The other side of Reincarnation

The fighting’s actual end came almost anticlimactically.

The last resistance simply crumbled once Belial’s soldiers finally understood—properly, completely—exactly how thoroughly outmatched their entire assault had been from the very first exchange.

Eris stood amid the aftermath, breathing hard, her blade lowered.

The grief that had carried her through the battle was finally settling into something exhausted rather than sharp.

”Casualties?” she asked quietly, dreading the answer despite everything.

”Minor,” Elva reported, relief evident beneath her own visible exhaustion. ”A handful of wounds. Nobody lost.”

Good.

Good, that’s good.

Whatever else this cost, at least it didn’t cost us that.

Elaine moved among the fallen enemy with careful, methodical attention, ensuring nothing of Belial’s own force remained capable of continuing the assault, exactly as Kai had asked.

”They never had a chance,” Luke said, something subdued in his own reflection as he watched the scale of the aftermath settle properly into his understanding. ”Thirteen hundred soldiers. We barely broke a sweat, comparatively.”

”That’s not something to celebrate,” Celica said quietly. ”Just something to understand properly. They were sent here by someone who never gave them an honest chance either.”

Fair.

This isn’t a victory worth celebrating loudly.

Just one worth being grateful we survived to grieve properly, once it’s actually over.

Eris felt, distantly, something shift in the world around them.

　A presence.

　Vast and unmistakable.

It settled into place somewhere she couldn’t fully locate.

Kai.

That’s Kai’s aura, isn’t it?

Something’s happening, wherever he actually is right now.

”Something’s happening,” she said aloud, her voice suddenly urgent. ”I can feel it. Something significant.”

Elaine, sensing it too, went very still.

　”The fight with Belial.”

”We can’t help him,” Eris said, frustration and helplessness creeping into her voice in a way she genuinely hated. ”We’re not part of that battle. Whatever’s happening, it’s happening somewhere we can’t reach.”

Please.

Please be okay.

Please let this actually end the way it needs to.

They gathered the wounded, secured the field, and began the slow, careful process of confirming the battle’s actual outcome.

　Belial’s forces were genuinely broken.

The immediate threat to Horizoncrest had been properly neutralized.

Even so, the larger—and far more significant—confrontation continued somewhere entirely beyond their reach.

”We did our part,” Elaine said finally, settling beside Eris as the last of the cleanup concluded. ”Whatever’s happening with Kai now—that’s his fight, same as this was ours.”

　”I know,” Eris said quietly.

　She lowered her gaze.

”Doesn’t make the waiting any easier.”

Come back.

Please, just come back.

Same as I’ve asked every single time you’ve walked into something I couldn’t follow you into.

They began the journey back toward Horizoncrest.

　Victorious...

　But subdued.

The actual weight of the day’s cost settled properly into all of them—not the battle they’d just survived, but the one still unfolding somewhere beyond their reach.

The one that actually mattered most of all.

　Meanwhile...

　Nyxara’s snap didn’t discriminate.

When she pulled Kai and Belial into her arena, she pulled everyone in the castle’s vicinity with them—including two sin-emarked demons who had simply been following their master, and one Demon Lord who had come along because her own king had gone somewhere.

Ivy materialized ten meters from Ruu and Ritte.

Her eyes immediately recognized the markings on their flesh.

The same crimson brands she’d once carried herself.

Sigils of gluttony carved into sin-emarked skin.

　She smiled.

　Not hostile.

　Almost fond.

Ruu snarled, the brands glowing with active hunger.

Ritte circled left without a word, flanking on pure instinct.

Neither of them recognized what Ivy actually was.

They sensed demon in her, but the quality read wrong.

　Too clean.

　Too complete.

A polished gem where they’d only ever known rough stone.

”Another stray?” Ruu asked, gluttony manifesting as black drool along his jaw. ”Kai’s pet project?”

”No,” Ivy said, settling into a casual stance, like a teacher rolling up her sleeves before a demonstration.

　”I’m something else entirely.”

　They attacked together.

Hunger drove their movements with precision.

Ruu lunged straight ahead, gluttony jaws erupting from his forearms.

Ritte struck low, her brands uncoiling into consuming whips.

Ivy wasn’t there for either strike.

She stepped into the gap between their convergence, redirecting Ruu’s momentum into Ritte’s own path.

Their attacks collided, sending both of them stumbling back in confused, snarling recoil.

