The other side of Reincarnation

The days that followed settled into a strange, wonderful new rhythm — Elaine, testing the full extent of her evolved Authority of Genesis, proposed something considerably more ambitious than simple repairs.

”I’d like to rebuild all of Horizoncrest properly,” she told Kai over breakfast, entirely serious. ”Not patch it. Rebuild it — a proper council hall, a residence worthy of the family this has actually become, infrastructure that matches what we’ve grown into.”

”You can actually do that now?” Kai asked.

”I believe so,” she said. ”Would you like a demonstration?”

Would I ever.

The demonstration, when it came, left the entire town speechless — Elaine’s own golden light spreading across Horizoncrest’s existing structures, not destroying anything, simply refining, expanding, elevating everything that already stood into something considerably grander.

A proper council hall rose at the town’s center, dignified and welcoming at once.

Beside it, a mansion took shape for the Kobayashi family specifically — not ostentatious, but warm, spacious, clearly built for a family that had grown considerably larger than any of them had originally planned for.

”This is beautiful,” Eris said, running her still-adjusting new eyesight over every detail with genuine wonder.

”You built this in an afternoon,” Kai said, still faintly disbelieving despite everything he’d already witnessed that week.

”I had excellent motivation,” Elaine said, warm.

Nyxara found Kai alone that evening, something she’d clearly been weighing settling into her expression before she finally spoke.

”Four days from now,” she said, ”the other Demon Lords are expecting you. Formally. Belial’s seat needs filling, and they’ve already agreed it’s yours.”

Right. That’s actually happening. I’m apparently a Demon Lord now, with actual Demon Lord business to attend to.

”What do I even wear to something like that?” he asked, only half-joking.

That question, unfortunately, opened a door he clearly hadn’t properly braced for.

The following morning became, without his consent, an entire household production — Eris and Elaine debating fabric choices with genuine intensity, Ivy quietly, efficiently producing options that somehow perfectly split the difference between intimidating and approachable, Nyxara offering commentary that ranged from genuinely useful to deliberately, gleefully unhelpful.

”This one,” Eris said, holding up something considerably more elaborate than anything Kai had ever willingly worn.

　”Absolutely not,” Kai said.

”This one, then,” Elaine offered, something more restrained.

”Boring,” Nyxara declared. ”You want them to remember him properly, not forget he was even in the room.”

Ace, observing the entire chaotic process with obvious delight, offered his own opinion with total confidence.

I recommend something that photographs well, should anyone eventually paint a formal portrait of this occasion.

”Nobody’s painting a portrait,” Kai said.

You don’t know that.

They eventually settled on something Ivy quietly assembled herself — simple, dark, dignified without unnecessary ornamentation, close enough to his own established style that he still felt like himself wearing it, while carrying just enough weight to properly represent whatever he’d apparently become.

”You’ll only need Ivy with you,” Nyxara told him, the night before they were set to leave. ”Given what the evolution’s actually done for her — trust me, she’s more than sufficient company for this.”

”Should I be worried about that?” Kai asked, half-joking.

”No,” Nyxara said, something genuinely proud in the assessment. ”You should be relieved. She’s become something considerably beyond what any of us properly expected, even me.”

Ivy, overhearing, said nothing — simply smiled, small and satisfied, and continued her own quiet preparations for a meeting that was, in four days’ time, about to properly announce Kai’s arrival among beings who’d ruled this world’s darker corners since long before he’d ever existed at all.

The day before the meeting, Nyxara arrived with someone new trailing quietly behind her — another sin-emarked demon, younger-looking, clearly nervous despite trying hard not to show it.

”New subordinate,” she told Kai, without much preamble. ”Also sin-emarked. I’d like you to name him, if you’re willing.”

Another one. Guess this is just how my life works now.

Kai studied the young demon a moment, who studied the floor in return, clearly uncertain what to do with the sudden attention.

　”Seli,” Kai said, finally.

The shift happened the same way it always did — aura flaring, settling, something new taking root. Not quite the same scale as Ivy’s own transformation, but real, genuine growth all the same.

”Congratulations,” Nyxara told him. ”You’re the second person Kai’s named who used to answer to me instead of himself.”

　Seli bowed deeply, still processing.

　”Thank you, Lord Kai.”

There it is again. That title. I’ve genuinely stopped fighting it at this point.

The actual preparation for the meeting turned into a full household production almost immediately, considerably more chaotic than Kai had braced for.

”Stand still,” Eris said, adjusting his collar for what felt like the fifth time in ten minutes.

　”I am standing still.”

　”You’re fidgeting.”

　”I’m existing. There’s a difference.”

Ace, watching from a comfortable perch nearby, offered his own commentary with total confidence.

You look adequately intimidating. Not overly so. A respectable middle ground.

　”Thanks, I think,” Kai said.

You’re welcome. I have excellent taste.

Enzo circled him once, critical, arms crossed.

”You’ll do. Try not to embarrass the rest of us.”

”High bar,” Kai said. ”I’ll do my best not to clear it.”

Elaine handed him a small, carefully wrapped item at the last moment — something practical, tucked discreetly into an inner pocket.

”In case you need it. Emergency supplies. You never know.”

　”What is it?”

”You’ll know if you need it,” she said, cryptic, already moving on to some other last-minute detail.

Ivy, dressed and ready considerably faster than Kai had managed, watched the whole spectacle with quiet amusement.

　”You’re nervous.”

”I’m not nervous,” Kai said. ”I’m mentally preparing.”

　”That’s the same thing.”

”It is not the same thing.”

It’s absolutely the same thing.
