It was around this same stretch of quiet, uncertain weeks that Sophia finally came to me with her own decision.

　Fully formed.

Resolve settled into her expression in a way I hadn’t seen since she’d first woken in Horizoncrest.

”I’m ready,” she said, simple.

”To go back. To tell the truth, whatever it costs me.”

She’s actually doing it.

Walking back into an institution that might not want to hear what she’s carrying.

”You don’t have to,” I told her, one final time.

I made sure the offer was genuinely understood rather than simply extended out of politeness.

”You could stay. Build something here instead.”

”I know.”

Sophia lowered her gaze for a moment before looking back at me.

”I’ve thought about it, more than you probably realize.”

”But my people deserve the truth about Cassmoor. About the war. About everything that’s happened since.”

”I’d rather be the one who tells them properly than let whatever distorted version already reached them stand unchallenged.”

Same reasoning Elaine gave me, once, about honesty mattering even when it’s inconvenient.

Guess that’s a value this whole place has quietly built itself around.

”What will you actually tell them?” I asked.

”Everything.”

There was no hesitation in her answer.

”Cassmoor’s true nature. What I witnessed here—the town, the people, the complete absence of anything resembling the threat I was sent to neutralize.”

”My own defeat, honestly reported. Same as every account I’ve ever given.”

”That’s going to be a hard story for some people to accept,” I said.

”Most true stories are.”

　Sophia’s expression remained calm.

”Doesn’t make them less necessary to tell.”

I studied her for a long moment.

Genuine respect slowly settled into something I hadn’t expected to feel this strongly for someone who’d once tried to kill me on principle alone.

”Horizoncrest will always have a place for you,” I told her.

”If things go badly.”

”Whatever ’badly’ actually looks like, once you’re back there.”

”I appreciate that.”

Something warm briefly crossed her usually composed features.

”More than I think I’ve properly said since waking up here.”

◆

We saw her off two days later.

The whole of Horizoncrest’s leadership gathered at the barrier’s now-unreliable edge to mark her departure properly.

　Eris.

　Elaine.

　Aeron.

　Ivy.

Even Vance had paused her latest research to offer a proper farewell.

”Thank you,” Sophia told each of them in turn.

Her words carried a genuine warmth that felt considerably different from the formal courtesy she’d first arrived with.

”For showing me something my own institution never properly explained.”

”I don’t know what I’ll find when I return.”

　She paused.

”I know, at least, that I’m returning with clearer eyes than I left with.”

”Send word,” I told her.

”Whatever happens. Good or bad.”

”I’d rather know than wonder.”

”I will.”

She promised it with the same steady honesty she’d carried through everything since that first battlefield.

　Then she turned.

　And walked away.

I watched her until she was well out of sight, something bittersweet settling in my chest that I hadn’t fully expected.

Started as an enemy.

Might end as something considerably more complicated than that, depending on what she actually finds waiting for her.

For a while, I simply stood there.

　Then—

”Her testimony carries genuine risk for her personally.”

　Anti-Subconsciousness spoke briefly.

Its newer, terser register was still something I hadn’t fully adjusted to.

”Institutions rarely reward inconvenient honesty.”

Yeah.

I know.

I hope she’s stronger than whatever pushback she’s about to face, though.

I genuinely believe she is.

I finally turned back toward Horizoncrest.

Toward Ivy, still settling into her new place among us.

Toward Ignivar, still quietly weighing a question he hadn’t fully decided how to ask yet.

Toward whatever the wider world was still deciding about a place that had, against every reasonable expectation, become genuinely worth defending.

One piece of this whole tangled situation, walking home to face her own institution’s judgment.

Whatever happens next, at least it happens with the truth finally in play.

Rather than whatever comfortable lie kept the war going in the first place.
