Yandere Stream

The first thing Eden noticed was that nobody was moving. Mira stood frozen with one hand still resting against her side, while Cael’s mouth was slightly open as though he had been caught halfway through speaking. Aria remained beneath the tree with her eyes fixed on the black sky, and Luna stood beside Eden with her fingers wrapped tightly around his wrist. Not one person breathed. Then Eden realized something even worse. He couldn’t hear the rain anymore. The wind had stopped, the leaves weren’t moving, and even the distant sounds of the town had vanished. The entire world had become perfectly still.

Eden looked upward. The black sky stretched from horizon to horizon, swallowing every star. It wasn’t simply dark—it looked flat, like ink spread across a sheet of paper. Then a single white sentence appeared.

THERE IS MORE THAN ONE READER.

Another sentence appeared beneath it.

THERE ALWAYS HAS BEEN.

Eden’s stomach tightened as he looked around. ”Who are they?” Nobody answered. He turned toward the people surrounding him and repeated the question, demanding an answer. The doctor finally spoke, explaining that they were everyone who had ever wondered what happened to him. Eden stared at him in confusion and insisted that the explanation made no sense. The doctor replied that it didn’t have to. When Eden demanded a real answer, the doctor looked toward the sky and explained that the Readers were not necessarily people. They were attention itself. Every time someone remembered him, imagined him, feared him, dreamed about him, told his story, or wondered what had happened to him, they became part of the audience.

Eden looked at Luna, trying to understand. If that was true, then the Readers weren’t controlling the story. Luna confirmed that they weren’t; they were only witnessing it. Eden swallowed and asked why the story reacted to them if they were only observers. Luna’s expression grew serious as she explained that stories needed someone to hear them. Eden looked back at the black sky and asked how many Readers there were now. Luna hesitated before admitting that she didn’t know. Before either of them could say more, a strange sound rolled through the darkness.

It wasn’t thunder. It wasn’t an explosion. It was applause.

At first it was quiet, but it grew louder and louder until it sounded like thousands, then millions, of hands clapping at once. The noise swept across the world. Eden covered his ears and begged for it to stop, but nobody moved. The applause continued. Mira looked around nervously while Cael shook his head in confusion. The doctor simply smiled and remarked that they were excited. When Eden demanded to know what they were excited about, the doctor looked directly at him and answered with a single word: him.

The applause stopped as suddenly as it had begun. Silence returned. Then a voice spoke from the sky. It greeted Eden in a tone that wasn’t threatening, almost friendly. Eden looked upward and asked who it was. After a brief pause, the voice answered that it was someone who had been waiting for a very long time. Another voice immediately interrupted, telling him not to listen. A third voice urged him to listen instead. Soon more voices joined in, overlapping until the sky was filled with countless speakers. Some sounded young, others old. Some were laughing, some crying, some angry, and some excited. Every one of them wanted Eden’s attention.

The noise became unbearable. He couldn’t understand what they were saying, and he could barely think. He shouted for them to stop, but nothing changed. Eventually he fell to his knees. Luna immediately knelt beside him and grabbed his face, forcing him to look at her. She told him to focus only on her voice and asked if he still remembered her. When Eden answered yes, she told him to hold on to that feeling. He closed his eyes and focused entirely on her. Luna was warm, familiar, and real. Gradually the other voices faded—not because they had disappeared, but because he stopped giving them his attention.

When Eden opened his eyes again, the sky was silent. The faceless creature stood several feet away, its new mouth curved into a faint smile. It remarked that Eden had learned quickly. Eden rose to his feet and demanded to know what it wanted. The creature shrugged and claimed it wanted nothing. Eden accused it of destroying his life and manipulating everything around him, but the creature calmly denied every accusation. Finally, it explained that Eden himself was the one who kept opening the door. Every time he rejected an ending, the door opened wider. He had thought he was escaping the story, but in reality he had been inviting the audience inside.

Eden looked up. The black sky seemed to be moving. Something was pressing against the other side as though fingers were pushing against glass. Then a face appeared. It was a woman. She looked directly at him, tears in her eyes. Eden froze the moment he recognized her. It was his mother—not a false version, but the real woman from his original life. Older, tired, and familiar. The same woman who had held his hand when Aria died.

