Chapter 26: Chapter 26: The Update Crisis

Haruki missed his deadline. Not by much. Three hours. Three miserable, humiliating hours.

Chapter Six was supposed to release at noon. At noon, it remained unfinished. At 12:01, readers started noticing. At 12:07, comments appeared. At 12:15, forum posts appeared. At 12:31, Haruki seriously considered moving to another country and changing his identity.

The problem wasn’t laziness. It wasn’t procrastination either. The problem was Chapter Six itself — every version felt wrong in a different way. The first lacked tension. The second rushed the conflict. The third solved its problems too easily. The fourth somehow managed both mistakes at once, which he hadn’t thought was possible until he’d achieved it by accident at ten in the morning.

By eleven, he’d rewritten nearly half the Chapter. By noon, panic arrived. By one, panic had brought friends.

His apartment looked like a disaster zone — reference notes covering the desk, empty coffee cans occupying dangerous amounts of territory, the tablet showing Page Twenty-Three finished and Page Twenty-Four sitting blank. A blank page. The natural predator of creators everywhere, and apparently it hadn’t gotten any less dangerous just because he’d beaten it twenty-three times already this Chapter.

His phone buzzed. He ignored it. It buzzed again. Ignored. A third time. Ignored. A fourth, and he finally answered.

”Hello.”

”Where is the Chapter?” Takeda, naturally.

Haruki rubbed his forehead. ”I’m working.”

”No, you’re missing a deadline.” The correction felt unnecessarily accurate. ”The readers are revolting.”

”They are not revolting.”

A pause. ”Okay, maybe revolting is dramatic.” Another pause. ”Concerned.” Better. Unfortunately.

”How bad?”

Takeda laughed — a dangerous sign, a very dangerous one. ”There’s already a forum thread.” Haruki closed his eyes. Of course there was; the internet never wasted an opportunity. ”What thread?”

Takeda read it straight off the screen: Did Threadless Gate Author Quit?

Haruki wanted to throw something. One missed update. One. And suddenly he’d retired. Wonderful. Absolutely wonderful.

The call ended shortly after, mostly because he needed to actually finish a Chapter and Takeda needed entertainment elsewhere.

At 1:43, the doorbell rang. He ignored it. At 1:45, it rang again. Still ignored. At 1:47, someone unlocked the door — which narrowed the suspects considerably.

Yui walked in carrying a convenience store bag, took one look at the apartment, then another, then sighed. A long sigh. A disappointed one. The most dangerous kind.

”You forgot lunch.”

He looked at the clock and blinked. Apparently he had.

She set the food on the desk, then noticed the unfinished Chapter, then the analytics, then the comments, then the forum thread. Her expression shifted into something understanding, which somehow felt worse than if she’d just been annoyed.

”You missed the update.”

”Three hours.”

”That’s still missing it.” Fair. Annoyingly fair.

She sat beside him — not across, beside, close enough to actually see the pages — and for several minutes said nothing, just read. Eventually she pointed at one panel. ”This scene is better.” He looked. Page Twenty-One, the version he’d drawn an hour earlier, compared to Page Eighteen from that morning. She was right. Again. A deeply unfortunate habit of hers.

”The Chapter improved.”

”Not fast enough.”

She considered that, then shrugged. ”So release it when it’s ready.”

He stared at her. ”What?”

She pointed at the comments. ”People are already upset.” True. ”Releasing a worse Chapter won’t fix that.” Also true, and the simplicity of it irritated him precisely because it made sense.

At 2:58, Chapter Six finally went live. Three hours late. Haruki stared at the publish confirmation — not relieved, just exhausted.

The system appeared.

[Update Completed]

Schedule Reliability: Temporarily Reduced Reader Trust Impact: Minor Recommendation: Communicate delays proactively.

He groaned. The system was right again — a recurring problem, that.

The comments arrived fast, faster than usual, like readers had been sitting there refreshing the page.

HE LIVES.

Author survived. Chapter acquired.

Worth the wait.

He froze on that last one and reread it. Worth the wait. A simple sentence carrying an enormous amount of relief, because readers expected disappointment after a delay, and instead they’d gotten a stronger Chapter than the one that would’ve gone up on time.

More comments followed.

Best Chapter since Four.

Ren finally feels desperate.

The ending was insane.

The Bureau director showing up changes everything.

He leaned back slowly and watched the engagement graph update — comments climbing, discussion climbing, shares climbing, the line pushing past Chapter Five and continuing upward.

A blue notification appeared.

[Special Mission Progress]

Engagement Recovery: 82% Required: 100% Status: Ongoing

He smiled. Close. Very close.

That evening, a message arrived from Mizuno — short, professional, direct, exactly as expected.

Missing one deadline isn’t dangerous. Missing several is. Good recovery. Don’t make it a habit.

— Mizuno

Twenty minutes later, one from Kuroda, even shorter.

Congratulations. You experienced your first update crisis. There will be more.

— Kuroda

Haruki laughed. Not comforting at all, which probably made it honest.

He sat back and looked around the apartment — still messy, still smelling faintly of cold coffee, notes still scattered everywhere he’d thrown them during the panic. Nothing about the scene had changed in the last few hours except the one thing that actually mattered: the Chapter existed now, and people liked it. The missed deadline hadn’t been erased. It just stopped being the only thing that had happened today.

Outside, Tokyo shimmered beneath the evening lights, trains still running, streets still full, the city entirely indifferent to whether one creator had made his noon deadline. Inside, the apartment stayed messy, the coffee stayed cold, and the deadlines stayed real. Nothing magical had happened. The mistake had still happened. But the Chapter had succeeded anyway, and the readers had stayed anyway, and the story had kept moving anyway.

For the first time, Haruki understood something experienced creators rarely talked about out loud. Publishing wasn’t about never failing. It was about continuing after failure without letting the failure become a habit — which sounded simple enough as a sentence and felt considerably harder as a lived afternoon.

The lesson cost him three hours of panic, one missed deadline, and an entire day of stress he wasn’t going to get back. Expensive. Probably worth it anyway.

Because Chapter Seven waited.

And deadlines, unfortunately, had excellent memories.
