The other side of Reincarnation

The second attempt came three weeks later.

It was considerably more elaborate than the first—a poisoned trade shipment routed through Corla’s own network that would have reached Horizoncrest’s kitchens directly if Ivy’s careful auditing hadn’t caught the discrepancy first.

”The manifest doesn’t match the actual contents,” she told me, spreading the paperwork across her desk with the same meticulous precision she brought to everything. ”Someone altered the shipping records after Corla’s own inspection, which means whoever’s responsible has access considerably closer to our supply chain than a random outside threat should have.”

Closer than outside.

That’s—that’s a genuinely unsettling escalation.

”Could be someone within Corla’s own operation,” Elaine suggested, grim. ”Bribed, or coerced, without her knowledge.”

”Possible,” Ivy said. ”I’d like permission to investigate personally, if you’re willing. This is precisely the kind of thread I’m suited to pulling.”

I gave her that permission gladly, watching her disappear into Horizoncrest’s growing trade network with the same quiet efficiency she brought to everything.

Meanwhile, the rest of us turned our attention toward the wider pattern still assembling itself, piece by uncomfortable piece.

”Two attempts,” Eris said that evening, the leadership circle gathered again around the same table that had held these exact conversations before. ”Different methods. Same underlying patience. Whoever’s doing this isn’t rushing toward an obvious confrontation.”

”Which suggests genuine strategic thinking,” Enzo added. ”Not simple regional hostility. Something considerably more deliberate.”

Someone playing a long game.

Someone who understands that wearing me down slowly is safer than facing me directly.

Vance, quiet through most of the discussion, finally spoke up.

There was something thoughtful in her expression.

”Might I offer an outside perspective? Purely academic, given I have no particular expertise in these matters otherwise.”

”Go ahead,” I said.

”This pattern—patient, indirect, carefully deniable—doesn’t read like mortal strategy to me,” she said. ”It reads like something considerably older. Something that’s had centuries to learn exactly how impatience gets beings like us killed.”

Huh.

That’s—that’s an unsettling thought, actually, given everything I’ve already learned about the scale of things that exist in this world.

”You think this connects to something beyond Myrath,” I said slowly.

”I think it’s worth considering,” Vance said, careful. ”I don’t have proof either way. Just an instinct, worth naming out loud rather than keeping to myself.”

I sat with that thought for a long while after the meeting broke, turning it over against everything I’d already learned.

Nyxara’s warning at the Hollow Table.

The other Demon Lords’ varied reactions.

The specific mention that at least some of them might not fully respect her claim over me.

What if this isn’t Myrath acting alone?

What if someone with considerably more patience and power decided Nyxara’s warning was a suggestion rather than a rule?

”That possibility has occurred to me as well,” Anti-Subconsciousness said, brief and careful. ”Insufficient data to confirm. Recommend continued investigation before drawing conclusions.”

Fair.

Don’t want to jump to accusations without proof.

Still. Worth keeping in mind, going forward.

Ivy’s investigation into the shipping discrepancy took the better part of a week, thorough and patient in exactly the way I’d come to expect from her.

”I found the altered link in the chain,” she told me, finally, something grim in her satisfaction. ”A minor clerk, several steps removed from Corla herself, paid considerably more than his usual work would justify. He didn’t know who employed him—the payment came through an intermediary, same as everything else about this pattern.”

Another dead end that isn’t quite a dead end.

Someone’s being very, very careful about staying hidden.

”We’ll keep pulling the thread,” I told her. ”Eventually it has to lead somewhere real.”

”It will,” Ivy said, certain. ”Patient as they’re being, patience works both directions. I don’t tire easily, Master Kai. Whoever’s doing this will eventually make a mistake I can actually trace.”

Good.

Glad to have someone with her particular skills on this.

Whatever’s actually happening here, we’ll figure it out.

Together, same as everything else.
