The other side of Reincarnation

”You really don’t know how any of this works, do you,” Ivy said, watching me stare blankly at a formal diplomatic correspondence from the dwarven strongholds, considerably more confused by its careful, layered courtesy than I’d ever been by a current battlefield.

”I really don’t,” I admitted. ”I know how to fight. I know how to build a home for people who need one. Actual diplomacy—reading between lines, understanding what a kingdom actually means when it says something diplomatically vague—that’s not a skill I’ve ever needed before.”

”Then let’s fix that,” she said, settling in across from me with the same brisk efficiency she brought to everything. ”Politics isn’t so different from war, really. Just fought with words instead of blades, and won through patience instead of strength.”

Alright. Let’s see if I’m any better at this than I currently feel.

Anti-Subconsciousness offered, brief as ever, though something in the offer felt, despite its terseness, genuinely invested.

Between the two of them, over the following weeks, I actually began understanding the shape of what I’d been missing entirely—how a dwarven stronghold’s formal correspondence carried real weight beneath its careful phrasing, how an elven remnant’s cautious hope needed to be met with patience rather than eager overcommitment, how every kingdom currently debating my existence was, in its own way, waiting to see what I’d actually do next before fully deciding how to respond.

”You’re better at this than you give yourself credit for,” Ivy told me after I’d successfully navigated an actual negotiation with a dwarven trade envoy without accidentally causing offense. ”You listen. Most rulers don’t actually bother with that particular skill.”

High praise, from someone who’s apparently spent considerably longer studying exactly this kind of thing than I have.

I formalized proper relations with Borga’s own extended dwarven network first, given how much trust had already been built through her people’s own genuine happiness at Horizoncrest—trade agreements, mutual defense understanding, the kind of concrete partnership that didn’t require flowery diplomatic language to actually mean something real.

The elven remnants took longer, more cautious given their own history of loss, but Aeron’s own quiet advocacy—a respected elder, personally vouching for what Horizoncrest had actually become—eased that particular negotiation considerably.

”They trust your father’s judgment,” I told Elaine once the formal agreement had finally been reached. ”More than they trust mine, probably, given how much longer he’s actually lived.”

”That’s not a weakness,” Elaine said. ”That’s just how trust properly works. Earned slowly, extended carefully. You’ll get there too, eventually.”

Nyxara’s own territory presented a considerably stranger diplomatic challenge—not fear, not caution, simply casual, genuine curiosity about whatever Horizoncrest actually was, filtered through a demon lord’s own particular sense of what mattered.

”She wants a current formal relationship?” I asked Ivy, genuinely surprised, reading through the correspondence that had apparently arrived through channels I hadn’t even known Horizoncrest maintained.

”She wants an excuse to visit more often without it seeming excessive,” Ivy said, dry. ”Formal relations simply provide the framework. I’d recommend accepting. Refusing her isn’t a genuinely available option, practically speaking, and accepting at least gives us some structure around whatever she actually decides to do.”

Fair point. Better a formal relationship with structure than an informal one where she just shows up whenever she pleases.

I sat with the growing stack of formal agreements, treaties, and careful diplomatic correspondence one evening, feeling genuinely proud of how far I’d actually come from the boy who’d once had no idea what any of this even properly meant.

A year ago, I barely understood how to run a household.

Now I’m apparently learning to run something considerably closer to an actual nation.

”You’re doing well,” Ivy told me, watching me work through the latest round of correspondence with considerably more confidence than I’d started with. ”Better than most rulers manage, honestly, given how quickly you’ve had to learn.”

”Couldn’t have done it without you,” I said, honestly. ”Or Anti-Subconsciousness. Feels like I keep needing help for every new thing this life throws at me.”

”That’s not a weakness either,” she said, echoing Elaine’s earlier sentiment. ”That’s simply what having people worth trusting actually looks like.”

Yeah.

I think I’m finally starting to properly believe that, rather than just accepting it as something people tell me.
