The other side of Reincarnation

Ivy found me at the gravestone, same place she’d learned to look first whenever she needed to deliver something that couldn’t wait for a more convenient moment.

”I have it,” she said, quiet, careful in the particular way she got when she knew the news wasn’t going to land easily. ”The full trail. Confirmed, not speculated.”

Finally.

　”Tell me,” I said.

”The assassins, the altered shipment, every piece of it traces back through the same layered chain of intermediaries,” she said. ”All of it ultimately funded and directed by the Kingdom of Myrath’s dissatisfied military faction. Confirmed, this time, not just suspected.”

Myrath. Alright. That much I’d already half-expected.

”That’s not all,” she continued, and something in her voice sharpened. ”The faction itself was manipulated into acting. Someone fed them the initial suggestion, funded their early efforts, kept the entire operation deniable enough that Myrath’s own leadership likely has no idea their military’s been weaponized this way.”

”Who,” I said, flat, already feeling something cold settle into place beneath my ribs.

　”Demon Lord Belial,” Ivy said.

I didn’t say anything for a long moment, the name settling into place alongside everything else I’d learned since that meeting at the Hollow Table — Nyxara’s warning, her claim over me, the explicit agreement every demon lord present had apparently made not to interfere.

He heard the warning. Same as the rest of them. And decided it simply didn’t apply to him.

　”You’re certain,” I said, quiet.

”Certain,” Ivy confirmed. ”The payment chain, the timing, the method — all of it matches patterns consistent with his known operations. I wouldn’t bring this to you without confidence in the source.”

Something in my chest went very still — not the loud, roaring anger I might have expected, but something considerably quieter, colder, more absolute.

Two kingdoms’ worth of lives already spent on this. Doran. Fenrik. An entire war with Ashford, built on a lie. And now Myrath, manipulated the same way, by someone who heard a direct warning and decided his own greed mattered more than it.

I stood, slow, deliberate, something settling into my expression that I felt more than saw.

”Master Kai?” Ivy said, careful, watching whatever had shifted in me.

”I’m not angry,” I said, and meant it, my own voice coming out flat and quiet in a way that felt, somehow, considerably more final than anger ever could have been.

”You don’t hate them,” Ivy said, slow, reading something correctly in the stillness.

”No,” I said. ”I don’t hate either of them. Hate would mean I still see them as something worth feeling anything about.”

I looked out over Horizoncrest — the town, the family, everything built from loss and second chances that someone’s careless, patient greed had apparently decided was simply an obstacle to remove for personal gain.

Myrath, I can forgive, eventually, maybe. They were manipulated, same as Ashford was. Belial, though.

”Belial made a mistake,” I said, quiet, final.

　”He should have come himself.”

Ivy said nothing to that, simply watching, the same careful, evaluating attention she brought to everything significant.

”Instead,” I continued, ”he sent knives in the dark and poison in the food, and hid behind a kingdom’s own desperation to keep his hands clean. That’s not strategy. That’s cowardice, dressed up as patience.”

Whatever comes next — however this actually resolves — I’m done letting this stay quiet, deniable, unaccounted for.

”Gather everyone,” I said, finally. ”It’s time we actually talked about what happens next.”
