Chapter 13: Chapter 13: Reader Number 268

Haruki expected his first rival to create pressure. He did not expect Reader Number 268.

The comment appeared just after breakfast. At first glance it looked like every other comment — short, anonymous, easy to ignore. Then he actually read it.

Chapter Three is stronger, but I’m worried you’re changing the story because of rankings instead of because it’s the story you want to tell.

Haruki stared at the screen. The apartment was silent, rain from the previous night still lingering on the streets outside. Inside, one sentence had completely halted his morning — not because it was insulting, but because it was uncomfortable in a different way than criticism usually was. The kind that forced self-reflection.

His eyes moved from the comment to Chapter Three and back again. The reader didn’t know him, didn’t know his plans, didn’t know how much thought had gone into the revisions — yet it hit surprisingly close to the truth. Yesterday’s ranking drop had bothered him. The comparison with Kuroda had bothered him. The mission had bothered him. All of it had shaped his decisions, and the real question was whether those influences had improved the story or just changed it.

A blue screen appeared.

[Creator Observation]

Question Identified: Are you creating from fear or conviction? Recommendation: Answer honestly.

Haruki sighed. ”I preferred the analytics feature.” The system remained unconcerned.

He leaned back and thought it through. The black thread wasn’t a bad addition — he genuinely liked it. The organization hunting Ren wasn’t either; neither felt forced. But Reader 268 had put a finger on a real danger, one every creator probably faced eventually: chasing approval. Success required listening, but blindly obeying every opinion would wreck a story just as fast. Finding the balance was going to be hard.

His phone buzzed. Yui — at this point he wondered if she had some kind of surveillance network.

”Good morning.”

”You sound philosophical.”

”That’s usually a bad sign.”

”It usually is.”

Fair. He told her about the comment. She listened quietly, then asked a single question.

”Do you like the changes?”

He blinked. ”That’s it?”

”That’s the question.”

He thought about Chapter Three — the black thread, the organization, the increased tension, the stronger opening, the clearer conflict. A smile crept in. ”Yeah.”

”Then what’s the problem?”

He opened his mouth, then closed it, because she had a point. The issue wasn’t that he’d changed the story. The issue was why.

”Improving because you learned something is good,” she said. ”Changing because you’re scared someone else is more popular isn’t.”

Simple. Direct. Annoyingly effective. Exactly like her.

After the call, Haruki went back to work with a clearer head. Chapter Three still needed pages, the story still needed progress, the ranking still existed — but it no longer felt like a monster standing over his shoulder. Just another challenge, one among many.

His stylus moved. Ren stepped deeper into the mystery — the black thread wrapped around his wrist like living ink, strange symbols surfacing beneath his skin. For the first time he realized the thread wasn’t just connected to the hidden world. It was changing him. The scene flowed naturally, not because Haruki was forcing tension into it, but because the story itself had earned it.

Hours passed. In the early afternoon a platform notification appeared — not a comment this time, a creator-to-creator message. He opened it, and the sender’s name made him sit up immediately.

Kuroda Ryu

He stared for several seconds, then clicked. The message was short: Saw your recent update. Better pacing. Most new creators are afraid to adjust. Keep going.

That was all. No lecture, no arrogance, no challenge — just professional encouragement. He read it twice, then a third time. The number one creator in the category had taken time out of his day to send that. It felt surreal, not because Kuroda had suddenly become some heroic mentor, but because the industry felt a little more human now. A week ago, other creators had been distant figures. Now one was sending messages, and the world felt larger and smaller at the same time.

A system notification appeared.

[Industry Contact Established: Kuroda Ryu]

Status: Potential Professional Connection Reward: Creator Points +30 Current Points: 300

Haruki laughed. ”Of course that’s a reward.” Everything became a reward eventually — the system clearly had opinions about networking.

The afternoon moved quickly. Page after page emerged, and the organization hunting Ren finally got a name: the Fate Observation Bureau, a secret group tasked with monitoring abnormalities in destiny itself. The moment he wrote it down, the world of the story suddenly felt bigger, more alive, more dangerous — exactly what it needed.

By evening he checked analytics — not obsessively, only three times, which counted as progress.

Readers: 312

He smiled. Three hundred — another small milestone, small in the grand scheme of things but important to him.

A new comment appeared beneath Chapter Three: The story feels more confident now.

He stared at it, then nodded slowly — not because the story had become perfect, but because confidence was exactly what he’d been chasing. Not confidence that guaranteed success. Confidence to keep going.

Outside, the clouds finally started clearing, sunlight breaking through the evening sky and shimmering across the wet streets below. Inside a small apartment, an eighteen-year-old creator looked at a growing audience, a new professional contact, and a story that was finally starting to discover its own identity.

The rankings still mattered. The competition still existed. The pressure wasn’t gone. But for the first time since publishing, Haruki felt something stronger than anxiety.

Momentum.

And momentum was a difficult thing to stop.
