The other side of Reincarnation

Ignivar’s training grew more intense over the following weeks.

　Not less.

Every session pushed me harder than the last, though I noticed, more than once, a distracted quality to his usual focus that told me his mind was still working through the question he hadn’t yet brought himself to fully ask.

”You’re holding back on something,” I told him one evening, after a session that had left me considerably more bruised than usual despite his apparent distraction.

”I am.”

He admitted it without hesitation, settling onto his usual log as he weighed his next words with unusual care.

”I’ve been a dragon for longer than most beings in this world have properly lived.”

”My identity has always been built around that fact—what I am, what I gave up, what remained afterward.”

”And naming would change that.”

”Considerably,” he said.

　His gaze lowered slightly.

”I don’t know what I’d actually become.”

”That uncertainty is—harder to sit with than I expected, given how much certainty I’ve built my life around since leaving my old bloodline behind.”

Fair.

That’s a genuinely significant thing to risk, even for someone who’s already proven willing to walk away from an entire identity once before.

”You don’t have to decide today,” I told him.

”Or this month.”

”Whenever you’re actually ready. If you’re ever ready at all.”

”I know.”

He was quiet for a moment.

”I appreciate that patience, more than I’ve properly said.”

Something settled behind his usual composure.

”May I ask you something, honestly?”

”Always.”

”Does it hurt?”

　Ignivar’s voice was quieter now.

”Watching everyone else transform, growing stronger through a gift you gave them freely, while you yourself keep training the slow, difficult way?”

”Does some part of you resent that disparity?”

Huh.

Didn’t expect that question, honestly.

”No,” I said, after actually considering it properly rather than answering reflexively.

”Their growth doesn’t take anything from mine.”

”If anything, naming them makes me stronger too. That’s just how the mechanic works, apparently.”

”Every person I’ve helped become more of what they already were has, in some strange way, helped me become more of what I am too.”

”That’s a generous way to frame it.”

”It’s an honest way to frame it,” I corrected.

”I don’t measure my own worth against how fast everyone else grows.”

”I measure it against whether the people I love are actually safe. Actually thriving.”

”Everything else is just details.”

He considered that for a long while.

Something shifted behind his expression that I couldn’t quite read.

”I think...”

He finally spoke, slow and deliberate.

”I’m ready to ask you properly, then.”

There it is.

Finally.

”Ask,” I said quietly, giving him the space to actually say it.

”I would like a name.”

Ignivar’s voice became formal in a way I hadn’t heard from him since our very first meeting, all those months ago, when he’d been testing whether I was worth the risk of approaching.

”Freely offered, if you’re willing to give it.”

”Not because I doubt what I already am.”

　He paused.

”Because I’ve watched everyone else here become more of themselves through your gift.”

”And I find myself, finally, curious what more of myself might actually look like.”

This is a big deal.

Bigger than any naming I’ve done so far, given who’s actually asking.

”You’re certain?”

I wanted to be sure, given everything he’d just admitted about the uncertainty involved.

”I am.”

This time, there was no hesitation.

”Whatever it costs. Whatever it changes.”

”I trust you enough, at this point, to accept it freely.”

I studied him for a long moment.

The same careful weighing I brought to every name.

Yet the particular weight of this one settled differently than any of the others had.

He’s given me months of his life.

His teaching.

His patience.

His own hard-won wisdom about restraint and growth.

Whatever I give him back, it needs to actually honor that.

”Alright,” I said, finally.

”Let’s do this properly, then.”

”Not rushed.”

”Tomorrow morning, at first light.”

”I want it to actually mean something, the way it deserves to.”

　Ignivar nodded.

Something like genuine relief crossed his features.

　The decision was made.

　Finally.

　After weeks of quiet deliberation.

”Tomorrow, then,” he said.

Tomorrow.

One more name, about to change everything.

Same as it always seems to around here.
