Chapter 7: Chapter 7: The First Hundred

Haruki woke up before his alarm. The reason was simple: he wanted to check his reader count. Embarrassing, but true. His phone rested beside the bed, and he resisted for several seconds before immediately giving up.

The site loaded. His eyes went straight to analytics.

Readers: 37

He sat upright. Thirty-seven. Not three, not seven — thirty-seven. Objectively speaking, it was tiny. But objectivity had very little power against excitement. Thirty-seven real people had opened his story. Thirty-seven strangers. Thirty-seven chances. A week ago nobody knew his manga existed; now thirty-seven people did. That felt important.

He climbed out of bed and headed for the kitchen — coffee first, existential excitement second. A responsible order of priorities. While the machine ran, he checked the comments again. Four now.

Interesting premise. The gate scene was cool.Ren feels relatable.Looking forward to Chapter Two.

That last one caught and held. A simple sentence, but it lingered — because someone was waiting. Strange, wonderful, and a little terrifying all at once. For years his projects had existed entirely inside his own head. Now somebody wanted more.

His coffee finished. Haruki sat at his desk and opened the manuscript for Chapter Two. The blank page appeared, and normally that would’ve been intimidating — today felt different, because the blank page no longer meant uncertainty. It meant opportunity. His stylus moved, notes appeared: Ren standing before the gate, the mysterious voice, the first glimpse of the world beyond it. The Chapter began taking shape, slowly and naturally.

Around noon, his phone rang. Yui, of course — at this point her calls were basically part of his daily schedule.

”Good morning.”

”It’s noon.”

”Technical details.”

”No.”

He smiled. The familiar rhythm of their conversations always made things easier.

”How many readers?” Straight to business. Classic Yui.

”Thirty-seven.”

Silence. Then: ”Seriously?”

The surprise in her voice felt more satisfying than it probably should have. ”Seriously.”

Another pause. ”That’s actually good.” He blinked — Yui rarely gave praise without a qualifier attached, and the fact that she sounded genuinely impressed mattered more than he wanted to admit.

”It’s only thirty-seven.”

”I know.” A beat. ”But yesterday it was nine.”

Yesterday. Nine. Today. Thirty-seven. The difference suddenly felt bigger than the raw number — growth wasn’t measured by absolute figures, it was measured by movement. The thought settled firmly in his mind.

After hanging up, he went back to work. The story kept flowing — Ren stepping through the gate, the world beyond revealing itself, questions multiplying, mysteries deepening. The process felt enjoyable. Not easy. Enjoyable, and the difference mattered.

Hours passed. The city moved outside his window, afternoon light shifting across the floor. Then a platform notification appeared, and he opened it without hesitation — the addiction was developing fast.

Your series has entered the New Creator Discovery category.

He froze, reread it, then read it a third time. The category wasn’t famous. It wasn’t a major recommendation slot or front-page exposure. But it was something — visibility, opportunity — and his heart rate picked up.

He checked analytics again. The numbers were moving faster now.

Readers: 41. Then 44. Then 48. Then 53.

Not explosive, but noticeable. Steady. Consistent. Real. Each increase was another person, another reader, another chance, and watching it climb energized him more than he expected.

A blue screen appeared.

Haruki laughed. The system really did reward everything — not everything, progress. The distinction mattered.

One hundred forty-five points. A respectable amount, and he had absolutely no idea what to spend them on.

”System.” The blue screen responded instantly. ”What can I buy?”

A new menu appeared — for the first time. He leaned forward.

His eyes widened slightly. Now this was interesting — actually useful, dangerously useful. The system wasn’t selling power. It was selling information, and the logic fascinated him: information reduced mistakes, mistakes cost time, time cost opportunities. Almost unfair. Almost.

He resisted spending the points right away. Barely. He definitely considered it, more than once. But he went back to work instead — Chapter Two mattered more, and the best way to earn points, gain readers, or build a future was still the same thing: creating. Everything eventually came back to that, and the thought grounded him.

By evening, analytics updated again.

Readers: 82

Haruki stared. Eighty-two — not unreal because of the size, but because of what it represented. Momentum. The story was moving, the audience was growing, the dream was becoming something he could actually measure.

Outside, Tokyo glowed under the evening sky. Inside, an eighteen-year-old creator sat with a reader count of eighty-two and a half-finished second Chapter. Neither would impress professionals. Neither would change the world. But both meant the same thing: proof. Proof that someone was listening. Proof that progress existed. Proof that the future wasn’t just a fantasy anymore.

Haruki smiled, then opened the next page of Chapter Two.

The readers wanted answers. And for the first time in his life, people were actually waiting for him to give them.
