Entertainment Creator System: Building an Anime Empire

Chapter 43: Chapter 43: The Offer He Should Have Refused

The email arrived at 6:42 AM. Haruki almost deleted it — the sender was unfamiliar, and the subject line was worse.

Business Opportunity

That combination usually meant trouble. Or spam. Frequently both. Still half-awake, he opened it anyway, then immediately sat upright.

The message came from a small digital content company — not famous, not powerful. Real. Somehow that alone made it more dangerous than if it had been an obvious scam.

The proposal was simple. Too simple. A short-term contract — creative assistance, story consultation, remote work, flexible schedule, monthly payment. Enough money to solve most of his immediate problems in one clean stroke.

He reread the number. Twice. Then a third time. The amount exceeded what he’d expected, significantly, and for several moments he just stared at it. Three months of financial pressure — gone, just like that, evaporating off the spreadsheet the moment he pictured signing.

The catch appeared near the bottom. Naturally. There was always a catch waiting somewhere below the number that made everything look easy. The company expected weekly participation — meetings, review sessions, creative consulting, content support. Approximately twenty hours a week.

Twenty. The number lingered longer than he expected it to. Twenty hours wasn’t a part-time job. Not really. Twenty hours was a second life running parallel to the one he already had, and he didn’t have a lot of spare hours left over to give it.

He leaned back. The apartment felt unusually quiet. The bank spreadsheet sat open beside the email, three months of runway staring back at him, and the system’s warning from the night before came back to mind — Financial stability declining. A solution had appeared out of nowhere. A very tempting one.

His phone buzzed. Takeda. He answered immediately, for once.

”You’re awake.”

”Unfortunately.”

Takeda laughed, then caught something in his voice. ”What happened?”

The explanation took less than two minutes. When he finished, silence followed — a worrying one.

”Don’t do it.”

The answer arrived instantly, and he blinked. ”That fast?”

”Yes.”

The confidence sounded suspicious. ”What if it’s legitimate?”

”It probably is.”

”Then why?”

Takeda sighed, the kind reserved specifically for stubborn friends. ”Because you’re asking the wrong question.”

Haruki frowned. ”What question should I ask?”

”Why did they contact you?”

The apartment went quiet. Very quiet, because he genuinely didn’t know. The email never actually explained that part, not clearly, not in any way that survived a second read. The call ended soon after, no solution emerging out of it, only more questions than he’d started with.

At noon, another message arrived — Mizuno this time. The timing felt increasingly suspicious the longer the day went on. He explained the offer, and she asked for the company name. Five minutes later she called, which alone answered part of what he’d been wondering.

”Mizuno-san?”

”Don’t sign anything.” The response arrived before any greeting, a bad sign, an extremely bad one.

He sat straighter. ”What happened?”

A pause. ”I know them.” His stomach tightened immediately. ”They recruit struggling creators.”

The phrasing bothered him a lot. Not creators. Struggling creators. The distinction felt deliberate, chosen carefully rather than said in passing. He heard papers moving on her end, and then: ”They aren’t scammers.” Relief arrived, briefly, then vanished, because she clearly wasn’t finished. ”They buy time.”

The sentence confused him. ”What?”

”Creator time,” she said, instantly, professionally, coldly. ”They hire promising creators for consulting work.” A pause. ”Many never recover their momentum afterward.”

The room went silent. He looked at the contract again, and the amount suddenly seemed different — less generous, more calculated, like a number chosen to be exactly persuasive enough rather than exactly fair.

”Do you know what your most valuable asset is right now?” she asked.

The question felt dangerous. ”Reader trust?”

”Close.” Another pause. ”Momentum.”

The word landed heavily, because Chapter Ten had finally generated real momentum. The type that was difficult to build and easy to lose the second you looked away from it for twenty hours a week.

The call ran twenty minutes and ended not because the issue was resolved, but because Mizuno needed to get to another meeting. The industry apparently never slept, and neither, lately, did he.

The afternoon disappeared beneath the weight of the decision. He reviewed the contract repeatedly, over and over, trying to find the angle that would make the choice obvious. The money solved immediate problems. The time commitment created new ones. Neither side of it felt imaginary or exaggerated, which was exactly what made the whole thing so difficult to just decide on.

At four, another notification appeared — not a person, the system, the black-edged hidden quest interface again.

[Hidden Quest Update: The First Knife]

New Observation: External Opportunity Detected Threat Probability: Unknown Recommendation: Investigate motivation behind timing. Question: Why now?

The window vanished, leaving only the question behind. Why now? Why after the controversy? Why after the support program rejection? Why after the financial decline had already started making him vulnerable to exactly this kind of offer? For the first time, Haruki stopped evaluating the offer itself and started evaluating the timing around it instead, and the difference changed everything about how the whole email suddenly read.

At seven, Yui arrived. She listened quietly while he explained, then looked at the contract, then at him, then back at the contract. A simple process, and somehow terrifying to watch.

”What?” he finally asked.

She folded her arms, thinking, then: ”If this arrived six months ago, would you accept?”

The answer came instantly. ”No.”

”Why?”

”Because I’d be focused on the manga.”

She nodded once, slowly. ”So why is the answer different now?”

The apartment went quiet again. Another question, another uncomfortable one he didn’t have a clean answer for yet. She left shortly after — no advice, no instructions, just the question sitting there in the middle of the room after she’d gone.

That night, Haruki sat alone beneath the glow of his monitor. The contract remained open. The bank spreadsheet remained open. Chapter Twelve’s outline remained open beside both of them. Three futures sitting on the same screen at once, side by side. Security. Risk. Creation.

For the first time since becoming a creator, the greatest threat wasn’t failure. It was compromise — a slow, reasonable-sounding redirection of everything he’d built so far toward something that would still technically keep the lights on. Because failure hurt, sharply, and then was over. Compromise just quietly changed direction, one twenty-hour week at a time, and direction decided everything eventually, whether or not you noticed it happening while it was happening.

Somewhere beyond the apartment walls, someone had placed a very attractive obstacle directly in his path. The hidden quest called it an opportunity. The editor called it a trap. The bank account called it salvation.

Haruki honestly didn’t know which of them was right.

And that uncertainty frightened him more than any forum war ever had.
