The other side of Reincarnation

The first few hours after the teleportation passed in a blur of practical, exhausting necessity — Elaine directing Horizoncrest’s own resources toward the sudden, overwhelming influx of refugees, Vance and the dwarves already assessing what construction would actually be required, Ivy quietly and efficiently organizing what little order could be found in the chaos.

Thousands of people. All at once. All frightened, all confused, all suddenly dependent on a place they’d been raised to fear as an enemy’s domain.

I found Elaine near the makeshift shelter area she’d already begun organizing, tents and temporary structures rising with the same practiced efficiency she’d brought to Horizoncrest’s own original construction.

”We need proper shelter,” I told her. ”As much as we can manage, as fast as we can manage it. Use elven creation magic wherever it’ll stretch furthest.”

”Already underway,” she said. ”Though I’ll be honest — this is beyond anything I’ve organized before. The scale alone is considerably more than our usual capacity.”

I know. I know it is. Doesn’t mean we get to stop trying, though.

I found Enzo later that same evening, standing alone near Horizoncrest’s edge, watching the chaos of thousands of frightened strangers finding whatever temporary comfort could be offered them.

”You did that for me,” I said quietly, settling beside him.

”I did,” he confirmed, no shame in the admission at all.

”Thank you,” I said, honest. ”For defending me. For not letting what he said stand unanswered.”

I mean that. Genuinely. Nobody’s ever gone that far to defend me before, not even Doran or Fenrik, not at that scale.

”But,” I continued, quieter now, ”you didn’t have to erase an entire kingdom to prove that point. There were thousands of people in that kingdom who never insulted me. Never chose their king’s war. Never had any say in any of this at all.”

Enzo was quiet for a long moment, something conflicted finally crossing his usually composed features.

”I lost control of the scale,” he admitted at last. ”I intended to end the army. The attack simply — grew beyond what I fully anticipated once it actually began.”

That’s an honest answer, at least. Doesn’t undo what happened, but I appreciate him not pretending it was entirely deliberate.

”I need you to understand something,” I said carefully, choosing my words properly. ”The rest of the world’s already watching us, deciding whether we’re something to fear or something to trust. What happened today — however justified the provocation — is going to make that decision considerably harder for anyone inclined toward trust.”

”They called you a monster before this,” Enzo said quietly. ”This simply confirms what they already suspected, to people already inclined toward that fear.”

”Maybe,” I said. ”Doesn’t mean I want to actually become what they’re afraid of, though. I built this place to protect people who had nowhere else safe to go. Not to prove I could erase a kingdom because someone insulted me through a proxy.”

He nodded slowly, something genuinely weighing behind his expression.

”I understand. For what it’s worth — I don’t regret defending you. I do regret the scale. That distinction matters to me, even if it’s difficult to properly express.”

Fair. I think that’s honestly the most human response I could ask for, from someone who just did something that inhuman.

I spent the following days moving through the refugee camp properly, listening more than speaking, understanding the actual shape of what I’d suddenly become responsible for — farmers, merchants, craftspeople, children too young to understand why their entire world had simply vanished around them.

This isn’t just a crisis to manage. These are people. Real people, with real lives that got erased through no fault of their own, who now need something considerably more than temporary shelter and confused explanations.

I found myself, more than once, thinking of my own parents — Ashley’s sacrifice, Daniel’s quiet steadiness, everything they’d built out of loss and difficult choices neither of them had fully chosen for themselves either.

What would you do, in this position? I think — I think you’d probably say the same thing I keep circling back to myself. Take care of them properly. Don’t just survive this. Actually earn whatever trust they’re eventually willing to offer.

Aeron found me that evening, watching the camp settle into its own uneasy first night of temporary peace.

”You’re troubled,” he observed, settling beside me with his usual measured patience.

”I don’t know how to actually fix this,” I admitted. ”Shelter, food — that’s temporary. These people lost their entire kingdom. I can’t just hand them a tent and call the debt paid.”

”No,” Aeron agreed. ”You can’t. But you can decide, properly, what you’re actually willing to offer beyond the temporary. That decision matters more than you might currently believe.”

What am I actually willing to offer, though? What could possibly be enough for something this significant?

I sat with that question for a long while, the answer slowly, unexpectedly, starting to take shape.
