The other side of Reincarnation

What follows is something I only pieced together much later, once the full shape of what had actually been happening behind the scenes finally came clear. I include it here so the reader understands exactly what was already moving against us, even during the quiet weeks that felt, at the time, like genuine peace.

Demon Lord Belial had once been an elf — a detail few beings still living remembered, given how thoroughly that original identity had been consumed by whatever transformation eventually made him what he now was.

Broken, was the word Nyxara herself would later use, when the full truth finally surfaced.

　Not broken in body.

Broken in whatever essential quality had once let him value anything beyond acquisition itself.

He’d heard Nyxara’s warning at the Hollow Table same as the other five, and had, unlike the rest, quietly decided it didn’t actually apply to him.

She said don’t lay a hand on him personally.

She never said anything about acquiring him through other means entirely.

”Find out everything about the boy,” he instructed one of his own sin-emarked subordinates, shortly after the meeting concluded. ”His strengths. His weaknesses. Anyone who might be persuaded to work against him, whether they understand what they’re actually doing or not.”

His subordinate bowed and departed without question, same unquestioning loyalty every sin-emarked demon carried toward whichever lord had marked them.

Null mana.

A power that bypasses the world’s own evolutionary laws entirely.

If I could actually absorb something like that—

The thought didn’t need finishing, even privately. Belial had built his entire existence, since the elf he’d once been finally shattered under whatever weight had broken him, around exactly this kind of hunger — acquisition, accumulation, the endless, restless certainty that whatever he currently held was never quite enough.

He found his opening in the Kingdom of Myrath’s own quiet faction of dissatisfied military commanders — beings already inclined toward hostility, needing only the smallest additional push to act on impulses they already carried.

”Your kingdom’s reputation is at stake,” his agent told them, carefully vague about who actually employed him. ”An apology to the anomaly reads as weakness. Wouldn’t a decisive strike, properly executed, restore what Ashford’s failure cost the region’s collective pride?”

Simple manipulation.

Feed existing resentment exactly the fuel it wants, and let mortal ambition do the actual work.

The dissatisfied faction needed remarkably little convincing, already primed by their own guilt-adjacent defensiveness to hear exactly the argument they wanted validated.

Belial’s plan, such as it was, required patience — a virtue he genuinely possessed, whatever else his broken nature had cost him.

Weaken the boy gradually, through repeated small conflicts that would never individually seem significant enough to trace back to any single source.

Exhaust his attention, scatter his focus, and eventually, once enough cracks had properly formed, move in personally to claim what those cracks had left vulnerable.

Nyxara believes her warning settles the matter.

She’s mistaken.

Patience settles matters considerably more reliably than any threat ever has.

He settled back into his own domain, patient and calculating, watching the pieces he’d already set in motion begin, slowly, to move — assassins dispatched from Myrath’s dissatisfied faction, rumors seeded through channels considerably less traceable than open diplomacy, every thread carefully arranged never to point directly back toward its actual source.

Let the boy face challenge after challenge.

Let him wear himself thin, believing each threat unconnected to the last.

By the time he understands the actual shape of what’s been happening, it will already be too late to matter.

The first assassins were already on their way toward Horizoncrest’s borders before Kai had any reason at all to suspect a single unified hand was quietly arranging every piece of what was about to test him.