”Your center is wrong,” she said conversationally, tapping Ruu’s shoulder hard enough to send him stumbling three meters.

”You lead with hunger, not body. Hunger is predictable. Body is not.”

　Ritte recovered first.

She lashed in with a pattern meant to envelop.

　Ivy simply walked through it.

Her form shifted by mere millimeters, the whips passing through spaces she’d already vacated.

She caught Ritte’s wrist mid-swing and twisted gently.

The whip cracked against Ruu’s rising guard.

”You telegraph with your eyes,” she told Ritte, almost disappointed. ”Every strike, you look where you’re going to hit. A child could read you.”

　Ruu roared.

Gluttony manifested in its purest form—a sphere of devouring force that pulled everything within two meters toward annihilation.

　Ritte mirrored him.

　Their hungers resonated.

　Then multiplied.

Ivy stood in the center of it.

　She sighed.

　And moved.

　Not to escape.

　But through.

She found the harmonic frequency of their combined gluttony the same way she had once practiced it herself.

　Her palm met Ruu’s chest.

　She pushed rather than struck.

　His own sphere destabilized...

　And devoured itself.

　They rose.

　Attacked again.

　Again.

　And again.

Each time, Ivy taught rather than punished.

Corrections were offered patiently, almost casually, as though they were children learning arithmetic rather than warriors fighting for their lives.

It happened during the seventh exchange.

　Ruu was bleeding.

　Frustrated.

　His pride had been shredded.

　Finally, he spat something ugly.

”When Demon Belial kills your precious Kai, I’m going to eat what’s left. Slowly. Maybe I’ll start with his—”

　Ivy stopped.

　Not froze.

Stopped existing as a participant in the lesson.

　The patient teacher vanished.

Something else looked out through her eyes.

”What,” she said softly, ”did you say about my precious Lord Kai?”

Ruu saw her clearly for the first time.

Not the demon who had been playing with them.

　The lord underneath.

The name Kai had given her.

　The evolution she’d skipped entirely.

Ritte, desperate, lashed out with everything she had.

　A suicide strike.

　Retreat was already impossible.

　Ivy caught the whip bare-handed.

The gluttony that devoured matter and meaning died against her palm, consumed by something hungrier still.

”I was going to let you live,” Ivy said.

　Not to Ritte specifically.

But to the concept of them both.

”Teach you. Show you what you could become, if you stopped being animals.”

　Her fingers closed.

　The whip shattered.

”But you spoke his name with filth in your mouth.”

　She didn’t assume a stance.

She simply activated Null Meridian—the evolution Kai’s naming had unlocked.

　It manifested not as light.

　Not as aura.

　But as pure erasure.

A perfect circle expanded from her feet.

　It ate the obsidian glass.

　The Lost World’s frozen twilight.

Even the very concept of Ruu and Ritte’s continued existence within its boundary.

　Not destroying.

　Removing from the equation entirely.

Ruu’s gluttony, in its purest form, met the circle...

　And simply wasn’t.

　Ritte tried to run.

She made it three meters before the circle passed through her.

　No fall.

　No blood.

Simply irrelevance to reality’s own mathematics.

Ruu lasted half a second longer.

　Every sin-mark burned at once.

For one brief moment, he almost touched evolution’s next stage through desperate defiance.

　It didn’t matter.

　His brands faded.

　Not destroyed.

　Forgotten.

His name became noise without a referent.

　”You...” he whispered.

And didn’t know what he’d meant to say.

The concept of speech was already leaving him.

　The circle completed.

　Ruu and Ritte simply weren’t.

　No bodies.

　No dust.

No evidence they’d ever existed at all.

Meanwhile, Ace faced the remaining six of Belial’s followers.

He had none of Ivy’s patience.

He simply gathered Null energy within his jaws...

　And released it directly.

　A beam erupted forward.

It unmade regeneration along with everything else.

All six were ended before any of them fully understood what they were actually facing.

Ivy exhaled once the circle receded.

Satisfied rather than deactivated, she looked down at her hands.

　Hands that had guided.

　Corrected.

And finally ended two lives without a trace of trembling.

Nyxara’s laughter carried across the Lost World’s broken geometry.

”Efficient. I wondered when you’d stop playing.”

　Ivy didn’t answer.

She turned toward where she felt Kai.

　Null calling to Null.

　And walked.

Behind her, smooth, unmarked obsidian remained.

They chose insult instead of lesson.

I chose Erasure instead of patience.

The equation balances.
