Warlock Apprentice

Chapter 1439: Section 1440 Target Anchor

Watching as the silhouette of the Sky Ghost Ship moved further away until it vanished at the edge of his sight, Angel’s expression was still somewhat dazed.

He looked at his palm and could feel an energy ripple still emanating from it.

This ripple was unprecedentedly strong.

He had just casually experimented with activating an Illusion Technique using the energy from the new magic vortex to see what the effects would be. Additionally, if it could help delay the Sky Ghost Ship for a bit, then it was like killing two birds with one stone.

Angel really had the intent to delay time when he cast an Illusion Technique towards Cerberus.

It turned out that, after releasing it, Cerberus didn’t seem very resistant to Illusion Techniques, and Angel easily plunged those gigantic crimson eyes into a state of chaotic confusion.

With such ease in achieving his goal, Angel decided to further manipulate the Illusion Technique, guiding Cerberus away from the Sky Ghost Ship.

And in the end, he was indeed successful.

The energy cost was much lower than Angel had anticipated.

After his breakthrough, Angel was very clear that his power should have increased a lot. However, exactly how much it had increased remained just a conceptual idea, until he released that Illusion Technique… Even though it was a very simple Basic Illusion Technique, Angel gained a new appreciation for his own power increase and transformation.

The difference between a wizard and an apprentice seems only a thin line apart, but in terms of power, they are worlds different.

Saving the Sky Ghost Ship was just an opportunistic act for Angel who hadn’t thought too much about it. However, in Sanders’ eyes, it was a case of all gain and no loss.

It seemed like Angel had only saved the people on the Sky Ghost Ship, but in reality, this incident implicated many parties.

The Sky Ghost Ship didn’t belong solely to Wizard Ivan, nor was it just related to Silent Hill, but belonged to the entire Wizards’ Alliance of Fairy Tale Town.

Once Angel’s deed of saving the Sky Ghost Ship spread, it would count as a favor towards the whole of Fairy Tale Town.

Of course, that didn’t mean all the wizards of Fairy Tale Town owed Angel a favor.

But as long as someone acknowledged this favor, networks among witches could start developing gradually in this way.

Just like before, Wizard Ivan had acknowledged a favor from Angel. He had already intended to establish a network of friendship with Angel, and now that he owed a favor, their relationship became a few degrees warmer.

This had no downside for Angel.

…

With that matter settled, Angel, carrying a sense of emotion, left the middle realm with Sanders.

Not long after, Angel and Sanders stood near the Gate Model phenomenon suspended in the Void.

Even though it was Sanders’ second visit, the sight of those doors stretching beyond view still struck him with a subtle sense of awe.

Although each person’s Law Creation Phenomenon is unique, he had never seen such a bizarre phenomenon before.

Perhaps because these phenomena originated from Angel himself, he felt no sense of weirdness. Walking among these doors, Angel actually felt quite comfortable, as if he were a fish in water.

Angel pushed open an exquisitely patterned wooden door, then walked out from another door of the same shape.

After several experiments, Angel felt a sense of enlightenment.

These pairs of matching doors, could they correspond to the spatial displacement effect within the Gate Model? However, the special energy that formed the Gate Model effect, didn’t seem to manifest in this phenomenon.

Soon, Angel stood before the door that looked very ordinary, but in the entire world of doors, it was the most special one.

Angel observed the door quietly; compared to others, he indeed had an additional layer of understanding of it.

But understanding aside, he still didn’t understand the meaning of this door’s existence. What was the purpose of the Gift of Truth bestowing this door?

Angel fell into deep thought and stood silently for a long time, while Sanders waited quietly behind him.

After a while, Angel made a move. He stepped forward, grabbed the doorknob, and attempted to push the door open.

Sanders’ gaze followed Angel, also very curious about what secret lay behind the door. However, shortly after, doubt appeared in Sanders’ eyes.

Because Angel couldn’t open the door either.

After realizing he couldn’t open the door, Angel stepped back a few paces and observed the door with a strange look, sometimes frowning, sometimes relaxing, as if he had discovered something, but after careful consideration, he found it absurd.

