The other side of Reincarnation

Pieced together later, from the fragments of diplomatic correspondence and court gossip that eventually reached us — how the wider world actually deliberated over what Horizoncrest, and I, actually represented to them.

The Kingdom of Verath convened its own council within weeks of Ashford’s defeat becoming common knowledge, the debate splitting cleanly along a line that would, I later learned, repeat itself in council chambers across half the continent.

”An anomaly capable of breaking an entire army,” one Verathi minister argued, ”is not something any sensible kingdom treats as a potential friend. Ashford’s mistake wasn’t caution. It was insufficient force.”

”Ashford’s mistake,” another countered, sharper, ”was manufactured aggression, built on a lie planted by something that turned out not to be human at all. We’d do well not to repeat their exact error simply because their conclusion happened to align with our own fears.”

Two ways of reading the same story, apparently.

Depends entirely on what you’re already inclined to believe about power like mine.

The Kingdom of Myrath’s own deliberations carried a different weight entirely — guilt, mostly, tangled with genuine fear, given how directly their own careless spellwork had contributed to Horizoncrest’s population.

”We displaced an entire dwarven settlement,” one Myrathi noble reportedly argued, ”and that settlement is now under this anomaly’s direct protection. If he holds any grudge over that history, we’re considerably more exposed than most of our neighbors.”

”Then perhaps,” another suggested, quieter, ”the wiser path is reconciliation, not confrontation. An apology costs considerably less than another failed war.”

That’s actually a reasonable read, from Myrath specifically.

Wonder if it’ll actually translate into anything.

Not every voice in that particular kingdom agreed, though — a faction within Myrath’s own military command apparently viewed any acknowledgment of wrongdoing as unacceptable weakness, and began, quietly, exploring options considerably less diplomatic than an apology.

The scattered elven remnants, still processing the news that an entire displaced elven population had found genuine belonging rather than mere refuge, leaned overwhelmingly toward cautious hope — envoys dispatched, not to negotiate from fear, but to actually understand what Horizoncrest had become.

The dwarven strongholds, similarly, sent their own quiet inquiries, Borga’s own glowing reports having already done considerable work smoothing whatever wariness might otherwise have colored their approach.

Good.

Let the actual truth keep outrunning the fear-shaped version, wherever it can.

I sat with all of this, piece by piece, understanding, properly, for the first time, exactly how much my own existence had become a genuine subject of continental debate — not just a rumor, not just a distant curiosity, but something entire kingdoms were actively deciding how to position themselves toward.

I never asked for any of this.

Didn’t want to be a political question mark for half the continent.

But here we are, apparently, whether I asked for it or not.

Anti-Subconsciousness said, brief, its newer terse register still something I hadn’t fully adjusted to.

Yeah. I figured as much myself.

I looked out over Horizoncrest’s growing skyline, the town continuing to expand despite everything still circling beyond its borders, and understood, with quiet, settling certainty, that whatever came next was going to require considerably more diplomacy than I’d ever properly prepared myself for.

Guess it’s time I actually learned how politics works, instead of just reacting to it as it happens to me.
