Yandere Stream

The sound of pages turning continued in the darkness, one page after another, each turn seeming to come from somewhere farther away while somehow drawing closer to Eden at the same time. The sound traveled through the void like footsteps in an empty hallway, slow and deliberate, as though whoever was making them had nowhere else to be. Eden couldn’t see Luna, Mira, Adrian, Finn, or even his own hands, but he could hear their breathing, and for the moment that was enough. He told everyone to stay where they were. Finn answered from somewhere to his left that he had no intention of going anywhere, while Adrian’s voice came from the opposite direction. Eden counted the breaths carefully. There were four, then five. Nobody was still with them. Eve was somewhere ahead. The pages continued turning. Luna’s voice finally emerged from the darkness, telling Eden not to move because she could no longer tell which version of his voice was real. The warning froze him. A second voice whispered his name, sounding exactly like Luna. Then another came from behind him. More voices followed until dozens were calling his name, some belonging to people he loved, some to people he had forgotten, and some sounding disturbingly like himself. Then Mira’s voice cut through the noise and warned him not to answer. Eden followed her voice and found her hand in the darkness. She immediately grabbed his and told him not to let go. When he asked what this place was, Mira quietly explained that they were inside Eve’s memory. The pages stopped turning. Silence followed. Mira’s grip tightened as she admitted that Eve knew they were there. Eden challenged her to come forward, but Mira confessed that she was afraid. The honesty surprised him. When he asked why, she explained that Eve didn’t fight people. She told them the truth, and for people like them, that was far more dangerous.

A small light appeared in the distance. Warm and gentle, it gradually expanded until it revealed a room containing a desk, a chair, and Eve herself sitting calmly while reading a black book with no title. She looked up and invited them closer. Mira tried to stop Eden, but Eve only smiled and remarked that he had always been stubborn. Eden demanded to know how she knew him. Eve answered that she had been there when he made his first choice. She admitted she had been watching from the beginning because someone had to. When Eden accused her of calling herself the First Reader, she dismissed the title, claiming she had never named herself anything and that people only used names because they made them feel safer. Eden asked what she was reading. Eve opened the black book and answered that she was reading him—not his story, but his possibilities. The pages contained thousands of names, each accompanied by dates. Some names were crossed out while others were highlighted. Eden saw countless variations of himself, including Kai Mercer, Cael, Adrian, Finn, and many others he didn’t recognize. Then he noticed Mira’s name, Luna’s name, and finally Eve’s own. Confused, he asked why her name appeared in the book. Eve calmly replied that she had been written too. When Eden pointed out that she had claimed to exist before the first word, Eve answered with a statement that made no sense at all: she had written herself into the story before the story existed. Mira immediately called it impossible, but Eve simply asked if it truly was.

The room dissolved around them. The desk vanished, the walls disappeared, and the floor fell away until they stood within an endless white expanse filled with floating books. Thousands upon thousands of them drifted through the void, each containing a different world, each world holding another story and another beginning. Eden slowly turned as he took in the impossible sight. Eve explained that these were every possible story that had been remembered. When he asked what happened to the stories nobody remembered, she answered that they disappeared forever. Eden immediately looked toward Nobody and finally understood her purpose. She was the part of him that forgot, the fragment that protected forgotten stories. When he asked Eve about her role, she explained that she remembered them because someone had to. Eden wondered how long she had been doing this. Her smile faded as she admitted it had been long enough to watch him die. When he asked which death she meant, Eve answered quietly that she had witnessed all of them. She then shattered another assumption by telling him he had only lived one life. The thousands of versions he remembered were not separate incarnations, resets, or reincarnations. They were possibilities. Kai had been a possibility. Cael had been a possibility. Adrian, however, was different. Adrian was a real person. So was Finn. So was Mira. Luna, according to Eve, was more real than Eden could possibly understand. When Eden demanded to know what that made him, Eve answered that he was the memory connecting them all. He wasn’t the person he thought he was. He was the story they all remembered.

The revelation left him shaken. Luna quietly confirmed that she had always known. When Eden asked why nobody had told him, she explained that he had never been ready. This time, she insisted, it wasn’t a lie. She took his hand and revealed the truth he had never been allowed to know. He had never been meant to wake up because if he did, he would remember why he had been created. Eve opened the black book to a single page containing one sentence: I created Eden because I wanted someone to remember me. Eden immediately recognized it as her writing. When he asked if that meant she had created him, Eve turned the statement around. She told him that he had created her because he had been the first person to remember her. That act had made her real. Suddenly they found themselves trapped in a paradox. He existed because of her, and she existed because of him. When Eden asked who came first, Eve simply smiled and said that was the question.

Before he could press further, the black book slammed shut. Every floating book vanished at once. Eve’s expression changed. Something was wrong. A crack had appeared in the white space—not a doorway or a portal, but a wound. Blackness seeped through it. Nobody immediately stepped backward. Mira grabbed Luna. Even Nobody admitted she didn’t know what was happening. For the first time, genuine fear appeared in Eve’s eyes. The crack widened, and a hand reached through. Then another. Something slowly pulled itself into the white expanse. The creature was tall and impossibly thin, as though it had been drawn with black ink and erased over and over again. Its face possessed no features except a single line where a mouth should have been. Eve whispered a terrified denial. When Eden asked what it was, Eve revealed that it was something that existed before her. He reminded her that she had claimed nothing existed before the first story. Her answer was simple. She had been wrong. The creature lifted its head and spoke with a voice that was neither loud nor threatening, only strangely gentle. It remembered a time when there was no one to remember. The statement sent a chill through everyone present. Eve stepped backward while the creature calmly informed her that she should never have survived. Eve answered that neither should it. The creature merely smiled.

Eden stepped between them and demanded to know what it was. After a long silence, the being answered. It was the Forgotten Story. At once the white space began collapsing. Books fell from the sky. Worlds shattered. Memories screamed. Luna seized Eden’s hand and urged him to run. When he asked where, she pointed toward the only thing that remained intact—the black book. Eve grabbed it and shouted for everyone to stay together. They ran while the Forgotten simply watched. It didn’t need to chase them. Every page that touched its fingers vanished completely. Not burned. Not destroyed. Forgotten. Eden immediately understood the horror of that power. If the creature reached them, nobody would remember they had ever existed, including themselves. The Forgotten looked directly at him and spoke. Eden had wanted a life. The Forgotten wanted something else. It wanted to be remembered. The white space shattered completely, and Eden, Luna, Mira, Adrian, Finn, Nobody, and Eve were hurled into darkness.

When Eden opened his eyes again, he found himself lying in a hospital bed. A heart monitor beeped steadily beside him. His mother sat in a chair nearby, crying softly. Looking down, he realized his hands were tiny. He was six years old again. His mother noticed he was awake and asked if he could hear her. Before he could answer, another voice called his name from the hallway. Mira stood in the doorway, but she wasn’t alone. Luna stood behind her. Then Adrian. Then Finn. And behind all of them was Eve. She looked pale, and the black book was gone. In a strained whisper, she told Eden not to say anything. Confused, he asked why. Eve glanced toward the far end of the hallway. Something was approaching. Bare feet slapped softly against the floor with slow, measured steps. Eden stared as the Forgotten emerged from the distance. This time it no longer wore a faceless mask. It had a human face. His face. The creature smiled at him and whispered only four words.

”Now we can begin.”
