Chapter 11: Chapter 11: The Ranking Above Him

Haruki expected Chapter Three to begin smoothly. It did not.

The first problem arrived before breakfast. He opened the platform dashboard expecting the usual quiet uptick in readers; instead, a red notification sat beside his series title.

[New Creator Ranking Updated]

He clicked it. A list filled the screen — dozens of new web manga titles competing in the same discovery category. His own series, Threadless Gate, sat at rank twenty-nine. That should have pleased him. Two days ago he hadn’t ranked at all; now he was visible.

Then his eyes moved up the list. Rank one belonged to a series called Blade Campus Rebellion.

His own readers had reached 231. The gap wasn’t large. It was ridiculous — the top series had more readers than he had page views across every Chapter combined. For the first time since publishing, excitement gave way to pressure. Someone else was winning the same battlefield.

A blue screen opened beside the dashboard.

[Competitive Environment Detected]

Current Category Rank: 29 Nearest Comparable Rival: Blade Campus Rebellion Performance Gap: Severe Recommendation: Study, do not imitate.

Haruki rubbed his face. ”I preferred when my opponent was a blank page.”

The system didn’t answer. The dashboard refreshed, and his rank dropped to thirty — another series had passed him. The small movement annoyed him more than he wanted to admit.

A message arrived from Takeda: Bro. You ranked. Also you’re getting crushed.

Haruki leaned back and stared at the ceiling. ”Wonderful.”

A second message followed: The number one series has a fight scene in Chapter one. Yours has atmosphere and sadness. Web readers like punching.

Thank you for reducing literature to punching, he typed back.

You’re welcome. Add punching.

He almost laughed. Almost — then he looked at the dashboard again and stopped smiling. The gap was real. His story had promise, but promise didn’t guarantee attention. On the internet readers could leave in seconds, and a stronger hook, a faster payoff, a flashier premise, a louder title could pull them away just as easily.

He opened the first Chapter of Blade Campus Rebellion. The art was rougher than his, the dialogue louder, the setup anything but subtle — but the first page had a rooftop fight, a betrayal, and a protagonist bleeding while smiling. By page three, he understood why readers stayed. The story moved fast, too fast for his taste, but it moved with confidence. He closed it after ten pages — not out of jealousy, but discomfort. Because part of it worked.

Yui called just before noon.

”Takeda sent me the ranking.”

”Of course he did.”

”He also said you need punching.”

”I hate that he has influence.”

She laughed, but only briefly. ”Are you okay?”

Haruki looked at his notes for Chapter Three. The planned opening was quiet — Ren would go home, process what he’d seen, and slowly examine the first clue from the gate. Reasonable. Maybe too reasonable. ”I think my story might be slow.”

She didn’t rush to reassure him — one of the reasons he trusted her. ”Slow in a bad way?”

”I don’t know.”

”Then find out.” When he frowned at that, she added, ”Yes, that’s my advice. Don’t panic and change everything because another story is doing well. But don’t ignore the ranking either.” She glanced, in her way, at Blade Campus Rebellion sitting comfortably at number one. ”Your story doesn’t need to become theirs. It needs to become a stronger version of itself.”

Better advice than he expected. Annoyingly better.

After the call, Haruki opened his Chapter Three outline and crossed out the first scene. Ren wouldn’t simply go home — too passive. Instead he’d return from the gate carrying something he wasn’t supposed to have: a black thread only he could see. A dangerous object. A visible consequence. A reason for someone to come after him.

The scene changed immediately. Ren staggered out of the hidden gate beneath the city, hiding the black thread under his sleeve while strangers on the train started noticing their own destiny threads bending toward him. It preserved the mystery while adding real movement.

He began sketching. For three hours he worked without checking analytics. When he finally did, the ranking had shifted again — Threadless Gate had fallen to thirty-two. His stomach tightened.

A new comment sat under Chapter Two: Good story, but I hope something actually happens soon.

That one hurt — not because it was cruel, but because it matched his own fear exactly. He copied it into his notes and wrote beneath it: Chapter Three must create danger.

A new system notification appeared.

[Optional Mission Issued: Respond to Competitive Pressure Without Abandoning Core Identity]

Objective: Publish Chapter Three with improved tension and protagonist agency. Success Condition: Reader retention increases by 15% within 48 hours. Reward: Creator Points +150 Unlock: Retention Heatmap Failure Condition: Retention drops below current average. Penalty: No reward. Ranking decline likely.

He read it twice. This was the first mission that felt like an actual fight — not against the system, not against himself, but against the market, other creators, reader attention itself.

He accepted.

Evening arrived before he noticed the time. Page One of Chapter Three now opened with Ren in a train carriage, his hand clenched around the black thread while every passenger’s destiny trembled toward him like iron filings drawn to a magnet. A woman across from him stared — not at his face, at his sleeve. The final panel showed her whispering into a phone: ”I found someone without a future.”

Haruki sat back. His shoulders ached, his coffee had gone cold, but the page worked. For the first time, his story had a pursuer. A threat. A reason for readers to keep going beyond simple curiosity.

His phone buzzed again. Takeda: Still alive?

He checked the ranking board — thirty-three now — then looked at the new first page. Yes. Also no punching yet.

Coward, Takeda replied.

Haruki smiled despite the pressure. It didn’t erase the problem — his rival was still far ahead, his rank was still falling, and his story still needed to prove itself fast. But now he had something better than panic.

He had direction.

Outside, Tokyo’s evening trains carried thousands of people home, each one moving toward a future they assumed belonged to them. Inside a small apartment, Haruki drew a boy whose future had gone missing — and somewhere above him on the ranking board, another creator had unknowingly become the first wall he needed to climb.
