Entertainment Creator System: Building an Anime Empire

Chapter 1: Chapter 1: The Day After Graduation

[No golden age has arrived. No masterpiece has ever forced children from different countries to argue about characters they’ve never met. Haruki has always known that. He’s about to learn the world just noticed too.]

Haruki Amamiya stood beneath the pale March sky and stared at the school gate for longer than necessary.

Students passed around him in noisy groups, laughing, taking pictures, exchanging contacts, promising to meet again even though half of them already knew they would slowly drift apart. Their uniforms looked too neat for people who had just escaped twelve years of classrooms, exams, club activities, and adult expectations.

Haruki held his graduation certificate in one hand. The other held nothing, and that bothered him more than it should have.

Most of his classmates had something waiting — university, vocational school, a family business, job training. Some had vague dreams they spoke about loudly, because loudness made uncertainty look like confidence. Haruki had excellent grades, a healthy body, decent looks, and enough social sense to avoid becoming the quiet background boy people forgot after graduation. On paper, he was fine. In reality, he had no answer.

”Haruki!”

The voice reached him before the person did. He turned just in time for Yui Tachibana to stop in front of him, slightly breathless, her dark hair swinging over one shoulder. She wore the same uniform as everyone else, but somehow looked less like she had finished school and more like she was preparing to drag life forward by force.

That had always been Yui — childhood friend, neighbor, the first person to scold him when he acted too calm, and the first to notice when he was only pretending to be.

”You disappeared,” she said.

”I was standing here.”

”That counts as disappearing when everyone else is taking pictures.”

Haruki glanced toward the courtyard, where students were posing with flowers, teachers, and parents. Parents. The word passed quietly through his mind. He pushed it away before it could settle, but Yui noticed anyway — her expression softened for half a second, then returned to normal before pity could reach it. She was careful like that. She knew he hated being treated like an orphan first and a person second.

”Come on,” she said, lifting her phone. ”One picture.”

”Do I have a choice?”

”No.”

”Then why ask?”

”Because I’m polite.”

”You are many things. Polite is under review.”

Yui smiled, stepped beside him, and raised the phone. Two eighteen-year-olds stood under the gate of a Tokyo high school in the year 2000, surrounded by a world that should have felt familiar. It didn’t — and that was Haruki’s oldest secret.

At three years old, memories had returned to him. Not dreams, not imagination — memories of another Japan, another life, a tired salaryman with a mild interest in manga, anime, and games but nothing strong enough to call passion, who had worked, aged, complained, entertained himself after office hours, and died with more regrets than achievements.

This life was different. He had studied, trained, made friends, eaten properly, exercised — refused, deliberately, to become the lonely adult he remembered being. And yet, on the day after childhood ended, he still felt the same old fear pressing against his ribs.

What now?

The phone clicked. Yui checked it and nodded with satisfaction. ”Good.”

”Let me see.”

”No.”

”That means I looked bad.”

”That means I looked good.”

”A selfish standard.”

”A correct standard.”

Haruki laughed despite himself. Around them the world kept moving — a teacher wiped his eyes while blaming allergies, someone’s mother cried loudly enough to embarrass her son in front of everyone, buses rolled past the fence, screens glowed in students’ hands, notifications chimed, billboards flashed ads for streaming dramas, idol groups, mobile games, foreign films.

Technology had arrived early in this world. Entertainment hadn’t caught up. The internet, streaming, digital art tools, smartphones — everything needed for a cultural explosion already existed, and none of it had exploded. Manga stayed niche. Anime stayed small. Studios survived on modest domestic audiences while publishers treated illustrated stories as a side business. No golden age. No industry giant. No single work that made kids on opposite sides of the planet argue about characters they’d never met.

Haruki knew a world like that could exist. He remembered one. But memory wasn’t talent, and knowing a mountain existed didn’t mean he could climb it.

Yui nudged his arm. ”You’re thinking too much again.”

”I just graduated. Thinking is legally allowed.”

”Not with that face.”

”What face?”

”The one you make when you’re trying to solve your whole life before lunch.”

Haruki had no defense for that.

”So?” Yui looked toward the street, then back at him. ”What are you going to do now?”

There it was — the question everyone asked today. Haruki had respectable answers ready: university next year, part-time work first, maybe business, maybe digital media, maybe something stable. All reasonable. All safe. None of them felt alive.

His gaze drifted to a nearby student’s phone, where a web manga platform was advertising a contest for amateur creators. The prize money was unimpressive. The readership was worse. The comments under the ad held more jokes than excitement.

Still, he stared.

Yui followed his gaze. ”Manga?”

He almost denied it. ”Maybe,” he said instead.

Her eyebrows rose — not mockingly, carefully. ”You’ve never said that seriously before.”

”I never had a reason to.”

”And now?”

Haruki folded the graduation certificate slightly between his fingers, then made himself relax. ”Now I’m eighteen. If I choose something only because it’s safe, I might wake up at forty and hate myself.”

Yui went quiet. That had landed too close to true, and he regretted saying it the moment it left his mouth — but she didn’t laugh. She studied him like she was comparing the boy in front of her to someone only she could see.

Then she smiled, no teasing in it this time. ”If you make manga, I’ll read it.”

”You say that without knowing whether I’m terrible.”

”I’ve seen your middle school drawings.”

”That should make you less confident.”

”It makes me prepared.”

Haruki groaned. ”Cruel.”

”Honest.”

Pain flashed behind his eyes — sharp, clean, a pressure like something inside his skull had opened. He staggered.

Yui grabbed his sleeve. ”Haruki?”

The schoolyard noise fell away. The sky blurred. For one terrible second he thought the old life had finally caught up with the new one.

Then a voice spoke inside his mind. Cold. Clear. Mechanical.

[Host age requirement met.]

Haruki froze.

[Creative intent detected.]

The air in front of him shimmered, and a translucent blue screen unfolded where empty space should have been. Yui’s hand was still on his sleeve, her worried face inches from his — but she couldn’t see it. Only he could.

[Entertainment Creator System activated.]

His heartbeat slammed once against his chest as the words resolved.

Haruki stopped breathing for a moment — not because he failed to understand, but because he understood too well. The world had no golden age. The industry had no giant. The path had no pioneer. And now, impossibly, something had laid a road in front of him anyway.

”Haruki.” Yui squeezed his sleeve. ”Are you okay?”

He looked at her, at the gate, at the students leaving childhood behind, at the city waiting beyond the fence. For eighteen years he’d tried to live properly. Maybe it was time to live boldly instead.

He smiled slowly. ”I think I know what I’m going to do.”

Yui narrowed her eyes. ”That sounds dangerous.”

”It probably is.”

”Good.” Her grip loosened, but she didn’t step back. ”Then don’t do it halfway.”

Haruki looked once more at the mission only he could see.

Thirty days. One Chapter. One beginning.

The entertainment industry stayed average, sleepy, unaware. It wouldn’t last.

”No,” he said, and this time the smile reached his eyes. ”I won’t.”
