The other side of Reincarnation

The following evening, Horizoncrest’s leadership gathered properly, the grief of the previous day still raw but folded now into cold, focused preparation.

”Belial already knows you’re coming,” Ivy reported. ”He’s preparing to move against Horizoncrest itself—but I believe that’s a distraction. His actual objective remains you, specifically.”

”Give me an updated map,” Kai said, and Ivy produced one instantly, already prepared, as though she’d known exactly what he’d ask before he’d finished asking it.

She really does think of everything, he thought, not for the first time.

Belial’s domain sat north, bordering a forest called the Lost Echo, beyond which lay the Kingdom of Liogard.

”Let me handle him,” Nyxara offered, not for the first time either.

”Not happening,” Kai said. ”He’s mine to deal with.”

　She rolled her eyes, exaggerated.

”Who’s sulking now.”

Eris, curled against Kai’s side, fast asleep through most of the actual planning, stirred faintly but didn’t wake—a small, quiet moment of normalcy amid everything else the evening carried.

They settled the plan properly by its end:

Eris, Elaine, and at least a hundred of Horizoncrest’s own elite forces would face Belial’s army directly.

Ivy and Ace would accompany Kai—their actual target was Belial himself, not his soldiers.

Enzo would remain behind to guard Horizoncrest.

”And me?” Nyxara asked.

”You’re welcome to come,” Kai said, ”if you promise not to interfere.”

”You’re such a buzzkill,” she said, sighing dramatically. ”Fine. Fine. I promise.”

”Good.”

The next morning, Horizoncrest’s forces gathered, ready to move.

”Don’t leave a single one of his soldiers standing,” Kai told them, quiet, final.

”I don’t intend to,” Elaine said.

Eris activated the teleportation spell, and the full assembled force—Elaine, the hundred elite fighters, everyone bound for the coming battle against Belial’s army—vanished from Horizoncrest’s gate in an instant, appearing directly in front of the advancing enemy lines.

Back at Horizoncrest, Kai turned to the three still with him.

”Ivy. Ace. Nyxara. Ready?”

”Ready,” they confirmed, together.

Anti-Subconsciousness located Belial’s own castle with total precision, and the spell activated a moment later, carrying the four of them directly to its front gate.

Ivy didn’t bother with the door.

A single motion, and it fell apart into pieces, like it had never been solid at all.

They walked directly toward the chamber where Belial waited, unhurried, entirely composed.

”Welcome,” he said, as they entered. ”I see you brought some friends along.”

”So you’re Demon Lord Belial,” Kai said.

”I am.”

”Hey, Nyxara,” Belial added, casual. ”How’s it going?”

”Speak to me again,” she said, flat, ”and I’ll end you.”

He laughed, genuinely amused, and turned his attention to Ivy.

”Interesting. You’re not a normal demon, are you?”

”A pleasure to meet you, Demon Lord Belial,” she said, composed. ”My name is Ivy. And no—I’m not ordinary.”

Belial’s two subordinates, Ruu and Ritte, both shifted slightly, something uneasy crossing their expressions.

”You’ve been given a name,” Belial said, something delighted in the observation. ”How very interesting.”

All the more reason I need to absorb him, he thought, privately.

”Can I ask you something?” Kai said.

”Go ahead.”

He wanted the confirmation directly, from Belial’s own mouth, rather than secondhand.

”Is it true you used King Rathbon to provoke Enzo into wiping out fifteen thousand soldiers and an entire kingdom, knowing full well Enzo wasn’t me?”

Kai’s expression had already started losing whatever calm it had carried in.

”Yes,” Belial said, entirely unbothered. ”The king was already spoiling for a war. I simply pushed the button.

”I wanted to see what you were made of.

”Worth it, honestly—I heard you rebuilt the entire kingdom afterward. That’s not something you see every day.”

”One more question,” Kai said. ”You sent two subordinates into Horizoncrest to gather information about me?”

”Yes.”

”Were you aware of the people they killed doing it?”

”Yes,” Belial said, simple. ”Why does that matter? Their lives weren’t worth anything.”

