Yandere Stream

The sentence remained suspended in the air.

NOW THE READER MUST MAKE THEIRS.

Eden stared at it. For once, there was no immediate answer, no voice explaining what it meant, and no mysterious figure stepping out of the darkness to tell him what he was supposed to do next. Just four words hung there in silence, and somehow that frightened him more than anything he’d encountered before. Luna squeezed his hand and quietly called his name. When he looked at her, she told him not to look at the page. Eden frowned and asked why. Luna glanced toward the sky before answering that the page was looking back. When he pointed out that it made no sense, she simply replied that it didn’t have to and urged him not to look.

Naturally, Eden looked anyway.

The clouds had disappeared. So had the stars. Above the world stretched a massive white surface like an enormous sheet of paper suspended across the sky. Words began appearing upon it, not written by any hand but forming on their own one line at a time. The first read, THE BOY CHOSE TO LIVE. Then another appeared: THE DAUGHTER CHOSE TO STAY. A third followed: THE MEMORY CHOSE TO REMEMBER. Finally, the last line appeared. BUT THE READER HAS NOT CHOSEN YET. Eden felt his stomach tighten as he asked who the reader was.

The stranger answered him.

The man in the black suit stood several feet away, but his face had changed. He no longer looked unfamiliar. Eden recognized him instantly as the doctor from the hospital, the one who had tried to save him and the one who had eventually pronounced him dead. Staring at him, Eden realized he had known this man all along. The doctor acknowledged that he had been there, that he had watched Eden die, and that he had known enough about what was happening. When Eden demanded to know if he was the Reader, the doctor shook his head and explained that he had only been the First Witness. Confused, Eden asked where the Reader was. The doctor looked directly at him and pointed toward the sky.

At first Eden saw nothing but the white expanse above them. Then he noticed that the words weren’t appearing randomly. They were shifting whenever he thought about them. A chill ran through him as he stepped backward. The doctor calmly explained that the Reader existed outside the story, watching everything unfold. Eden stared upward, suddenly aware of a presence beyond the world itself, something looking through the pages and observing them from the very beginning. Turning toward Luna, he asked if that presence could hear them. She nodded. He asked if it could see them. Again, she nodded. When he wondered if it could control them, Luna hesitated before admitting that it could not anymore. The doctor smiled and explained that this was the reason the story had awakened.

When Eden asked what happened next, the doctor remained silent. Instead, the boy beneath the tree answered. The child sat there with his knees pulled against his chest and calmly told Eden that they would wait. Surprised, Eden asked if he wasn’t afraid. The boy shook his head and explained that this part of the story wasn’t about him. When Eden asked who it was about, the child simply pointed toward him.

The world immediately began to change.

The house appeared first, followed by the street, the hospital, the forest, and finally the white room. Every place Eden had ever known appeared at once, overlapping like transparent photographs layered on top of each other. The hospital existed within the forest, the forest within his childhood bedroom, and his bedroom within the white room. As the locations merged together, people began appearing everywhere. Mira, Cael, Finn, Adrian, Eve, the Witnesses, and countless forgotten characters emerged from every direction. Some looked exactly as Eden remembered them, while others appeared older, younger, or completely different from any version he had known. Together they stood in silence, waiting.

Eden’s throat tightened as he looked around. Luna smiled and explained that they were all there because he had remembered them. Moments later, Mira walked toward him. Shocked, Eden could only stare as she greeted him with her usual dry humor. When she admitted she had been dead, he groaned in frustration, telling her that answer was becoming increasingly annoying. Mira laughed and pulled him into a hug. For a brief moment, none of the larger questions mattered. The story, the Reader, and the ending all faded into the background as he simply held his friend.

When they separated, Mira greeted Luna before Eden looked around for Cael. A familiar voice answered from behind him. Turning around, Eden found Cael standing there looking older but unmistakably himself. He immediately embraced him. Cael complained that he didn’t do emotional moments, though tears in his eyes betrayed him. When Eden pointed that out, Cael blamed it on allergies and jokingly claimed the cause was Eden’s face. For the first time in what felt like forever, Eden laughed without fear.

The moment didn’t last.

