Entertainment Creator System: Building an Anime Empire

Chapter 23: Chapter 23: Mizuno Rei’s Problem

Mizuno Rei had twenty-three unread emails — five manuscript reviews, three creator disputes, two scheduling meetings, one marketing presentation — and exactly zero interest in any of them. Her attention stayed fixed on a retention graph belonging to a creator with fewer than six hundred readers. Objectively a poor use of her time. Unfortunately, also the most interesting thing on her desk.

She took a sip of coffee. Cold. Again. Third cup this week. A new office record.

The graph belonged to Threadless Gate. The numbers weren’t spectacular, not yet.

Reader count: 547Comments: 112Ranking: 31

Nothing about those metrics should have caught editorial attention. Yet something did — the shape. Most new creators produced the same graph: a spike, then a drop, then another drop, then abandonment. Sometimes the creator disappeared. Sometimes the readers disappeared. Usually both. Haruki’s graph looked different. Messier. Healthier. Readers left, then returned. Mistakes happened, then improvements followed. The growth wasn’t smooth, and that was exactly why she liked it — growth rarely looked clean in real life.

A knock interrupted her. ”Come in.”

Assistant editor Nakamura stepped in with a tablet — twenty-four, energetic, entirely too curious, a dangerous combination. ”You’ve been looking at that graph for three days.”

Mizuno didn’t bother denying it. ”Two days.”

”Three.”

”Two.”

”Three.”

She sighed. The argument was unwinnable, mostly because Nakamura was right.

The younger editor sat across from her and immediately spotted the series title. ”Threadless Gate.” Mizuno nodded. Nakamura leaned in. ”What’s special about it?”

A reasonable question. A hard one to answer — the artwork wasn’t exceptional, the premise wasn’t revolutionary, the audience wasn’t massive. Yet something kept pulling her attention back.

”The creator listens,” she finally said.

Nakamura blinked. ”That’s it?”

”No.” Mizuno folded her arms. ”But it’s part of it.” She pulled up several charts — Chapter One, Two, Three, Four — and the progression became obvious: problems appeared, then adjustments, then improvements. Most creators resisted criticism. Haruki analyzed it. That difference mattered a lot.

Nakamura studied the data, then nodded slowly. ”I see it.” Good — at least she wasn’t imagining things. The younger editor pointed at Chapter Three. ”The retention collapse.”

”Exactly.”

Then Chapter Four. ”The recovery.”

”Exactly.” A creator improving that fast was rare. Not impossible. Rare.

The office phone rang before the conversation could go further. Mizuno answered automatically; the call lasted less than a minute, and when it ended she looked annoyed.

Nakamura noticed. ”Problem?”

”Budget meeting.” The younger editor winced — a perfectly reasonable reaction. Nobody enjoyed budget meetings, especially not editors, because budget meetings translated creative ambition into numbers. Numbers were useful. Numbers were also depressing.

The conversation shifted back to work — active projects, creators, schedules, marketing, sales, the ordinary machinery that kept the industry running. Then another creator report came in, and one name stood out immediately: Kuroda Ryu. Current category leader, consistent growth, strong retention, excellent performance.

Mizuno smiled slightly. ”Kuroda keeps pretending he isn’t mentoring that kid.”

Nakamura laughed. ”The messages?”

”The messages.” Editors knew more than creators realized — a dangerous truth.

The younger editor tilted her head. ”Do you think they’ll become rivals?”

Mizuno considered it, then shook her head. ”No.”

”Really?”

”Not yet.” The answer came easily — rivalry required proximity, and Haruki wasn’t close. Not in readers, not in experience, not in influence. The gap remained enormous. What interested her wasn’t competition. It was trajectory. Some creators grew fast and stalled. Others grew slowly and never stopped. Those were the dangerous ones — the ones who built careers.

A notification appeared: automatic platform monitoring had flagged a discussion thread for unusual activity. She opened it, then sighed immediately.

Threadless Gate Is Overrated

Nakamura leaned over. ”Oh.”

The thread had dozens of replies — some agreeing, some disagreeing, most arguing, passionately, emotionally, loudly. Mizuno scrolled through it, then smiled, which surprised Nakamura.

”What?”

The younger editor pointed at the title. ”People are attacking the series.”

”Good.”

Nakamura blinked. ”What?”

”Good,” she repeated, patiently. A story with no critics rarely mattered. Readers only argued about stories they cared about. Indifference was the real danger, not criticism. The thread kept growing while they watched — one reader defending Ren, another attacking the pacing, a third praising the mystery, a fourth complaining about the same mystery. Perfect. Healthy. Alive.

She closed the page. The discussion would keep going without her, just as it should.

By late afternoon the office gradually emptied — editors leaving, meetings ending, computers powering down. Mizuno stayed. One final email sat unanswered, addressed to Haruki Amamiya. She looked at the draft, then deleted it. No message. Not today. The creator didn’t need advice every week — growth required space, and professional editors learned to resist the temptation to interfere. Most of the time.

She gathered her things and headed for the elevator. Outside, evening settled over Tokyo — office workers flooding the streets, neon signs lighting up storefronts, the city busy, alive, moving. Somewhere within it, an eighteen-year-old creator was probably worrying about rankings, comments, retention graphs, and a dozen other things.

Mizuno smiled slightly. Good. Worrying meant he cared. The important part was whether he kept creating anyway.

Because talent started careers. Persistence finished them.

And so far, Haruki seemed to have both.