His lips parted as he whispered, ”Mom?” She smiled and answered softly. Eden stepped closer, struggling to understand how she could be there. When he asked if she was real, she laughed through her tears and admitted she no longer knew. Eden reached upward. His hand passed through the black sky until his fingertips touched hers. Warmth flowed through him, bringing back a memory of his mother sitting beside his hospital bed with her hand wrapped around his as she whispered for him to wake up.

Tears filled Eden’s eyes as he told her he remembered. She smiled and said she knew. He apologized for leaving her behind, but she gently told him that he didn’t have to be sorry. He insisted that he had died, yet she reminded him that she had stayed. When he asked how long she had waited, she simply smiled and answered that she had waited as long as she could. Her image began to fade. Eden begged her to stay, but she only told him that he had grown before laughing softly and calling him stubborn one last time. Then her fingers slipped from his, and she disappeared.

The sky returned to black. Eden remained standing there with his hand raised long after she was gone. Luna eventually stepped beside him and quietly apologized. Eden lowered his hand and admitted that he had believed the Readers were only watching them. Luna agreed that they were, but explained that his mother had been different. She hadn’t been watching—she had been remembered. That distinction finally made sense to him. The Readers existed outside the story, but memories could cross the boundary. Every person he remembered remained connected to him, and his mother had been waiting on the other side as someone who still remembered him.

Eden wiped his eyes and asked whether that meant everyone he had lost could come back. Luna shook her head and explained that remembering was not the same thing as resurrection. What he had experienced wasn’t a return. It was a goodbye. Eden nodded slowly and admitted that he hated goodbyes. Luna quietly replied that she already knew.

They stood together beneath the black sky until the little boy suddenly spoke. His eyes remained fixed on the place where Eden’s mother had disappeared as he warned that Eden should never have touched her. Confused, Eden asked why. The boy pointed upward and said that now they knew how to reach him.

The black sky cracked.

Something enormous began forcing its way through. It wasn’t a hand or a face. It was an entire body, a shape too large and too impossible to understand. It had too many limbs, too many eyes, and too many mouths. Every mouth whispered the same word.

MORE.

Eden stepped backward in horror. The boy explained that it wasn’t actually the audience. It was what happened when the audience stopped watching and decided they wanted to participate. Another portion of the creature pushed through the sky. The world shook violently. Buildings collapsed in the distance, people screamed, and the Witnesses scattered in panic. Aria grabbed Eden’s arm and urged him to run, but Luna immediately shook her head. There was nowhere left to run.

The creature’s countless eyes opened and focused entirely on Eden. The whispers stopped. Then one voice emerged from all of them at once, declaring that they wanted a character. Another voice insisted they wanted to choose. A third announced that they wanted to change the story. Finally, they all spoke together and declared that they wanted to be Eden.

The creature descended lower. Wherever its shadow passed, the world turned white. Luna grabbed Eden’s hand and warned him not to let them choose for him. Eden asked how he was supposed to stop something like that. To his surprise, Luna answered that he couldn’t. Instead, he had to give them what they wanted. When he demanded an explanation, she pointed toward the collapsing world and reminded him that they were already inside the story. The boundary had been crossed. For the first time, something from outside had entered his world.

Eden looked toward the creature and asked what would happen if they became him. Luna’s expression darkened as she insisted that they couldn’t. There was only one Eden. The creature’s many mouths opened at once and replied that there could be two.

A figure began forming beneath it.

The shape slowly took on a human appearance. Two arms. Two legs. A familiar face. Eden stared as his duplicate opened its eyes. They were completely black. The new Eden smiled and calmly announced that he thought they should talk. Eden stepped forward and demanded to know who he was. The duplicate’s smile widened as he answered that he was the version of Eden everyone wanted.

Then he looked up at the sky before turning his gaze back toward Eden. He announced that it was time to see which one they would choose.

The black sky erupted with voices. For the first time, Eden heard the Readers chanting his name. The sound echoed across the world over and over as the duplicate laughed. The earth trembled beneath them, and somewhere beyond the story, another page turned.
