The other side of Reincarnation

”Hey,” I said, once Anti-Subconsciousness had finished walking me through everything Assimilate now actually did, ”what was my own mana called again? I keep forgetting.”

”Anathema-mana,” it said, same as it had told me once before, months ago.

”Right, right,” I said, turning the word over. ”Anathema. I always forget that one. It’s a mouthful.”

It’s also a heavy word to carry, honestly.

Cursed. Denounced.

Feels like it’s doing a lot of narrative work I didn’t ask for.

”I’m changing it,” I said, decided, mostly on impulse.

”Changing it to what.”

”Null,” I said, testing the word.

”Simple. Clean. Represents the absence of mana, or the negation of it, or something along those lines. Easier to say, easier to remember, and it doesn’t come pre-loaded with somebody else’s judgment about what I am.”

”...Acceptable.”

Anti-Subconsciousness said it after a pause I couldn’t quite read.

Good.

From now on, I don’t use mana.

I wield Null.

That’s a considerably better way to put it, honestly.

”Alright,” I said, ”since we’re renaming things――tell me properly, in full, exactly how Null actually works. I’ve been operating on partial understanding this whole time. I’d rather actually know.”

”Understood.”

Something in its tone shifted, careful and deliberate in a way that told me this was going to be a longer explanation than most.

”Null is not simply a stronger form of mana,” it began. ”It is an energy that exists outside the world’s magical laws entirely. Rather than empowering the existing system, as ordinary anti-mana does at its highest tiers, it overrides that system.”

Overrides it.

Not just stronger.

Different, categorically.

”What does that actually mean, practically?” I asked.

”Four core properties,” it said.

*”First: Law Negation. Null ignores or suppresses magical laws and restrictions that would otherwise govern an interaction.

Second: Evolution Override. Rather than triggering the normal, gradual process of evolution, Null bypasses every intermediate stage entirely and directly awakens a target’s maximum attainable potential.”

That explains Eris.

That explains Ace.

That explains Elaine.

All of them skipped straight to whatever they were always capable of becoming, the moment I gave them a name.

　”Keep going,” I said.

*”Third: Conceptual Corrosion. Magic, barriers, and abilities founded on this world’s established laws become unstable when exposed to Null――this is part of why your own barrier destabilized following your growth, and part of why Sophia’s Prophecy Blade, itself a law-bound artifact, struggled against your presence more than her raw skill alone would explain.

Fourth: Adaptive Nature. Null reshapes itself, situationally, to counter whatever opposing energy it encounters.”*

So it’s not just powerful.

It’s actively hostile to the rules everything else in this world runs on.

That’s――that’s a much bigger deal than I’d been treating it as.

”And the naming thing,” I said. ”The actual mechanism. Walk me through that properly too.”

”When you name someone using Null,” it said, ”their soul is rewritten. Their evolution is no longer bound by this world’s normal system. They awaken directly at the highest state they could ever naturally achieve――not an arbitrary boost, but the genuine ceiling of what they were always capable of becoming, reached instantly rather than over however long it might otherwise have taken.”

　”So if I named, say, a goblin――”

”It would become the strongest possible goblin that could ever exist,” Anti-Subconsciousness said.

”A dragon would skip every evolutionary stage and reach the pinnacle of its species. A demon would instantly reach the highest form its own soul is capable of achieving.”

Huh.

That’s――that’s genuinely wild, put that plainly.

”There’s a limitation, though,” it continued, before I could get too carried away with the implications.

”Null cannot grant limitless power. It can only unlock a target’s absolute potential. If one individual’s maximum potential is lower than another’s, naming them will not suddenly let them surpass that other person. The ceiling is theirs, not mine to redraw.”

That’s actually reassuring, in a strange way.

This isn’t a cheat code that breaks everything.

It’s still bound by what each person actually is, underneath.

”So Eris, Elaine, Ace――they were always capable of what they became,” I said slowly.

”I didn’t create that potential. I just... unlocked the door to it early.”

”Precisely,” it said.

”You gave them a key. The room itself was already theirs.”

I sat with that a long while, turning over everything it meant――not just for the people I’d already named, but for what my own existence apparently represented to a world built on laws I could simply ignore whenever I chose to.

If Null genuinely exists outside the laws of creation itself――not just powerful within them, but actually outside them――that’s not just a threat to two paranoid True Dragons anymore.

That’s a threat to whoever actually wrote those laws in the first place.

The God of Creation.

That’s why he sees me as an error.

Not because I’m strong.

Because I’m proof his own rules aren’t actually absolute.

”An accurate conclusion,” Anti-Subconsciousness said quietly, apparently following the same thread I’d just followed myself.

Great.

Just what I needed.

One more terrifyingly large thing to add to the list of reasons the universe might eventually decide I need to be dealt with.

Guess I’d better keep getting stronger, then.

Whatever that ends up actually costing.
