Yandere Stream

Eden did not answer. Every instinct in his body told him to. The voice beyond the doorway had spoken his name with the kind of familiarity that made his skin crawl, and somewhere behind that voice was the laughter of the little boy he had only just learned to fear. The darkness beyond the door shifted as if something enormous had moved closer, but Eden remained where he was, staring into the impossible blackness.

The man beside him watched carefully and whispered that it was good. Eden glanced at him, confused, and asked what was good about any of this. The man replied that Eden had not answered the voice. Eden admitted he almost had and asked why that mattered, but the man gave no explanation. Instead, he reached for the door and slowly pushed it wider.

Eden’s stomach tightened. The darkness beyond it was not empty. It had depth, layers, and movement. Shapes drifted within it, sometimes so distant they resembled stars, sometimes close enough for Eden to make out fingers, faces, and silhouettes before they vanished again. Then he heard something else—paper. Thousands of pages turning at once. The sound came from every direction.

Eden stepped through. The moment his foot crossed the threshold, the room behind him disappeared. He found himself standing inside a corridor with no walls, at least not in any way he understood. Pages formed the floor beneath his feet. Thousands upon thousands of sheets overlapped each other and stretched endlessly into the distance. Some were blank while others contained writing, drawings, memories, and fragments of lives.

As he walked, he saw himself as a child, Luna laughing in a kitchen, Aria sleeping peacefully, and countless versions of himself dying in worlds he barely remembered. Faces he had never met stared back from the pages. Cities that had never existed unfolded beneath his feet. Then he stopped at a page that showed something different. It showed him sitting at a desk, older than he had ever been. His hair was longer, his face thinner, and his eyes looked completely empty.

Eden stared at the image and quietly said it was him. The man walked past without hesitation and confirmed it. When Eden asked what that version of him was writing, the man only said that he would find out eventually. With no better answer available, Eden followed.

As they continued down the corridor, new pages appeared every few steps. Some showed moments from his life while others displayed possibilities that had never happened. One showed him refusing Luna’s hand. Another showed him killing the faceless creature. One revealed him becoming the Second Eden. Another showed a life where he never met Aria. Some were happy, some tragic, and some impossible.

One page stopped him completely. It showed a small house. An older Luna sat peacefully on the porch while Aria stood beside her. Eden sat nearby in a chair with gray hair and a genuine smile. There were no monsters, no Readers, no endless worlds, and no cosmic horrors. It was simply a life. Three people who had survived and grown old together.

Eden reached toward the page but stopped before touching it. He asked whether it had ever been real. The man did not even turn around when he answered that it had not. Eden then asked if it could have been, and this time the answer was yes. Somehow that hurt even more. He lowered his hand and continued walking.

The farther they traveled, the fewer pages remained. Eventually the corridor grew nearly empty. A single page appeared here and there before even those vanished. At the very end stood a small wooden table. Resting on it were a pen, a single sheet of paper, and a photograph.

Eden approached slowly. It was the same photograph from before, showing him, Luna, and Aria together. This time, however, something had changed. Written in faded ink across the back were three words: We were happy once.

His throat tightened as he asked who had written it. The man remained silent until Eden demanded an answer. Finally, he turned and told him that he had written it himself. Eden immediately denied it, but the man explained that he simply did not remember. When Eden insisted on knowing more, the man revealed that the photograph had been written on the night before Aria died.

The world seemed to stop. Eden stared at him in disbelief. The man continued quietly, explaining that Aria had not been the first thing he lost. When Eden asked if he meant Luna, the answer was no. The man looked down the empty corridor and said that the first person Eden lost had been himself.

Eden admitted he did not understand. The man picked up the photograph and explained that long before Aria died, something inside Eden had already started disappearing. He had continued living his life, working, laughing, loving Luna, and caring for Aria, but part of him had already begun to break. When Eden asked why, the answer was simple. He had known none of it would last.

A cold feeling spread through him. He argued that nobody could know something like that, but the man disagreed. Everyone knew. Most people simply pretended otherwise. As Eden stared at the photograph, fragments of memory surfaced. He remembered a hospital room, machines humming softly, rain striking a window, and Luna sitting beside him with tears in her eyes.

