.

His heart stopped.

He followed them.

The footprints continued down the hallway one after another. They looked wet, yet there was no water anywhere. Eden crouched and touched one. It was cold. Real. He stood and called Aria’s name again, but only silence answered. The trail ended in front of an elevator.

The doors opened.

Inside was darkness.

Not an unlit elevator. Not a shadowy space.

Darkness.

A black emptiness with no visible walls beyond the threshold.

Eden didn’t move.

A voice came from inside.

”You took longer this time.”

His breathing stopped. He knew that voice. He had heard it in the white space, in the corridor of pages, inside the hospital, and in countless places that should not have existed. Yet this time it wasn’t coming from the elevator.

It was coming from behind him.

Eden slowly turned.

The hallway was empty.

Then he noticed the nurse standing at the far end of the corridor. Except she wasn’t the nurse anymore. Her face was blank. Not faceless. Blank. As though someone had erased every feature and forgotten to replace them.

Eden stumbled backward.

The woman tilted her head.

”You shouldn’t have followed her.”

”Who?”

”The girl.”

His heart pounded.

”Where is she?”

The woman pointed toward the elevator. ”She went where readers go when the story forgets them.”

Eden looked toward the darkness. ”What does that mean?”

The woman smiled.

”You’ll find out.”

The elevator doors began closing. Eden rushed forward and shoved his hand between them. The doors stopped. Something moved within the darkness.

Something was breathing.

Before he could think better of it, Eden stepped inside. The doors shut behind him, and the elevator began descending. There were no floor numbers. No indicators. Only a small screen above the doors.

At first it was blank.

Then words appeared.

Chapter 176

Eden stared at them.

The letters shifted.

CURRENT READER: EDEN

He felt sick.

”No.”

Another line appeared.

CURRENT STORY: UNKNOWN

Then another.

AUTHOR: UNKNOWN

And then:

CHARACTER: UNKNOWN

Eden stared at the final line as it flickered and changed.

SUBJECT BEING READ: EDEN

He backed away from the screen.

”No.”

The elevator continued descending.

”Eden.”

He froze.

That voice.

Luna.

He turned and found her standing behind him.

His wife.

Exactly as he remembered her.

The same eyes. The same smile. The same slight tilt of her head whenever she was about to say something that would annoy him.

Eden couldn’t breathe.

”Luna?”

She smiled sadly.

”You always say my name like you’re afraid I’ll disappear.”

Eden took a step toward her. ”You died.”

”I know.”

”You’re not real.”

”I know.”

”Then what are you?”

Luna looked toward the screen above the elevator doors before meeting his gaze again.

”The question isn’t what I am. It’s who is looking.”

The elevator stopped.

The doors opened.

Eden expected another hospital corridor. Instead, he found himself staring into a simple room containing a desk, a chair, a lamp, and hundreds of books stacked against the walls. Some were enormous. Others were small enough to fit inside a child’s hands.

He stepped out.

Luna remained inside the elevator.

”Come on,” Eden said.

She shook her head.

”I can’t.”

”Why?”

”Because I’m not in this Chapter.”

The doors began closing. Eden reached toward her.

”Luna!”

She smiled.

For one brief second she looked exactly like the woman he had loved. Then she whispered something he couldn’t hear.

The doors closed.

She disappeared.

The elevator vanished with her.

Eden stood alone.

Slowly, he turned toward the desk.

A book lay open upon it.

His name was written across the cover.

EDEN

His hands trembled as he approached. The pages contained his life. His childhood. His father. The accident. Luna. Aria. The worlds he had created. Every death. Every resurrection. Every time he had awakened somewhere new. Every time he had forgotten.

He turned another page.

The hospital.

Another page.

The hospital again.

Another.

The white room.

Another.

The corridor of pages.

He flipped faster and faster. Chapter after Chapter. Life after life. Story after story. Eventually he reached the newest page.

There was only one sentence.

Eden entered the room.

He stared.

A second sentence appeared.

Eden looked around. The room was empty.

His blood went cold.

Another sentence formed beneath it.

Eden realized someone was watching him.

Eden slowly looked up.

The lamp above the desk flickered. For the first time since entering the room, he noticed something strange. There was a chair across from the desk, and it was still moving slightly, as though someone had only just stood up.

He approached it.

A piece of paper rested on the seat.

Eden picked it up.

Three words were written across it.

I REMEMBER YOU.

He stared at them.

Then a sound came from behind him.

A page turning.

Eden spun around.

The book on the desk was closing by itself, one page at a time, until only the cover remained visible. Then the cover opened again and revealed a fresh page. This time the handwriting was different. Smaller. Messier. Almost childish.

Don’t turn around.

Eden stopped breathing.

He felt something standing behind him, close enough that he could sense its presence.

He didn’t move.

Another sentence appeared.

It knows you’re reading.

Eden swallowed.

”What are you?”

Silence.

Then the book answered.

The one who has been reading you.

His fingers tightened around the paper.

”You’ve been watching everything?”

The page remained still for a moment.

Then new words appeared.

Not everything.

Another line followed.

Only the parts you were allowed to remember.

Eden felt his stomach twist.

”What about Aria?”

The page stayed blank.

”Where is my daughter?”

Nothing.

”Answer me.”

The lamp flickered again.

A new sentence appeared.

You keep calling her your daughter.

Eden stared.

Another sentence formed beneath it.

That’s why the story had to remove her.

His heart sank.

”Why?”

The answer appeared slowly.

Because she remembered who she was before Eden remembered who he was.

The room grew colder.

Eden looked toward the hundreds of books surrounding him.

Every single one suddenly opened.

Pages began turning.

Thousands of pages.

Thousands of lives.

Thousands of Edens.

Buried among them, he saw Aria.

Not one Aria.

Hundreds.

Then thousands.

A child. A teenager. An old woman. A soldier. A doctor. A monster. A mother. A stranger. A Reader.

Every version looked toward him.

Then every Aria turned the same page.

The sound echoed through the room.

FLIP.

The books stopped.

One final page appeared inside every book.

The same sentence was written across all of them.

SHE IS NOT LOST.

Eden’s breath caught.

For the first time since Aria vanished, hope returned.

Then a second sentence appeared.

SHE IS READING TOO.

Eden stared at the words.

Somewhere beyond the room, beyond the books, beyond every story he had ever known, a child’s voice whispered softly:

”Dad?”

Eden turned.

No one was there.

Only another door.

Carved into it were four words.

THE READER IS WAITING.

The door slowly opened. Beyond it lay darkness, and from somewhere inside came the sound of someone laughing. Not a monster. Not an Author. Not a Witness.

A human laugh.

A familiar one.

Eden recognized it immediately.

It was his own.

Then the voice spoke.

”Come in, Eden. You’ve been trying to find the person reading your story.”

There was a pause before the voice continued.

”Now you get to meet him.”
