The other side of Reincarnation

It was Aeron who noticed first — a subtle wrongness in the air at Horizoncrest’s edge, the kind of thing only someone who’d lived within the barrier’s presence for years would think to question at all.

”Kai,” he said, finding me near the training grounds. ”Something’s different about the barrier. I can’t properly explain what, only that it no longer feels the way it used to.”

That’s not good. That’s really not good.

I went to check it myself, reaching out the same way I always did, feeling along Absolute Sanctuary’s familiar structure — and found something considerably less steady than I’d expected.

A flicker, faint but unmistakable, like a candle guttering in wind it shouldn’t have been exposed to at all.

”Assessment,” Anti-Subconsciousness said, careful. ”Your mana core has expanded significantly since the assimilation of the archdemon. The barrier’s original structure was calibrated to a capacity you no longer operate within. The mismatch is causing instability.”

My own growth broke my own barrier.

That’s — that’s genuinely ironic, in the worst possible way.

”Can you fix it?” I asked, already half-dreading the answer.

”Not immediately,” it said. ”The event that caused this — I would designate it the Anathema Overflow — has disrupted the barrier’s foundational resonance. Recalibration is possible, but requires time, and considerable care, given the scale of what changed.”

How long?

”Uncertain. Weeks, at minimum. Possibly longer.”

I sat with that a long moment, the full weight of it settling in slowly.

The barrier’s down.

Or at least unreliable.

Which means Horizoncrest isn’t hidden anymore. Not properly, not the way it’s been for years.

I gathered everyone that evening, same as I had for every piece of hard news since the war began, and told them plainly.

”The barrier’s compromised,” I said. ”Not gone entirely, but unstable enough that I wouldn’t trust it to hide us properly anymore. However this happened — my own growth outpacing what it was originally built to handle — it means the rest of the world’s going to start noticing we exist. Properly, this time. Not just rumor and distorted reports.”

”How long until it’s fixed?” Elaine asked, already thinking through the practical implications.

”Weeks, at least,” I said. ”Maybe longer.”

”Then we prepare for visibility,” Aeron said, steady as ever. ”We’ve weathered worse than being seen. We’ll weather this too.”

Nobody in that room asked the question I’d been quietly turning over myself, all evening, though I suspect most of them were thinking it.

If the rest of the world can find us now — if scouts, merchants, other kingdoms start noticing exactly where Horizoncrest actually sits — does that mean Vahlreth and Skorne finally will too?

I hadn’t heard a single word from either of them since the mountain, all those years ago.

No sign, no scout, no hint that they even remembered I existed, despite everything that had happened since — Roshan, the guild, the growing reputation, now an entire war with a kingdom.

Why haven’t you come.

What are you actually waiting for.

”I do not have an answer for that question,” Anti-Subconsciousness said, quiet, apparently reading the shape of my thoughts even without me voicing them properly.

Yeah. Ignivar didn’t either, last time I asked.

Guess it’s just one more thing I’m going to have to sit with, unanswered, for a while longer.

We spent the following days adjusting to the new reality as best we could — Elaine’s defense force stepping up patrols along the domain’s now-unreliable edges, Vance throwing herself into the barrier’s recalibration with the same obsessive focus she brought to everything academically fascinating, Aeron’s council quietly preparing contingencies for a world that could, potentially, show up at our doorstep with far less warning than we’d ever had before.

We survived the war.

We won it, even, more thoroughly than I let myself believe was possible going in.

And now, the actual cost of that survival is finally starting to show itself.

I stood at the barrier’s edge one evening, watching its faint, unreliable shimmer flicker in and out of proper focus, and understood, with quiet, settling certainty, that whatever came next was going to happen in full view of a world that had, until very recently, barely known Horizoncrest existed at all.

Let them look, then.

Let the whole world finally see what we actually built here.

I think, for the first time, I’m not actually afraid of being seen.
