Entertainment Creator System: Building an Anime Empire

Chapter 39: Chapter 39: The Response

Haruki lost. Not publicly, not dramatically. Internally. The battle lasted approximately sixteen hours. Then he lost.

At 9:14 the next morning, he opened Hayato Kanzaki’s article again. A mistake, a predictable one, a very human one. The article hadn’t changed a single word overnight. His emotional reaction to it had. Every reread turned up a new irritation, a new criticism, a new sentence that seemed increasingly arrogant the third and fourth time through, until he wasn’t even sure whether he was reading the actual article anymore or just the version of it his own frustration kept rewriting.

The comments beneath it had multiplied overnight — several thousand replies now, some defending emotional storytelling, others defending fast-paced storytelling, plenty of people who seemed to just be enjoying the chaos for its own sake. The internet had a remarkable talent for turning disagreement into entertainment for everyone except the two people actually disagreeing.

He kept scrolling. Another mistake, then another, then another, until an entire hour had vanished, gone, completely wasted. Chapter Ten remained untouched. The creator war kept growing without him lifting a finger toward it.

A blue notification appeared.

[Behavior Analysis]

Creative Output: 0 Forum Consumption: Excessive Recommendation: Return to work.

He closed the window immediately, without reading further — the second time this week he’d done exactly that. A dangerous pattern he was aware enough to notice and not quite ready to break.

His phone vibrated. Ignored. Another message. Ignored. A call. Ignored. The silence felt strangely satisfying, not healthy, satisfying, and the distinction mattered even if he wasn’t in the mood to sit with it.

Around noon, a direct message arrived. Hayato, again. He opened it immediately — another mistake.

No response? Disappointed. I thought creators should defend their beliefs. Then: Or maybe you’re realizing I’m right.

He stared, reread it, and felt the irritation return instantly, powerfully. The man was clearly provoking him, obviously provoking him, painfully obviously provoking him. The worst part was that it was working exactly as designed.

For several moments he just sat there. Then opened the reply box — a terrible decision, an absolutely terrible one. His fingers moved anyway.

I read your article. I disagree with almost all of it.

Reasonable. Measured. Professional. The conversation should have ended right there. Instead, Hayato replied within two minutes.

Good. At least you have a spine. Then: Explain why.

The trap closed, beautifully, effortlessly, and Haruki walked straight into it with his eyes fully open. The argument ran three hours. Three entire hours that should have belonged to Chapter Ten instead went to defending ideas, explaining philosophy, debating pacing, arguing emotion, arguing retention, arguing readers back and forth without either of them budging an inch. By the end, neither person had changed their mind, not even slightly. The only measurable outcome was lost time — hours he couldn’t get back and hadn’t actually used to convince anyone of anything.

At 4:27, reality finally caught up with him, in the form of analytics.

[Chapter Ten Progress]

Current Completion: 31% Expected Completion: 68% Deadline: Tomorrow

He stared at it, then the clock, then the Chapter, then the message history stretching back three hours. Gone. Completely gone, and the realization hit hard and fast this time — the argument hadn’t cost him emotionally. It had cost him professionally, in a way he could actually measure in a percentage.

His phone rang. Mizuno. He answered slowly, guiltily, and she spoke before he could get a word out.

”You replied.” Not a question. A statement, and a deeply disappointing one at that.

He rubbed his forehead. ”Yeah.”

Silence followed — the dangerous kind, the kind that usually preceded something worse than anger. Finally: ”How much time?”

He hesitated, then answered honestly. ”Three hours.”

He could almost see her close her eyes on the other end of the call, a physical manifestation of editorial pain traveling clean through the connection. ”Haruki.” Her voice stayed calm, which somehow made it worse than if she’d raised it. ”Did the argument improve the Chapter?”

”No.”

”Did it improve retention?”

”No.”

”Did it improve your career?”

”No.”

Each answer landed a little worse than the last. She nodded, he could hear it somehow, and then delivered the final blow. ”Did it improve anything?”

The room went quiet. Very quiet. He already knew the answer before he said it. ”No.”

The call ended shortly after — not angrily, not dramatically, just professionally, which somehow felt worse than either of the other options would have.

For the next hour he sat alone. No messages, no forums, no analytics. Just silence, the kind that shows up specifically after realizing you’ve made a real mistake — not a learning experience, not a growth opportunity dressed up in kinder language. A mistake, plain and simple, and the distinction felt important to actually hold onto instead of softening.

At six, another message arrived. Kuroda, unexpectedly.

Congratulations. Haruki immediately hated where this was going. You just discovered why public creator fights are addictive. They feel productive. They usually aren’t.

He stared at it, then laughed despite himself, because the line was painfully accurate — the whole argument had felt like work while it was happening, felt like defending something that mattered, and had produced nothing except a missed afternoon and a Chapter that still needed thirty-seven percent of itself written by tomorrow.

Outside, evening settled across Tokyo. Inside, Chapter Ten remained unfinished. The creator war continued without him. The arguments continued, the discussions continued, the whole online machine kept grinding forward exactly as it had before he’d made the mistake of engaging with it. The only thing that had actually stopped was his own progress.

And for the first time in weeks, the setback belonged entirely to him. Not readers, not editors, not money, not bad luck, not a rival’s public criticism landing at the wrong moment. Him. His choice to reply. His distraction. His ego, wanting to prove a point to a stranger instead of proving it the way that actually mattered — on the page, in the next Chapter, where readers would actually see it.

The realization was unpleasant, necessary, and unfortunately impossible to blame on anyone else no matter how he tried to angle it.

The deadline remained tomorrow. Chapter Ten remained incomplete, sitting at thirty-one percent with the rest of the night to make up the difference. Now he had to decide whether the argument mattered more than the story, and for the first time in this whole exhausting stretch of weeks, the answer felt genuinely obvious to him.

The real question, the one that actually mattered now, was whether he would follow through on it — or find some new distraction waiting to make the same mistake feel reasonable all over again.
