Entertainment Creator System: Building an Anime Empire

Chapter 21: Chapter 21: Yui’s Side of the Story

Yui Tachibana did not call Haruki that morning. She wanted to — her thumb hovered over his name twice before she locked the screen and set the phone face-down on the counter.

The small café where she worked part-time smelled of roasted coffee, toast, and rain-soaked coats. Morning customers came in waves: office workers before eight, university students after nine, neighborhood regulars who ordered the same drink every day and still studied the menu like it might betray them.

Yui tied her apron tighter and carried two cups to the corner table. ”Here you go.”

”Thank you.” She smiled automatically, and the customer smiled back. Normal. Easy. Useful. Work gave her something Haruki’s manga didn’t: tasks with clear endings. Take order. Make drink. Serve table. Clean cup. Repeat.

Haruki’s world had no clean endings anymore — reader counts, ranking boards, forums, editors, rival creators, retention graphs. Every time she visited his apartment there were more screens open, more notes taped to the wall, more half-finished sketches piled beside cold coffee. He smiled more now, and that made her happy. He slept less now, and that made her angry. Both feelings sat together uncomfortably.

During her break, Yui sat near the back door with a canned tea and opened the forum thread about Threadless Gate. She’d promised herself she wouldn’t read it. She broke that promise in under ten minutes.

The thread had grown overnight. Threadless Gate Chapter Four Discussion — Bureau Finally Wins. She scrolled slowly — some readers praised the loss, some complained Ren was still too quiet, some loved Shiori, one person had written three paragraphs arguing the author was hiding a second protagonist. Then a comment stopped her fingers.

Author has potential, but update speed will decide everything. If he can’t keep up, readers will move on.

She stared at that sentence longer than she wanted to. Update speed. She looked toward the café window — rain sliding down the glass in thin, uneven lines, people hurrying past with umbrellas, each one chasing some private deadline. Haruki had one too. Only his was invisible. If he slowed down, readers might leave. If he pushed too hard, he might break. Her break ended before she found an answer.

By noon the café filled up again, and Yui moved between tables carrying trays while her mind kept drifting back to his apartment. He’d looked thinner yesterday — not dramatically, just enough for someone who’d known him since childhood to notice.

When her shift ended, she bought two boxed meals from a convenience store and walked to his apartment instead of calling. This time she knocked. No answer. She knocked again. Still nothing. Her jaw tightened, and she used the spare key.

The apartment was quiet except for the soft hum of the computer. Haruki sat at his desk, one hand still on the stylus, asleep in his chair. Not resting. Collapsed. His screen showed Chapter Five thumbnails, and beside it a spreadsheet listed projected update days, page counts, reader goals, monthly expenses.

Yui set the meals on the table and looked at the numbers. Rent. Utilities. Food. Platform income: 0 yen. Savings remaining: not enough. Her chest tightened.

Haruki stirred before she could step away. He blinked at the screen, then at her.

”Yui?”

”You fell asleep sitting up.”

”I was thinking.”

”You were drooling on your sleeve.” He looked down — he wasn’t drooling. She didn’t apologize.

He rubbed his face. ”What time is it?”

”Almost three.” His eyes moved straight back to the monitor, and Yui reached over and turned the screen off.

He froze. That woke him properly. ”Yui.”

”No.”

”I need to—”

”No.” Her voice came out sharper than she meant it to, and the room went still. For once, Haruki didn’t joke.

Yui stood beside the desk, hands clenched around the strap of her bag. ”You’re not eating properly.”

”I ate yesterday.”

”That is not the defense you think it is.”

”I have work.”

”You also have a body.”

He looked away first, and that annoyed her more — not because he was avoiding her, but because he knew she was right.

She pulled out the chair across from him and sat down. For several seconds she said nothing, not for drama, but because if she spoke too fast she might say something cruel. Haruki watched her carefully, and she hated that too — the way he’d started looking at everyone like feedback. Useful. Measurable. Interpretable. She missed the boy who sometimes argued just to argue.

Finally she spoke. ”I’m happy you found something.” His expression softened. ”But I don’t want your dream to eat you.”

The words hung between them. Outside, rain tapped against the balcony railing. Haruki looked tired — eighteen, but older around the eyes.

”I’m fine,” he said.

”No. You’re excited. There’s a difference.”

He started to answer, then stopped. Good. At least he still knew when not to lie badly.

She pushed one boxed meal toward him. ”Eat.” He obeyed — not immediately, but he opened it. Small victory.

While he ate, his computer chimed. A blue screen appeared near the monitor. Yui couldn’t see it; Haruki could, and his eyes sharpened.

”What is it?”

He hesitated, then turned the monitor back on. ”I have enough Creator Points to buy Reader Retention Prediction.”

”Is that good?”

”It costs a hundred points. I have four hundred eighty.”

”Then why haven’t you bought it?”

He looked embarrassed. ”I was saving.”

”For what?”

”I don’t know.”

She stared at him. He stared back. Then he laughed under his breath. ”Okay. That sounds stupid when said aloud.”

”It does.”

He selected the option. The screen flashed.

[Creator Points Spent: 100][Feature Purchased: Reader Retention Prediction][Remaining Creator Points: 380]

A new analysis window opened. He read silently, and his face changed — not fear, concern.

”What?” she asked.

He turned the monitor slightly. She still couldn’t see the system window, but he explained. ”Chapter Five has a predicted retention problem.”

”Why?”

”Too much planning. Not enough immediate tension.”

She pointed at the cold boxed meal. ”Funny. Same problem as your life.”

He groaned. Satisfying. Then he opened his outline and crossed out three scenes.

”What are you doing?”

”Fixing it.”

”After eating.”

He paused, then picked up his chopsticks again. Better. Not perfect. Better.

Yui leaned back in the chair and watched him eat. For the first time in days, his shoulders looked less rigid. She didn’t solve his problem. Didn’t give story advice. Didn’t tell him what to write. Good — she didn’t want to become another system window in his life.

After a while he glanced at her. ”Thanks.”

”For what?”

”For stopping me.”

She looked toward the rain-blurred window. ”You’re allowed to chase your dream. Just don’t make me chase after your corpse.”

He choked slightly on the rice. Good. A little fear was healthy.

Outside, Tokyo stayed gray and wet. Inside, Haruki ate his first proper meal of the day, a hundred Creator Points disappeared, and Chapter Five quietly changed direction before it could fail.

Yui didn’t know where his story would go. She only knew one thing.

If Haruki intended to run toward the entertainment industry, someone had to make sure he remembered to breathe.
