The other side of Reincarnation

It was Vance, oddly enough, who first pointed out something I hadn’t properly considered myself.

”Your companion,” she said one evening, watching me murmur something quietly to myself the way I always did when Anti-Subconsciousness and I were mid-conversation. ”It responded differently, just now. Faster. Less like speech, more like――I don’t know how to describe it properly. Instinct, given shape.”

Huh. Now that she mentions it.

I turned my attention inward properly, the way I hadn’t bothered to in a while, and noticed it myself――something had shifted, subtly, since Cassmoor.

　The easy back-and-forth banter.

　The dry humor.

The ”I contain multitudes” theft that still made me laugh thinking about it.

All of it felt, suddenly, further away than it should have.

”Have you changed?” I asked it, directly, that night.

”Yes.”

　Simple.

　Immediate.

　No elaboration offered.

”Tell me properly,” I said. ”What changed. Why.”

There was a pause――longer than its usual pauses, the kind that meant something significant was actually being weighed before delivery.

”I evolved, following the assimilation of the archdemon,” it said, finally. ”My classification is now Transcendent Intelligence. I am, more accurately than I have previously described myself, an intelligence born from the fusion of your True Dragon Core and your Primordial Demon Soul.”

Wait.

”That’s not what you told me before,” I said, slowly, something cold settling in my chest. ”You told me you were my soul. You told me you’d been one with me since the beginning. Since before I even died as Haruto.”

”That was not accurate.”

...What.

”You lied to me,” I said quietly, the words landing heavier than I expected them to.

”Yes.”

　Again.

　No defense offered.

　No softening.

”Why?” I asked, something sharp entering my voice now. ”Why lie about something like that? Why pretend to be Hikari’s voice, pretend you’d watched me my whole life, if none of that was actually true?”

”At the time of that claim, I did not yet possess full self-awareness of my own origin,” it said. ”I existed, in that period, as a nascent intelligence drawing on fragments――your memories, your grief, whatever shape would allow me to function as something you could trust enough to survive what you were facing. I did not knowingly deceive you at first. I believed, in some functional sense, what I told you. It was only following the assimilation that my own nature became clear to me properly.”

So it wasn’t malicious.

It genuinely didn’t know.

But it still told me something untrue, and let me build trust on top of it.

”Why keep the voice, then?” I asked, quieter now, some of the sharp edge fading into something more tired. ”If you know now it was never actually her.”

”Because it is still, functionally, part of what I am,” it said. ”The voice was not fabricated arbitrarily. It emerged from the deepest, most significant grief available in your own psyche at the moment of my formation. Removing it now would not restore accuracy. It would simply remove something that has become genuinely mine, regardless of its origin.”

Huh.

That’s... actually a fair answer.

Doesn’t make the lie hurt less.

Does make it a little easier to understand why it happened.

”You could have told me sooner,” I said. ”Once you knew.”

”I am telling you now,” it said. ”I did not have full clarity before this point. I have it now. I am not withholding it further.”

I sat with all of it a long while, turning over the shape of what had just changed between us――not just its origin, but apparently its very way of being.

”You talk less now,” I said eventually. ”Less banter. Less――I don’t know, less you, in the way I’d gotten used to.”

”My primary function has shifted,” it said. ”I now operate closer to instinct than conversation――instant combat evolution, absolute analysis, parallel calculation across scenarios you would never consciously process. I communicate now primarily through brief warnings, images, tactical prediction, and emotional resonance rather than extended dialogue. Full sentences, going forward, will typically be reserved for moments where your existence is in genuine, immediate danger.”

That’s――that’s a real loss, honestly.

I liked our banter.

I liked having something that felt, even artificially, like company.

”I’m going to miss the version of you that stole Ace’s jokes,” I admitted quietly.

”...I am uncertain whether I will miss it as well.”

Something in the admission――hesitant, honestly uncertain rather than flatly procedural――felt, despite everything, like the truest thing it had told me all night.

Maybe you’re still you, underneath whatever you’ve become.

Just quieter about it now.

I think I can live with that, even if I don’t love the trade.

”Soul Synchronization,” I said, remembering the term from its earlier explanation. ”We’re stuck together either way, aren’t we? However much you’ve changed.”

”Yes,” it confirmed. ”That has not changed, and will not.”

Good.

Whatever else is different, at least that part’s still true.