He pressed his fingers against his temples and said he remembered the hospital. The man nodded. Eden remembered Luna crying, and again the man nodded. Then Eden remembered something else. Aria had not been there. His voice cracked as he said it. The man quietly explained that she had already been gone.

Eden’s knees weakened and he sank to the floor. The corridor fell silent around him. After a long moment, he whispered a single question and asked how. The man finally answered that this was where the story truly began. When Eden repeated the word story, the man explained that it was not the story Eden thought he knew. It had not started with creation. It had started here.

The man picked up the pen from the table and placed it in Eden’s hand. The pen felt warm, almost alive. When Eden asked what he was supposed to write, the man told him nothing. Confused, Eden asked who would write it instead. The man smiled and said that he already had.

The blank page suddenly began filling itself with ink. Words appeared one sentence at a time. I don’t want to die. Then another sentence followed. I don’t want Luna to die. Another appeared after that. I don’t want Aria to die. Finally came the sentence that made Eden’s hands shake. I don’t want to remember.

The writing continued without mercy. So I’ll make somewhere they can’t die.

Eden looked up in alarm, but the man was gone. He called out for him, yet no answer came. The corridor itself had vanished. He was back inside the room with the desk, the lamp, the chair, and the books. Everything looked the same except for one detail.

Someone was sitting in the chair.

Eden froze. The man seated there looked twenty-seven years old. He had Eden’s face, Eden’s eyes, and the same exhausted expression staring back at him. It was the original Eden. For several seconds, neither version spoke. Then the younger Eden smiled—not happily or sadly, but with the weary expression of someone who had been carrying a burden for far too long.

He quietly said that Eden had finally remembered. Eden could barely find his voice. He accused the younger version of creating everything: the worlds, the stories, and the endless versions of Luna. The younger Eden admitted to some of it, though not all. When Aria’s name entered the conversation, fear appeared in his eyes for the first time.

Eden demanded to know what he had done to her. The younger Eden answered with painful honesty. He could not save her. He had tried. He had built world after world, creating version after version, hoping one of them would be right. Every time he remembered her death, he felt as though he could no longer breathe, so he made another reality and then another. Yet every version was wrong.

Eden slowly sat down across from him. His voice softened as he asked what had happened to the real Aria. The answer contained no cosmic mystery, no hidden monster, and no prophecy. She had died. That was all.

Eden closed his eyes. Then he asked about Luna. The younger Eden admitted that she died later. Eden’s breath caught. When he asked how, the younger version said that she could not live without him. Immediately he corrected himself, admitting that it was not true. It was simply the lie he had told himself because reality had been too painful to face.

A long silence followed. Eventually the younger Eden pushed an old book across the desk. He explained that everything had been built on a single lie. When Eden asked what lie, the younger version looked directly into his eyes and answered that it was the belief that, if he had been stronger, he could have saved them.

The room became completely still. Eden stared at the book as its pages turned on their own. One by one they flipped until stopping on a final sentence.

You were never meant to save them.

His eyes burned as he read it. Then a child’s voice whispered from behind him, saying that he was not supposed to remember that yet.

Eden turned. The little boy stood in the doorway. The First Reader was no longer smiling. He looked terrified. When Eden demanded to know why, the boy stared at the younger Eden and explained that he had not told him the worst part.

The younger Eden had gone pale. Eden asked what he meant. The boy swallowed hard before revealing the truth. The younger Eden had not created the first story.

He had found it.

A deep knocking echoed beneath the floor. Once. Twice. Three times. The younger Eden whispered a warning and told him not to open it. Eden looked down and saw a door beginning to form beneath his feet.

Then a voice came from the other side.

A woman’s voice.

Soft. Familiar. Impossible.

It called his name.

His heart nearly stopped. It sounded exactly like Luna. The voice spoke again and said it had been waiting for him. Eden stared at the door while the younger Eden abruptly stood and begged him not to listen.

When Eden demanded a reason, terror filled the younger version’s face. He told him that it was not Luna.

The knocking came again. This time something scratched slowly against the other side of the wood. Then the voice laughed. In that moment, Eden realized the truth.

It was not waiting for him to open the door.

It was waiting for him to remember that he already had.
