Entertainment Creator System: Building an Anime Empire

Chapter 31: Chapter 31: The Expensive Choice

Haruki ignored three messages before noon. One from Yui. One from Mizuno. One from Kuroda. That alone should have warned him he was making a bad decision. Instead, he silenced his phone, turned it face-down, and opened the system store.

Chapter Eight waited unfinished on one side of his monitor. The Discovery Creator Support Program nomination waited unanswered in his email. His bank spreadsheet waited in another window like a patient executioner. Too many voices had filled his life recently — Yui worried, Mizuno corrected, Kuroda warned, Takeda joked while accidentally speaking truth, readers argued, forums judged. Even the system had developed the irritating habit of appearing whenever he was about to do something stupid.

For once, Haruki wanted to choose without being handled.

The system store opened.

[Creator Store]

Reader Retention Prediction — Purchased Story Analysis — 50 Points Character Consistency Analysis — 75 Points Advanced Narrative Evaluation — 350 Points Industry Insight Package — Locked Art Efficiency Enhancement — 500 Points Professional Serialization Simulation — 700 Points Current Creator Points: 430

He stared at Advanced Narrative Evaluation. Three hundred fifty points — almost everything he had. The sensible move was to wait. A bigger purchase might appear later, a better opportunity might come after the nomination, and saving points had always seemed like the responsible choice. But responsible had produced Chapter Five. Safe had produced weak engagement. The Chapter Eight deadline pressed against him, the support program selection loomed somewhere close, and if he wanted to prove he belonged among professional candidates, the next Chapter needed to land hard.

He selected the option. The system asked for confirmation: Spend 350 Creator Points? He clicked yes before he could talk himself out of it.

[Creator Points Spent: 350][Remaining Creator Points: 80][Advanced Narrative Evaluation Activated]

For several seconds, nothing happened. Then every open document on his monitor changed — annotations appearing beside his outline, red marks highlighting scenes, yellow warnings around dialogue blocks, a structure map unfolding across the screen showing tension curves, emotional beats, reader-question density, unresolved plot threads.

Haruki leaned forward. His excitement lasted about twenty seconds.

Then he saw the first warning.

Core Issue: Protagonist Motivation Becoming Reactive.

The second: Ren’s personal desire remains underdeveloped compared to external mystery.

The third: Fate Observation Bureau threat strong, but emotional stakes weak.

The fourth: Chapter Eight likely to satisfy plot curiosity while failing to deepen reader attachment.

His mouth went dry. This wasn’t a polishing tool. This was an execution. He kept scrolling, and more warnings kept appearing — Shiori’s role unclear, the second anomaly underused, the Bureau director compelling but risking overshadowing Ren entirely, mystery questions accumulating faster than answers, reader frustration likely to set in by Chapter Ten if a real payoff didn’t arrive soon.

He pushed back from the desk. The apartment felt warmer than it had a minute ago. He’d spent almost every point he had to be told his story’s foundation was starting to crack.

His phone buzzed again. Yui. He looked at it, didn’t answer. It stopped, then a message came through: Are you alive?

He typed three words back. Working. Later. Sent it before guilt could talk him out of it. A moment later: Eat something. He didn’t respond to that one.

The evaluation stayed open on the screen. For a while he just sat there, angry at a tool he’d chosen to buy with his own money — points he’d earned, spent on a report telling him he wasn’t as far along as he’d let himself believe. Then he opened Chapter Eight and started changing things. Not carefully. Not calmly. Aggressively.

Ren’s goal got sharper. He no longer wanted only answers — he wanted to find the captured anomaly because, for the first time, someone else in the world might actually be like him. Not a clue. Not a mystery object. A person. That single shift changed the scene a lot, and suddenly Ren’s recklessness in Chapter Eight stopped being plot movement and became something else entirely. Loneliness. Need. Desperation. The Chapter gained real weight.

Haruki worked for five straight hours. No calls, no food, no forums, no advice. By evening, the revised draft looked stronger than anything he’d written so far. It also looked unfinished, and worse, it needed six pages redrawn — six pages he did not have time to redraw before the deadline tightened around his throat.

At seven, Mizuno sent another message. I assume you’re ignoring me intentionally. Dangerous habit.

He stared at it. Then, for the first time since meeting her, he didn’t reply. A strange thrill passed through him — not pleasant, defiant. He knew it was childish. He also knew he was tired of being corrected before he’d even had the chance to make the mistake himself. Maybe this was a mistake. Fine. Then it would be his mistake, made on his own terms.

At nine, Takeda called. He rejected it. At ten, his hand cramped badly enough that he dropped the stylus, pain shooting through his fingers, sharp and bright. He flexed his hand, waited, picked the stylus back up.

The system appeared.

[Physical Strain Warning: Right Hand Stress Level — Elevated]

Recommendation: Stop for 40 minutes.

He closed the window immediately. The warning vanished. He kept drawing.

Page after page changed. The captured anomaly became a girl in a holding room beneath the Bureau facility — no visible destiny thread either, but unlike Ren, she smiled when the agents questioned her. Not because she was brave. Because she’d already given up. When Ren saw her through the surveillance feed, his anger finally became personal, and that was the missing piece the whole time. Not lore. Not stakes. Connection. The Chapter finally had a heart underneath the plot.

By midnight, he finished the redrawn pages. His hand trembled, his eyes burned, his back ached, and the apartment smelled of coffee, dust, and cold food he’d never gotten around to opening. He uploaded the scheduled file with three minutes to spare.

No one had helped. No one had advised. No one had stopped him. The Chapter belonged entirely to him, and for several seconds that felt like a victory worth all of it.

Then his fingers cramped again — harder this time. The stylus slipped from his hand and hit the floor. He hissed through his teeth, gripping his wrist.

A new system window appeared. This one didn’t glow blue. It glowed amber.

Drawing Efficiency Reduced For Next 72 Hours Recommended Action: Rest

He stared at the warning. Reduced efficiency. Seventy-two hours. The next update was due in two days. His stomach sank. The messages he’d ignored all evening still sat unread. The expensive evaluation window still sat open behind everything else. His Creator Points sat at eighty, and the Chapter was stronger now, maybe much stronger — but the cost had arrived almost immediately, faster than he’d expected any consequence to.

Outside, Tokyo moved through the night without caring whether one young creator had pushed too hard for one Chapter. Inside, Haruki sat in front of a finished Chapter, a hurting hand, and the first bad decision he’d made while fully aware, the whole time, that it might hurt him.

No mentor appeared to soften it. No reward arrived to make it worth it. No lesson wrapped itself neatly around the moment the way it usually seemed to in stories like the one he was writing.

Only pain. Only consequence. Only the next deadline, waiting closer than it had been that morning.