Every person present suddenly looked upward as the white surface covering the sky began to crack. The doctor quietly announced that it was time. Eden’s smile faded as he asked what he meant. The doctor explained that the Reader was closing the book. Silence spread through the crowd. Eden demanded to know what would happen when the book closed. The answer came without hesitation. The story would end, and everyone would disappear. Eden immediately refused. Luna stepped beside him and tried to calm him, but he shook his head. He had only just gotten everyone back.

The doctor gently corrected him. Eden hadn’t brought them back. He had remembered them. When Eden insisted that remembering should be enough to keep them alive, the doctor explained that their fate depended on the Reader’s decision. Looking upward, Eden realized that if the Reader chose to close the book, there was nothing he could do. The doctor disagreed. He reminded Eden that he always had a choice. Confused, Eden asked what choice remained. The answer was simple. He could speak to the Reader and explain why the story deserved to continue.

Eden laughed nervously at the absurdity of the idea. He didn’t know who the Reader was or how to reach them. The doctor only smiled and told him to tell the truth.

The cracks continued spreading across the sky as the world slowly faded. Luna took one of his hands while Aria took the other. Mira and Cael stood beside him. Looking at all of them, Eden finally turned his gaze upward. He admitted that he didn’t know if the Reader could hear him, but if they could, he didn’t know what he was supposed to say. The world became perfectly still as he continued. He spoke about everything the Reader had witnessed: the battles, the losses, the mistakes, and the moments of love. He talked about forgetting people, about loving someone he couldn’t save, about losing friendships because he was terrified of being left behind. He reminded the Reader that they had watched him die.

The sky remained silent.

Taking a deep breath, Eden continued. If the Reader was still there, then they already knew how the story ended. Because of that, he wasn’t going to beg. He wasn’t going to argue that these people deserved to live or insist that the story mattered on some cosmic level. Maybe they were just characters. Maybe none of it mattered at all. Yet when he thought about Luna holding his hand, Mira laughing at him, Cael standing beside him, and Aria calling him Dad, he realized something important. It had mattered to him. Every fear, every mistake, every painful moment and every happy one had mattered. Looking up at the endless white sky, he quietly thanked the Reader for letting him live it.

Then he fell silent.

For several moments, nothing happened. The sky remained blank and motionless. Eden lowered his head, believing his answer was finished. Suddenly a single word appeared above them.

CONTINUE?

Everyone stared at it. Luna whispered that the choice was his. Eden looked at her and shook his head. The choice wasn’t his at all. The words shifted across the sky.

THE READER IS ASKING YOU.

Confused, Eden looked upward as another question appeared.

DO YOU WANT TO CONTINUE?

For the first time, the story wasn’t demanding that he make an impossible sacrifice. It wasn’t asking him to choose between people. It wasn’t asking him to save the world. It was simply asking what kind of life he wanted. Eden looked around at Luna, Mira, Cael, Aria, and even the boy beneath the tree. None of them answered for him. They all remained silent.

They were leaving the choice to him.

A smile slowly spread across Eden’s face.

”Yes.”

The answer appeared across the sky in massive letters.

YES.

Immediately the world began rebuilding itself. The forest returned. The houses returned. The roads, the hospital, the sky, and the people all came back. Piece by piece, reality restored itself around them. The Reader had made a choice, and the story would continue.

Eden laughed in relief.

Then the little boy screamed.

Everyone turned at once. The child was staring at something standing behind Eden. Slowly, Eden turned around. The faceless creature stood there once again, but this time it wasn’t watching him. Its attention was fixed entirely on the sky. On the Reader. Its head tilted slightly before a mouth formed where there had never been one before.

For the first time, it smiled.

Then it spoke.

It thanked the Reader for continuing.

A chill passed through Eden as the creature turned toward him and calmly explained that one mistake had been made. Confused, Eden asked what it meant. The creature pointed upward. A new sentence appeared across the sky.

ONE READER.

Then another.

TWO READERS.

Another followed.

THREE READERS.

The numbers continued climbing. Four. Five. Ten. One hundred. Thousands. Millions.

Horror spread across Eden’s face as he realized what he was seeing. When he asked how many people were reading the story, the creature’s smile widened.

”All of them.”

At that exact moment, every person in the world turned toward Eden simultaneously. Their eyes locked onto him, and together they spoke with a single voice.

”We remember you.”

The sky instantly went black.
