Entertainment Creator System: Building an Anime Empire

Chapter 19: Chapter 19: The Forum Thread

Failure bothered Haruki — not because Chapter Three had performed badly. It hadn’t. The Chapter still attracted readers, the audience still grew, the story still moved forward. What bothered him was knowing it could have done better.

The retention graph still sat open on his second monitor — Page Twelve, Thirteen, Fourteen, the drop-off point, the evidence, the crime scene. He stared at it over coffee, then closed it. He’d already learned the lesson; staring at the graph another hundred times wouldn’t improve Chapter Four. Creating would. A good rule, one he intended to remember for at least twenty-four hours before probably panicking again. The thought amused him.

His attention drifted to the comments section, a habit that had become part of his routine. Reader feedback wasn’t perfect, but it was useful. Today something different caught his eye — someone had posted a link to a discussion forum, New Creator Discussion Board. Curious, he clicked.

Dozens of threads filled the screen — mostly popular series, some about creators, some debating rankings. Then he found one mentioning his story.

Threadless Gate — Hidden Gem or Slow Burn?

His heart rate picked up. He clicked. The thread had nearly fifty replies — more than all his Chapter comments combined.

MoonReader: The mystery is good. The gate is good. The atmosphere is good. But the pacing needs work.

CoffeeAddict: Agreed. I almost dropped it during the Bureau explanation.

BlackFox: Chapter Three improved the protagonist. Ren actually makes decisions now.

MangaDreamer: The story feels different from everything else in the category. That’s why I’m reading it.

He kept scrolling — praise, criticism, theories, one user with an entire page arguing that Shiori was secretly the real protagonist. Completely wrong, but strangely entertaining. He smiled. The discussion felt alive, real — readers weren’t just consuming the story, they were arguing about it, thinking about it. That carried real weight.

Then one comment erased the smile.

CrimsonCrow: The author has a good concept but no competition inside the story. The protagonist isn’t struggling enough. Everything comes too easily.

He stopped scrolling and reread it twice. The criticism landed, because it wasn’t entirely wrong. Ren faced mysteries, questions, danger — but very few losses, very few consequences. The challenge existed. The pressure didn’t.

A blue screen appeared.

[Reader Sentiment Analysis: Repeated Criticism Detected — Low Consequence Density]

Recommendation: Increase cost of success.

Haruki sighed. The system agreed. Wonderful.

His phone buzzed. Takeda — again. At this point Haruki suspected Takeda spent more time monitoring his series than he did.

”Hello.”

”You made the forum.” No greeting, no context, just excitement.

”Apparently.”

”Do you know what this means?” Haruki already regretted asking. ”You’re becoming relevant.” He said it so sincerely that Haruki couldn’t even argue.

”I read the thread,” Takeda continued. Concerning. ”They’re right.”

He blinked. ”What?”

”The readers.” A pause. ”Ren needs to get punched.”

Haruki closed his eyes. Of course. Everything came back to punching.

Takeda stayed completely serious. ”The protagonist keeps discovering things.”

”That’s called a mystery story.”

”He should also fail.” The sentence lingered — because buried under the terrible delivery was a real point. Failure. Consequences. Costs. Readers remembered those.

The call ended shortly after, leaving Haruki alone with his thoughts and, unfortunately, some of Takeda’s advice.

He turned back to Chapter Four. The current outline: Ren investigates. Ren finds clues. Ren learns information. Ren escapes danger. He stared at it and frowned — the pattern was obvious, too obvious. Ren kept winning. Small victories, consistent victories, but victories nonetheless. Success without setbacks eventually became predictable, and if he published the current outline, readers would enjoy it and forget it. Not enough. Not anymore.

His stylus moved. Ren would discover the location of the second anomaly — good. Then arrive too late — better. The anomaly would already be captured — even better. The Bureau would win. Ren would lose. The moment that idea landed, the Chapter improved. Questions emerged, frustration emerged, motivation emerged, and most importantly, future conflict emerged.

Outside, afternoon sunlight streamed through the window, cars moving below, people hurrying through the city. Inside, Haruki rewrote three pages, then four, then five, the story getting stronger with each change — not because it was darker, but because it now had consequences.

As evening approached, a new notification appeared — not the system, not the platform. A direct message from Kuroda.

Read the discussion thread. Don’t chase every criticism. Look for patterns. One reader can be wrong. One hundred readers usually aren’t.

— Kuroda

Haruki stared, then smiled. The advice sounded remarkably like Mizuno’s — maybe experienced creators just eventually arrived at the same conclusions. Comforting, a little.

The reader count updated.

Readers: 458

Steady growth — not explosive, not disappointing, just steady. The comments kept arriving, the discussions kept growing, the audience kept forming, slowly, one reader at a time.

Haruki looked at the unfinished pages of Chapter Four, then the forum thread, then the revised outline. A week ago, criticism had felt threatening. Today it felt useful — not because criticism had gotten more pleasant, but because he’d learned how to use it.

Outside, the city lights slowly woke up as evening settled in. Inside a small apartment, an eighteen-year-old creator prepared to give his protagonist something he desperately needed.

A loss. Because sometimes the fastest way forward wasn’t another victory. It was discovering what happened when things went wrong.
