Chapter 33: Chapter 33: The Wrong Conclusion

The danger arrived disguised as success. Haruki didn’t recognize it immediately. Most people didn’t — success rarely announced itself as a future problem. It usually arrived carrying compliments.

Three days after Chapter Eight’s release, the reader count crossed seven hundred. Comments kept increasing, forum discussions stayed active, the controversy thread had finally died down, and the nomination process continued moving forward somewhere out of his sight. Everything looked positive. Which was exactly why Haruki made a terrible decision.

He convinced himself Chapter Eight had proved something. The logic seemed sound enough on the surface — the Chapter that nearly injured his hand had become his best-performing Chapter yet. Therefore, working harder worked. The conclusion contained a flaw large enough to drive a train through, but Haruki couldn’t see it yet, not from where he was standing.

His drawing efficiency remained reduced. The system hadn’t exaggerated — every page took longer, every correction hurt a little more than it should have. The delay frustrated him, a lot, and the Chapter Nine deadline kept approaching steadily while the schedule around it looked increasingly uncomfortable. His frustration grew right alongside it. The combination was dangerous, though he didn’t have the distance yet to see that either.

At noon, another email arrived. Discovery Creator Support Program. He opened it immediately, then frowned — the message wasn’t a decision. It was a request.

He stared at it, then laughed softly. Of course. The industry wanted planning, always planning — the future, the next step, the next year, the next milestone. The problem was that his current plan mostly involved surviving next week.

The email stayed open while he worked, the future-plan request lingering somewhere in the back of his mind. Then an idea appeared. A terrible idea, the most dangerous kind — the kind that sounded perfectly reasonable when he thought it. If Chapter Eight had succeeded because he pushed harder, then maybe Chapter Nine deserved the same treatment. He liked the idea immediately, which should have worried him more than it did.

His phone buzzed. Yui. Ignored. It stopped, then another message came through: Did you eat?

Later, he typed, sending it without really thinking about it. Then he went back to work. Technically true. Eventually. Probably. Maybe.

Hours passed. The Chapter kept growing, and the story itself genuinely improved — the captured anomaly finally got a name. Miyu. Seventeen years old, no visible destiny thread, three years imprisoned by the Bureau. For the first time, Ren saw exactly what his own future could become if things went differently, and the Chapter gained real emotional weight the moment that landed on the page. Haruki smiled. The scene worked. Really worked.

The problem was that he kept pushing after that. And after that. And after that, well past the point where the scene itself had already done its job.

At five in the afternoon, Takeda arrived unexpectedly — unfortunate timing, since Haruki was already in a terrible mood. The Chapter wasn’t progressing fast enough. His hand wasn’t recovering fast enough. The support program wasn’t deciding fast enough. Everything felt slower than he wanted it to be, all at once.

Takeda walked in carrying drinks, then immediately stopped. ”Whoa.”

Haruki looked up. ”What?”

”You look awful.” Wonderful — exactly the observation everyone wanted to hear on a day like this one.

”I’m working.”

Takeda stared at him, then at the wrist brace, then at the empty food containers scattered around the desk, then at the dark circles under his eyes. His expression shifted, less joking, more serious — an unusual sight on him. ”You need a break.”

”No.” The answer came out too instantly, and Takeda noticed.

”Haruki.”

”No.” The second refusal came even faster than the first, and the room went quiet.

Takeda frowned. ”You sound weird.” That annoyed Haruki immediately.

”I’m fine.”

”No.” Direct. Firm. Uncomfortable. ”I’ve heard you say that before.”

His irritation spiked. The conversation felt familiar — too familiar. Yui had said it. Mizuno had said it. Now Takeda was saying it too. Everyone had opinions. Everyone had advice. Everyone had warnings lined up and ready. None of them were the ones drawing the pages. None of them were facing the deadline. None of them would be the one held responsible if he failed to deliver.

The frustration finally broke loose. ”Can people stop telling me what to do?”

The words came out sharper than he meant them to. Takeda blinked, and the apartment went silent — very silent. Regret arrived almost immediately after, not enough to make him apologize yet, but enough that he noticed it sitting there.

Takeda set the drinks down on the table, nodded once, slowly. ”Okay.” No argument, no lecture, no joke. Just okay, and somehow that landed worse than any of the alternatives would have.

After he left, the apartment felt emptier than it had all week. Haruki tried getting back to work, but the pages stopped flowing the way they had an hour earlier. The conversation kept replaying in his head — annoying, distracting, impossible to fully push aside — because some small part of him already knew Takeda wasn’t entirely wrong about any of it.

A blue screen appeared.

[Behavior Analysis: Current Risk — Overcommitment]

Recommendation: Reassess priorities.

He closed the window immediately, without reading past the first line. The first time he’d ever done that. The system disappeared without protest, without further warning, just silence — and that silence followed him through the rest of the evening in a way the usual deadpan responses never quite managed to.

By ten o’clock, Chapter Nine looked stronger. Not finished, though. His wrist hurt more, his mood had gotten worse, and his actual progress had slowed down despite the extra hours he kept throwing at it. The equation made no sense on paper: work harder, get less done. The contradiction irritated him more than the pain did.

Before midnight, another email arrived — not Mizuno, not the platform. A creator. A roundtable participant. Fujimoto Akira, the blunt one. Two sentences, no more.

You missed part of the discussion. The creators who survive longest aren’t the ones who work hardest. They’re the ones still creating ten years later.

Haruki stared at it, then closed the email immediately. He didn’t want to think about it. Not tonight, not with the Chapter still unfinished and his hand still aching and every voice in his life apparently converging on the exact same warning from a dozen different directions at once.

Outside, Tokyo’s lights stretched endlessly across the darkness, indifferent as ever to one creator’s stubbornness. Inside, an eighteen-year-old sat alone with an unfinished Chapter and a growing list of people he was actively choosing not to listen to.

The Chapter would probably turn out good. Maybe even great, the way Chapter Eight had. The problem was that everything else around it seemed to be getting worse in direct proportion, and for the first time since starting this journey, Haruki wasn’t learning from a mistake anymore.

He was actively walking deeper into one, without any real intention of turning around.
