Entertainment Creator System: Building an Anime Empire

Chapter 15: Chapter 15: The Editor’s Email

Haruki’s first contact with the professional industry arrived on a Tuesday afternoon. It almost ended up in his spam folder — a fact that would’ve been funny if it hadn’t been terrifying.

He was halfway through sketching a confrontation between Ren and Agent Shiori when an email notification popped up in the corner of the screen. Normally he ignored most of them — advertisements, platform updates, random newsletters he’d forgotten to unsubscribe from. Nothing important. Today, one subject line caught his attention.

Regarding Threadless Gate

He frowned, hovered the cursor, and clicked. The sender’s address belonged to the platform — more specifically, an editor. He stared at the screen for several seconds before reading it, twice.

Hello. My name is Mizuno Rei. I am an associate editor working with emerging creators on the platform. I recently read Threadless Gate and wanted to introduce myself. Your concept has attracted attention within our discovery team. While your audience remains small, your retention metrics are unusually strong for a first-time creator. If you are interested, I would like to discuss your future plans for the series. No pressure. Simply reach out if interested.

Best regards, Mizuno Rei

Haruki leaned back, then read it again — not because he didn’t understand it, but because he did. The platform had noticed him. Not the readers, not another creator. An editor. A professional whose actual job involved finding promising projects. His heartbeat picked up. The email wasn’t a contract, wasn’t an offer, wasn’t even a guarantee. It still felt significant. Very significant.

A blue screen appeared.

He barely glanced at it — a rare event — because his attention stayed fixed on the email. Mizuno Rei. The name meant nothing to him, which made sense; he’d only been publishing for two weeks. The idea that an editor knew his title at all felt absurd.

His phone buzzed. Takeda.

”Hello.”

”YOU GOT AN EDITOR.”

He pulled the phone away from his ear. Some things never changed. ”How do you know already?”

”Yui told me.”

Naturally. The information network surrounding Yui kept getting more terrifying by the day. Takeda sounded like he might actually explode. ”You’re basically famous.”

”No.”

”Industry famous.”

”No.”

”Almost famous.”

”No.”

”A little famous?”

He considered it, then sighed. ”No.”

The call ran on for several more minutes, mostly Takeda inventing increasingly ridiculous versions of success, before it finally ended and left Haruki alone with the email again. This time he looked at it more practically. An editor wasn’t reaching out because he was successful — he wasn’t, not yet. An editor reached out because they saw potential, and potential and success were very different things.

His attention drifted to the comments section.

Readers: 346

Growth was steady — not explosive, not disappointing, just steady — and the comments had improved too. Discussion was picking up, readers debating theories, questions stacking up beneath every Chapter. One caught his eye:

I don’t trust Shiori. She seems too smart.

He laughed — exactly the reaction he’d been going for. Another reader replied almost immediately: No, she’s obviously becoming an ally. A third disagreed. A fourth joined in, and a small argument formed under the Chapter. He watched it play out for a while, then smiled. This was new — readers weren’t just consuming the story anymore. They were arguing over it. The story had started generating its own conversations, and a creator couldn’t really ask for more than that.

He looked back at Chapter Three, then the editor’s email, then back at the Chapter. Work won. It always should — the email mattered, but the Chapter mattered more.

He resumed drawing. Shiori kept investigating Ren, the Fate Observation Bureau tightened its surveillance, and a second mysterious black thread appeared elsewhere in Tokyo. The world expanded. The danger expanded. Most importantly, the questions expanded — readers needed reasons to come back, and questions were exactly that.

Hours passed. By evening, Chapter Three was only a few pages from complete — satisfying progress.

Another notification appeared, this one not from the platform but from Kuroda.

Congratulations on attracting editorial attention. Fast progress.

Haruki blinked, then laughed softly. The industry really was smaller than he’d expected — or maybe creators just paid closer attention to each other than outsiders assumed. Either way, the message encouraged him, not because Kuroda was praising him, but because the rivalry suddenly felt real. Not hostile, not dramatic. Real. Someone ahead on the mountain, acknowledging another climber.

Outside, evening light reflected off the windows of nearby buildings, rain clouds drifting slowly across the skyline. Inside a small apartment, an eighteen-year-old creator looked at an unfinished Chapter, a growing audience, an editor’s email, and a future that seemed to get bigger every week.

Two weeks ago he’d graduated without direction. Now editors knew his name. The audience was still small, the journey still long, the challenges still difficult. But the industry no longer felt distant.

For the first time, the door appeared slightly open.

And Haruki intended to walk through it.