After a while, seeing Angel snap out of his contemplation, Sanders asked, “What do you make of this door?”

Angel pondered for a moment, and, instead of directly answering Sanders’ question, he said, “This door, is the Gift of Truth.”

“The Gift of Truth?” Sanders’ eyes flashed with surprise and doubt. He naturally knew what the Gift of Truth was, a reward bestowed by the will of the world, and he himself had received it many times. Even knowing what the Gift of Truth meant, Sanders still found it strange. Why would it be a door?

Speaking of the Gift of Truth, most of the time what is given is a kind of idealistic self-state, it’s quite rare to have such an external reward… At least, Sanders had never heard of one.

“Mentor asked me what I thought of this door.” Angel paused, “I don’t know how to regard it because I’m very familiar with this door, but the more familiar I am, the more puzzled I become.”

“Why is that?” Sanders asked curiously.

At this moment, there was no one else in the Void, so Angel pondered for a moment, decided not to hide anything, and declared the purpose of the door.

“This door, for me, is a… coordinate? Signpost? Hmm, that doesn’t seem quite accurate,” Angel’s voice paused as if searching for the right adjective. After a while, he continued with a hesitant tone:

“Target anchor.”

Target anchor? Sanders’ brows furrowed. In literal terms, it was indeed similar to ‘coordinate,’ both denoting a location. But a coordinate is more conceptual, whereas a target anchor is a specific representation.

However, Sanders still didn’t understand. What was Angel trying to convey with this term?

“It’s just here, existing eternally.”

“Whenever I wish, I can feel its presence.”

Angel narrated quietly, “It’s like a bright lighthouse, as long as I turn back, I can see its position standing firm.”

As Angel explained, Sanders gradually understood the meaning Angel was trying to convey.

This door, in fact, could also be understood as a Spatial Beacon, but more concrete. As long as one sensed the door, one would forever know the way back, just as Angel had described. In the darkness, it was like a lighthouse shining eternally, guiding those who are lost.

It sounded quite nice, on the surface.

But looking at the actual effect, it seemed somewhat superfluous.

As Sanders understood, a Spatial Beacon could entirely replace the function of this door. No matter which world Angel would visit in the future, as long as he remembered the Spatial Beacon, he could also ensure that he would never be lost in the dark.

“Besides this, are there any other effects?”

Angel rubbed his brow and shook his head, “It doesn’t seem like there are.”

That’s why Angel had hesitated when Isabel asked him earlier. In Angel’s view, if the Gift of Truth only had this one effect, it didn’t seem quite right.

Thus, he personally came to the Void to confirm it.

The truth showed that this was indeed the only function!

At least Angel could not sense any other effects.

“You say, it exists eternally, do you mean this door will not disappear?” Sanders inquired.

Angel nodded, other phenomena of the gates were ephemeral to his perception, bound to vanish eventually. But this door, being a target anchor, was fixed in place and would not disappear.

Sanders fell silent for a moment. “Regardless, at least it saves a Spatial Beacon, and that’s… not bad.”

Sanders complimented, albeit reluctantly.

Angel shrugged his shoulders. He had thought to inform Isabel of any special effects once he understood what the door could do. But now, it seemed there were none.

When he returned, he would simply tell Isabel.

“Indeed, it saves a Spatial Beacon,” Angel replied with a sense of resignation.

Angel, not giving up, checked once more carefully, still finding nothing. It seemed that this time, the Gift of Truth was indeed underwhelming.

Angel thought it made sense; after all, there was only one Gate Model.

He had fooled the Law Creation Phenomenon twice with a single Gate Model. Overall, he didn’t come out at a loss. After all, “the way” appeared, and taking this Gift of Truth as a Spatial Beacon wasn’t a bad thing.

With this thought, Angel felt much more at peace.

Since there was nothing to find, Angel himself relaxed and decided to leave the Void, as he had just advanced and there were many tasks awaiting him.

Angel and Sanders turned to leave.

However, just as they had walked a few steps away, a throaty chuckle suddenly emanated from behind them.

“Young man, long time no see~”
