The other side of Reincarnation

King Rathbon rode forward himself, flanked by a handful of his own generals, expression carrying none of the uncertainty his army’s stunned silence might have suggested.

Good sign, maybe, Enzo thought, watching the king approach. He’s willing to actually hear this.

”You wish to speak with me,” Rathbon said, once he’d closed the distance, something imperious in even that simple acknowledgment. ”Here I am. Speak.”

”Return your forces to Myrath,” Enzo said, direct, giving the message exactly the weight Kai had asked him to deliver. ”Lord Kai doesn’t wish for this war. You’ve been manipulated into marching against Horizoncrest for reasons that have nothing to do with your own kingdom’s actual interests.”

Rathbon’s expression shifted through several stages of disbelief before settling into something considerably uglier.

”Kai has the right to give me orders now?” he said, incredulous. ”And I’ve been used, you claim?”

　He laughed, short and derisive.

”Where is this Kai you speak of, then? Too cowardly to face me himself?”

”Lord Kai is occupied with other matters,” Enzo said, steady despite the obvious provocation. ”He is not present.”

”And he calls himself a ruler,” Rathbon said, something venomous entering his tone. ”A ruler who can’t even lead his own army into the field.”

One of his generals, emboldened by his king’s obvious contempt, added his own commentary.

”A disgrace of a ruler.”

The soldiers behind them laughed, the sound rippling outward across the assembled army with cruel, casual ease.

Here it comes, Enzo thought, bracing himself as Rathbon’s expression shifted into something considerably beyond mere contempt.

”You stand before me, worm,” the king said, voice rising, carrying easily across the fifteen thousand soldiers behind him, ”in the skin of a man — but I smell the beast beneath. You reek of sulfur and submission. Is this what your master sends? A lizard wearing a face, begging on its knees for mercy it doesn’t deserve?”

”Kai,” he continued, contempt dripping from every syllable. ”Even the name is a joke. A gutter-rat’s grunt. I know what he is — what you are. A half-dragon, half-demon mongrel too deformed to show his true face to the world. Too weak to walk among civilized men without hiding behind walls and sending his leashed animals to do his whimpering.”

He’s not stopping. He genuinely believes every word of this.

”I’ve ended bloodlines older than his pitiful existence,” Rathbon continued, something rehearsed and cruel in the delivery, like a speech he’d practiced privately for exactly this occasion. ”I’ve burned cities for sport. And you — you pet — you dare lecture me on manipulation? On war?”

”Your master is the disease,” he said, voice climbing toward something genuinely unhinged. ”A bastard that should have been drowned at birth. A stain on creation that the gods themselves regret permitting.”

Enzo’s expression had not changed throughout any of this.

His stillness, however, had begun to carry a considerably different quality than simple patience.

”When I march on Horizoncrest,” Rathbon continued, oblivious or uncaring, ”I won’t negotiate. I won’t spare. I’ll mount his severed head on the gates of my capital, and I’ll let my subjects piss on his skull until the bone turns white.”

He turned his full attention on Enzo, something almost gleeful in his cruelty now.

”And you — his faithful, pathetic hound — you’ll watch. You’ll watch, and you’ll whine, and you’ll die knowing that everything you loved was built on a lie called Kai, and that lie ends with me.”

The soldiers behind him roared their approval, fifteen thousand voices rising in a wave of confident, cruel enthusiasm.

He genuinely believes he’s already won this, Enzo thought, something cold and absolute settling into place beneath his own composed silence. He has no idea what he actually just started.

Rathbon, apparently satisfied with his own performance, raised a hand toward his own casters.

”Attack,” he ordered, entirely unbothered by the earlier failure, confident his army’s sheer numbers would eventually simply overwhelm whatever defense had stopped his opening volley.

The explosive spellwork came again, aimed directly at Enzo himself this time, a concentrated barrage meant to end the conversation permanently.

　None of it landed.

None of it even came close.

Enzo simply stood there, entirely unmoved, the explosions dissipating harmlessly around him as though the air itself had decided his presence was not something worth allowing violence to reach.

”Your nation brags about being the most powerful with the highest explosive spellwork,” Enzo said, voice carrying easily across the sudden, uncertain silence that followed. ”You were wrong.”

Something shifted in his own voice then — flat, cold, carrying none of his earlier measured patience.

”And now,” he said, ”let me show you what true explosion actually feels like.”
