The other side of Reincarnation

Horizoncrest took a while to properly settle after Nyxara’s visit.

Not because of any lasting damage.

But because of the simple, unshakable understanding that something considerably larger than any of us had walked through our home, played casually with its strongest fighter, and left just as easily as it had arrived.

”I keep replaying it.”

　Eris admitted that evening.

The two of us sat together near the training grounds where the whole encounter had happened.

”You, actually trying.”

”Genuinely trying everything Ignivar’s taught you.”

”And she caught your first strike with two fingers.”

”Humbling doesn’t really cover it.”

　I answered honestly.

”I don’t think I’ve ever felt that outmatched.”

”Not even against Vahlreth and Skorne.”

”In my imagination, I haven’t pictured a gap quite that wide.”

She wasn’t even trying properly either.

I think that’s the part that actually keeps me up at night.

――

Ivy, for her part, settled into Horizoncrest with a quiet, watchful efficiency.

In some ways, she reminded me of Elaine’s own early days among us.

　Careful.

　Competent.

Still working out exactly where she fit into a structure she’d never expected to belong to at all.

”You don’t have to prove anything.”

I told her one evening after catching her alone, meticulously organizing a section of the town’s growing trade records without having been asked.

”I know.”

She didn’t look up from her work.

”I choose to anyway.”

”Same reason I choose to call you Master, even when you’ve asked me not to.”

”That’s not really an answer.”

”It’s the only one I have.”

　She finally glanced up.

There was something genuinely thoughtful in her expression.

”I spent longer than I care to count as something marked rather than named.”

”Property, functionally.”

”However politely Nyxara treated me within that role.”

Her fingers paused briefly over the records.

”You gave me a name.”

”Freely.”

”Without asking anything in return.”

　She held my gaze.

”I don’t know how to properly explain what that means to someone who’s never had it taken from them in the first place.”

Fair.

More than fair.

I think I understand that particular gratitude better than most people would, honestly.

――

Elaine took to Ivy’s arrival with practical, efficient curiosity.

The two of them fell into an easy working relationship within days.

Ivy’s centuries of demon-realm administrative experience meshed surprisingly well with Elaine’s own careful management of Horizoncrest’s growing trade network.

”She’s better at negotiation than anyone I’ve trained myself.”

　Elaine told me one afternoon.

There was genuine respect in her assessment.

”Understands leverage instinctively, in a way that took me considerable practice to properly develop.”

”High praise.”

　I said.

”Accurate praise.”

　Elaine corrected.

The rhythm of the words caught my attention immediately.

Almost exactly the cadence Anti-Subconsciousness used to favor before everything about it changed.

――

I noticed Ignivar watching all of this with an unusual quietness.

More thoughtful than his typical, unhurried calm.

Something was clearly turning over behind his usual composure in the days following Nyxara’s visit.

”You’ve been quiet.”

I told him one training morning.

I’d caught the specific weight behind his silence.

”I’ve been considering something.”

He admitted, settling into his usual stance despite the admission.

”Watching you name people...”

”Watching what it actually does.”

”Eris.”

”Ace.”

”Elaine.”

”Now Ivy.”

”All of them transformed into something greater than what they started as.”

”And?”

　I asked.

”And I find myself curious.”

He was careful with the next words.

”What it might do for someone who already stands considerably higher than most of them did to begin with.”

Wait.

Is he actually asking what I think he’s asking?

”Are you asking me to name you?”

　I said it slowly.

　Genuinely surprised.

”Not yet.”

　His answer came quickly.

Something almost embarrassed crossed his usually composed features.

”Simply considering it.”

”I’ve spent decades believing my own potential already fully realized.”

He looked toward the training grounds.

”Watching you prove that assumption wrong, repeatedly, for everyone else around me...”

”It’s difficult not to wonder.”

”Whenever you’re ready.”

　I answered carefully.

”No pressure either way.”

”I’d rather you actually want it, freely, than feel like you owe it to anyone.”

”Including yourself.”

　He nodded.

　Something thoughtful settled over him.

Then we resumed the morning’s training.

The question remained open between us.

　Unhurried.

Exactly the way most things worth deciding properly tended to be handled around Horizoncrest by then.

Whatever he decides.

Whenever he decides it—

I think it’s going to matter.

Considerably.

Once it actually happens.