A blade—dwarf-forged, freshly made, fused entirely with Null—materialized in Kai’s hand.

His eyes shifted to purple, aura bleeding faintly from his own body.

Ace stood ready at his side.

Ivy watched with quiet, proud satisfaction.

Nyxara floated lazily in the air nearby, already anticipating the show.

”Good,” Kai said, flat, final. ”Now I’m certain I have to kill you.”

Belial rose from his throne, his own blade appearing in hand.

”It’s good we feel the same way.”

The instant the clash began, Nyxara snapped her fingers.

The world shifted around all of them, reality folding into the Lost World Arena—the realm she’d built specifically so nothing of value would be destroyed by whatever was about to happen.

Ace and Ivy were pulled in alongside Kai, Ruu and Ritte and six more of Belial’s followers scattering into position around them.

Ace turned to face the six.

Ivy squared off against Ruu and Ritte both.

Kai and Belial stood alone, facing each other properly, for the first time.

Nyxara settled down cross-legged in the air above it all, swinging her feet idly, entirely ready to enjoy the show.

The moment the teleportation spell resolved, Eris felt the full weight of Belial’s army arrayed before them—thirteen hundred soldiers, disciplined, confident, clearly expecting an easy victory against whatever Horizoncrest had actually sent.

They have no idea what’s actually standing in front of them.

”Formation,” Elaine called, and the hundred elite fighters fell into place instantly, the same drilled precision they’d carried through Ashford’s own defeat now settling into something considerably sharper, considerably more lethal.

Belial’s soldiers didn’t wait for further posturing.

Their own front line surged forward, confident in numbers that had, historically, been more than sufficient to overwhelm anything short of a proper army.

　They weren’t fighting an army.

They were fighting people Kai had personally named.

Eris moved first, her own blade meeting the charging front line with total, unhesitating precision—three fell before the rest had properly registered she’d engaged at all, her Null-forged edge unmaking flesh and armor with equal, indifferent efficiency.

Aeron’s sons. Doran. Fenrik. Everyone this world’s already taken from.

Not today.

Not one more.

She fought with something considerably sharper than her usual controlled discipline—grief given proper direction, every strike carrying the accumulated weight of everything Belial’s own scheming had already cost the family she’d built her whole life around protecting.

Elva, Celica, and Luke carved through the enemy’s flanking attempts with coordinated, ruthless efficiency, their months of drilling finally meeting a test that actually demanded everything they’d trained for.

”They’re not slowing,” Luke called, blade already slick, voice tight with focused adrenaline rather than fear.

”Good,” Celica said. ”Means they haven’t figured out yet what they’re actually up against.”

Elaine held the center, her own Authority of Genesis lending a strange, terrible grace to every motion—not creation turned toward destruction exactly, but something adjacent to it, the same precise control that had once rebuilt an entire kingdom now unmaking an army with equal, patient exactness.

I don’t take joy in this, she thought, watching another line of soldiers fall before her.

But I won’t apologize for it either.

Not after what they were sent here to do.

The hundred elite fighters moved as a single, coordinated force, exactly as they’d drilled—no wasted motion, no unnecessary cruelty, simply overwhelming, absolute competence meeting an enemy that had never once faced anything like it.

Belial’s soldiers began breaking within the hour, their earlier confidence collapsing into open, desperate panic as their own numbers proved meaningless against opponents who simply didn’t lose ground.

Kai said don’t leave any of them standing, Elaine thought, grim, watching the battle’s shape settle firmly in their favor.

I intend to honor that.

Whatever it costs, however it reads to the rest of the world watching this unfold.

Eris fought on, methodical, precise, the grief that had carried her into the fight slowly settling into something quieter, more controlled, as the battle’s outcome became increasingly, inevitably clear.

This is for the elf girl who died because she wouldn’t talk.

This is for the boy who threw himself in front of a friend he barely knew, because it was the right thing to do.

She didn’t stop until the field itself had gone quiet.

Thirteen hundred soldiers reduced to considerably less than that, Horizoncrest’s own forces standing largely unmarked amid the wreckage of an army that had genuinely never stood a chance.
