Chapter 25: Chapter 25: The Price of Consistency

The worst part about Chapter Five wasn’t the criticism. It wasn’t the forum thread. It wasn’t even the disappointing engagement numbers. The worst part was waking up the next morning and realizing the next Chapter still had to be made.

Failure didn’t pause deadlines. The world kept moving, readers kept waiting, the platform kept updating, and Chapter Six remained unfinished regardless of how Chapter Five had landed.

Haruki sat at his desk at seven in the morning staring at a spreadsheet — not story notes, not manga pages. Money. Rent, utilities, internet, food, drawing software subscriptions, equipment maintenance. Everything cost something, a deeply inconvenient reality that had been easy to ignore while the reader count climbed. His savings had carried him through graduation. Now they were shrinking, steadily and relentlessly. The realization wasn’t dramatic. It was practical, and somehow that made it scarier than a dramatic one would have been.

A blue notification appeared.

[Financial Status Analysis]

Current Savings: Stable Projected Sustainability: 7.4 Months Risk Level: Low Future Risk Trend: Increasing Recommendation: Establish income source within 120 days.

Haruki stared at it, then reread the projection. Seven months sounded like a long time — until he remembered how quickly the last three weeks had passed, and the number suddenly felt much smaller.

His phone buzzed. Not Yui. Not Takeda. Not Kuroda.

Unknown Number

He hesitated, then answered. ”Hello?”

”Haruki Amamiya?” A woman’s voice, professional, familiar.

”Mizuno-san?”

”Good. I called the right person.” The relief in her voice sounded genuine, and that worried him — editors rarely sounded relieved. The conversation immediately felt dangerous.

”What happened?”

A pause. ”Nothing serious.” He relaxed slightly. ”But we should talk.” The relaxation disappeared. ”About?”

”Chapter Five.”

Of course. What else would it be.

Mizuno didn’t waste time. ”Do you know why readers reacted negatively?” He glanced at the notebook still sitting beside his monitor, the one titled Why Chapter Five Failed.

”I think so.”

”Good. Tell me.”

The next ten minutes felt remarkably like an exam. He walked through it — weak payoff, cautious pacing, fear of making mistakes, playing it safe after Chapter Four succeeded. When he finished, silence followed.

”That’s most of it,” she said.

Most. Not all. The distinction caught him immediately. ”What am I missing?”

She sighed — not frustrated, thoughtful. ”The Chapter feels created by someone protecting success.”

Haruki stopped moving. The sentence landed harder than he expected, because it sounded true. Very true.

”Readers don’t follow creators because they’re perfect,” she went on. A pause. ”They follow creators because they’re interesting.”

The line stayed with him. He looked at the unfinished Chapter Six outline, then the criticism, then the forum discussions. Interesting. Not safe. Not perfect. Interesting. The difference suddenly felt obvious — painfully obvious, in the way things usually are once someone else says them out loud.

The call ended twenty minutes later. Haruki sat quietly, thinking — not about criticism, not about rankings, not about retention. About fear. Chapter Four had succeeded. Chapter Five had tried to protect that success, and in doing so lost some of what made the story worth reading in the first place. A dangerous lesson, and probably one every creator eventually learned the hard way.

A notification appeared — a new forum thread. He opened it automatically, then immediately regretted it.

Can Threadless Gate Recover?

Wonderful. Absolutely wonderful. His public execution now came with community participation. He scrolled anyway, because curiosity remained stronger than self-preservation.

StoryHunter: The series isn’t declining. The author is learning. Those are different things.

He stared at that, then kept reading. The same user had posted again further down: Every creator eventually publishes a weak Chapter. The next Chapter determines whether it becomes a pattern or a lesson.

The words stayed with him — not the exact phrasing, but the mindset. Very similar to Kuroda. Very similar to Mizuno. Very similar to what every experienced creator seemed to keep saying in slightly different words. Failure wasn’t the problem. What happened afterward was.

The afternoon moved quickly. Haruki opened Chapter Six, then deleted half the outline — not because it was bad, but because it was cautious. The second anomaly had already been captured by the Bureau. Readers expected consequences, conflict, escalation. Instead, the original draft spent twelve pages gathering information before anything happened. Gone. Deleted.

Ren would make a reckless decision instead. A dangerous one. An emotional one, the kind capable of creating brand-new problems instead of neatly resolving old ones. The Chapter felt more alive the moment he committed to it — not confidence exactly, but momentum, and the difference between those two things was becoming clearer to him with every Chapter he wrote.

As evening approached, another notification appeared — not from readers, not from Mizuno. The system.

A rare mission window unfolded.

[Special Mission Issued: The Cost of Growth]

Objective: Recover audience confidence following Chapter Five. Success Condition: Chapter Six engagement exceeds Chapter Four engagement. Reward: Industry Insight Package Failure Condition: Engagement stagnates. Reward: None Difficulty: High

Haruki stared at it, then laughed softly. The system really did have terrible timing — a high-difficulty mission arriving immediately after public criticism. Perfect. Exactly what he needed, and exactly what he didn’t want.

He sat with the outline a while longer, thinking about how strange it was that the story’s stakes and his own had started to mirror each other so closely. Ren had lost something and now had to decide whether to play it safe or take a real risk to get it back. Haruki was doing more or less the same thing, just with a spreadsheet instead of a mysterious gate. The parallel would’ve amused him if it weren’t so directly tied to his rent.

Outside, Tokyo glowed beneath a sea of lights. Trains crossed elevated tracks, office buildings reflected the evening sky, and thousands of people out there were worrying about jobs, money, relationships, futures — the ordinary weight everyone carried without anyone else noticing. Inside a small apartment, an eighteen-year-old creator worried about all of that and Chapter engagement at the same time.

The industry still felt distant. Success still felt uncertain. The savings account still had an expiration date sitting quietly in the background of everything else. For the first time, the dream had a visible cost attached to it — not dramatic sacrifice, not heroic suffering. Simple arithmetic. Time. Money. Risk. The things every creator eventually had to face sooner or later, whether or not anyone warned them in advance.

Haruki looked at the Chapter Six outline, then picked up the stylus.

Because the future wouldn’t be decided by Chapter Five.

It would be decided by what came next — and Chapter Six had just become the most important Chapter he’d written so far.
